Game 68 - Sox Easily Handle Nola, Phils

Game 68 - Thursday Night, June 13th in Boston
Record - 46-22, 1st Place, 9 games ahead of the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  Aaron Nola was hit early and often as the Phillies endured a rare lopsided loss, falling 9-3 to the Red Sox.

What It Means:  Flush it.  This was the team's worst loss since falling to the Reds, 8-1 on April 23rd.  Nola's eight earned runs allowed tied a career high, previously set on August 30, 2022.

What Happened:  Nola allowed four runs in the second and another four runs in the fourth.  The lone Phillies highlight came in the top of the fourth when Kyle Schwarber laced a bases-clearing double to center field, pulling the Phillies to within a run at 4-3.  Nola couldn't turn in a shut-down inning though, and the Red Sox quickly had an 8-3 lead after they batted in the bottom of the fourth.

Featured Card:  Current Red Sox pitching coach Andrew Bailey spent part of the 2016 season with the Phillies, going 3-1 with a 6.40 ERA in 33 relief appearances.  He was released by the club on August 6th.  Less than a month earlier, on July 16, 2016, Bailey posed with our two sons who will both be High School students when school starts again in September.  Hard to believe, Harry.

Game 43 - Phils Swept Out of California Again

Game 43 - Wednesday Afternoon, May 17th in San Francisco
Record - 20-23, 4th Place, 7 games behind the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  Phillies starting pitcher Taijuan Walker couldn't escape the first inning and reliever Gregory Soto couldn't escape the eighth in this 7-3 loss to the Giants.

What It Means:  The Giants swept the Phillies out of town.  They're 0-6 so far this season in California, including the sweep at the beginning of May by the Dodgers.  A six-game homestead starts on Friday night against the Cubs and Diamondbacks.

What Happened:  Walker looked lost, departing after allowing four runs on four hits and a pair of walks, while recording only two outs.  The bullpen held its own after that, highlighted by 2 1/3 scoreless innings from Matt Strahm, but the Giants plated three runs in the eighth against Soto.  The Phillies offense was sparse.  J.T. Realmuto had a two-run double in the fourth, followed by an Alec Bohm sacrifice fly.

Featured Card:   Here's a fairly rare 2016 Chachi Archives card of current Giants' pitching coach Andrew Bailey.  The Phillies wore throwback uniforms and pillbox hats in a game against the Brewers in early June 2016, celebrating 1970s Retro Night, and I commemorated the occasion with a set of Chachi Archives cards.  Bailey, a veteran of eight big league seasons and the Giants' pitching coach since 2020, spent the 2016 season with the Phillies.  He was 3-1 that year with a 6.40 ERA in 33 relief appearances.

2016 Phillies Team Issue 2 #38 Andrew Bailey

Game 102 - Tuesday Night, July 26th in Miami
Record - 46-56, 4th place, 13 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  Jared Eickhoff was strong in his start, but no offense and a lack of relief from Andrew Bailey and Severino Gonzalez doomed the Phillies.

What It Means:  It's not going well.

What Happened:  Eickhoff allowed one run and struck out eight in his seven innings of work. Bailey and Gonzalez combined to allow four runs in the bottom of the eighth, ruining Eickhoff's solid outing.  The offense contributed four singles.

Featured Card:  Bailey's ERA is now up to 5.74 and I would think the Phillies are getting anxious to see some of the younger arms come up from Lehigh Valley.  As such, his days with the club could be numbered.  Bailey has appeared in both team issued photo card sets this year.

Game 94 - Monday Night, July 18th in Philadelphia
Record - 43-51, 4th place, 13 1/2 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  Aaron Nola's six scoreless innings were wasted when Jeanmar Gomez couldn't convert the save and the Marlins eventually won the game in 11.

What It Means:  The extra inning loss was especially tough to take, given that the Phillies were able to score twice off Marlins starting pitcher Jose Fernandez.  Fernandez struck out 14 and notched his 500th career strike out in this game.

What Happened:  The Phils got their runs on a Maikel Franco ground out in the first and a Tommy Joseph solo home run (12) in the seventh.  Nola lasted six innings, giving up only two hits and striking out five.  Gomez blew his third save of the season and Brett Oberholtzer surrendered a lead-off home run to Martin Prado in the 11th.

Featured Cards:  This is the last round of Phillies Photo Day custom cards in the very limited 2016 Chachi Photo Day insert set.  Again, I was pleasantly surprised at how accommodating and gracious most of the Phillies players, coaches and broadcasters were as they took the time to pose for photos with our sons.  The only player not walking around pre-game was Jared Eickhoff, who was that day's starting pitcher.  Every other player, coach and broadcaster (including veterans Carlos Ruiz and Ryan Howard) spent more than a half hour on the field posing for photos with the fans.

Kudos to the Phillies for a very enjoyable, fan-friendly experience!

Far Out! 2016 Chachi Archives Cards Have Arrived! Phils Win!

Game 55 - Friday Night, June 3rd in Philadelphia
Record - 27-28, 4th place, 6 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  Andres Blanco's three-run home run and strong relief pitching led to a 6-3 win over the Brewers, snapping the team's seven-game losing streak.

What It Means:  The Phillies won and they looked super groovy doing it!

What Happened:  Blanco's home run gave the Phillies a 6-0 lead in the fourth inning, and their first genuinely comfortable lead of the season.  Cameron Rupp also homered and Tommy Joseph had a two-hit night.

Once again, Vince Velasquez couldn't escape the fifth inning, allowing two runs on four his while laboring through 94 pitches.  Andrew Bailey, Hector Neris and Jeanmar Gomez (18th save) all contributed scoreless innings in relief.

Featured Cards:  It was 1970s Retro Night at the ballpark and both the Brewers and Phillies wore uniforms from 1976.  It was an odd and interesting sight to see, as these two teams played in opposing leagues in 1976 and wouldn't have ever played each other.  As an added bonus, the Phillies went with the pillbox caps they wore occasionally during the Bicentennial season.  I absolutely love these old uniforms, and I was inspired to create a small insert set of 2016 Chachi Archives cards to highlight some of my favorite photos from the game.

Spring Training Game 26 - Sunday Afternoon, March 27th in Fort Myers
Record - 14-9-3

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies dropped their Easter matinee 5-1, as pitcher Jared Eickhoff was knocked around by the Red Sox.

What It Means:  Eickhoff was making just his second spring start and he surrendered 11 hits and five runs in his five innings of work.

What Happened:  Maikel Franco should have had his ninth home run of the spring, but his hit bounced off a fan back into the outfield and was ruled a double.  After a slow start to his spring, Odubel Herrera had three hits in this game to raise his spring average to .424.

Featured Card:  Reliever Andrew Bailey faced his former team, pitching a perfect eighth inning for the Phillies.  Although no official announcement has been made, it appears as if Bailey, a non-roster invitee, has the inside track to be named the club's closer for the start of the season.

Shoulder injuries have hampered Bailey the past few years, and he's been limited to just 59 games with the Red Sox and Yankees since the start of the 2012 season.  An All-Star with the A's in 2009 and 2010, Bailey is one of many intriguing story lines for the Phils as they approach the start of the 2016 season.
