Game 22 - 2012 Topps Heritage #274 Justin De Fratus

Game 22 - Monday Night, April 22nd in New York
Record - 12-10, Tied for 1st place, 1/2 game ahead of the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  After a 95-minute rain delay, the Phillies came out "flat" against the Mets and dropped this ballgame, 5-1.

What It Means:  Jake Arrieta called out his team after the game, noting that they didn't seem ready to play and the defense "wasn't good."  He had particularly harsh words for Bryce Harper, who was ejected from the dugout in the top of the fourth after arguing balls and strikes with the home plate umpire.  "I need my guys behind me and they weren't," Arrieta told reporters after the game.

What Happened:  The Phillies had just as many hits as errors (three) with Rhys Hoskins providing the only offense with a solo home run (6) right before Harper's ejection.  Arrieta lasted six innings, giving up four runs (three earned) while striking out seven.

Featured Card:  Unbelievably, the last Phillie ejected before Harper was Justin De Fratus on June 16, 2015.  This was during the infamous "white towel" game and a few weeks later manager Ryne Sandberg would resign.

Transactions:  The bullpen shuttle between the Phillies and Lehigh Valley has been getting extra mileage the last few weeks.  In need of a fresh arm, Austin Davis was sent down and Edubray Ramos came back up.

Bourjos Added to the Outfield Mix

The Phillies claimed outfielder Peter Bourjos off waivers from the St. Louis Cardinals yesterday, adding a key fourth outfielder to the mix for their 2016 roster.  Bourjos has only played center field during his big league career, so it will be interesting to see how they work him into the mix with Odubel Herrera slated to start in center.  A mix of Cody Asche, Aaron Altherr and Darnell Sweeney are expected to man the corner outfield positions.

Bourjos spent the first four years of his career with the Angels and the last two seasons with the Cardinals.  A career .241 hitter, Bourjos is known more for his glove than for his bat and the Phillies actually referenced his above average outfield range in their press release announcing the move.  His addition likely means Jeff Francoeur will be playing elsewhere in 2016.

Bourjos has been appearing in baseball card releases since 2007.  In 2015, he appeared in the Topps flagship set, Topps Opening Day, and the Gypsy Queen Glove Stories insert set.

When the Phillies announced the Bourjos move, they also announced that pitcher Nefi Ogando had been claimed off waivers by the Miami Marlins.  Ogando appeared in 4 games with the Phillies last season and he'll join the Missing Links ranks as yet another recent Phillies player with no official Phillies baseball cards.

Finally, reliever Justin De Fratus has latched on with the Mariners, signing a one-year deal worth $750,000.

While the rest of the baseball world was preparing for the Cubs-Pirates Wild Card game, the Phillies were busy making their first roster moves of the off-season.

Catcher Erik Kratz, infielder Chase d'Arnaud, outfielder Jordan Danks and relievers Justin De Fratus, Adam Loewen and Ken Roberts were all outrighted off the 40-man roster.  Jonathan Pettibone, who was on the 60-day disabled list all season, was activated and also outrighted.  The moves leave the Phillies with 34 players on their 40-man roster and six players still on the 60-day DL.

Given their years of service, d'Arnaud, De Fratus, Loewen and Kratz can all immediately elect to become free agents or they can wait until after the World Series when they'll automatically become minor league free agents.  Danks and Pettibone can become free agents following the World Series and Roberts will be reassigned to a Phillies minor league team.

Of the seven players outrighted, De Fratus had been in the Phillies system the longest, having made his debut with the club in 2011.  He leaves behind a Phillies baseball card legacy that began with the 2011 Bowman set and ended with the 2015 team issued photo card sets.

d'Arnaud, Danks and Loewen could join the ranks of those unfortunate (or fortunate depending on your point of view) Phillies players who never appeared on a Phillies baseball card.  Roberts appears to still have a chance if he's in the mix next season.

Also of note is the dismissal of two Phillies coaches following the final game of the season.  Third base coach John Mizerock and bullpen coach Rod Nichols were let go and the other four coaches - bench coach Larry Bowa, first base coach Juan Samuel, hitting coach Steve Henderson and pitching coach Bob McClure were all invited back for 2016.  There's been no official word yet if those four will actually decide to return for 2016 and Bowa recently interviewed for the manager's job in Miami.

2015 Phillies Team Issue #30 Justin De Fratus

Game 26 - Sunday Afternoon, May 3rd in Miami
Record - 9-17, 5th Place, 7 games behind the Mets

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies came to life in a 6-2 win over the Marlins as Ryan Howard and Ben Revere paced the offense.

What It Means:  The five game losing streak is over, the sweep was averted and the Phillies will head to Atlanta next to open a three-game series with the Braves.

What Happened:  Severino Gonzalez notched his first Major League win, striking out five in his five innings of work while allowing only two runs.  Howard tied up the game 2-2 in the sixth with an RBI triple off Marlins pitcher Jarred Cosart.  Grady Sizemore singled home Howard with the eventual winning run.  Revere added three hits and knocked in the first run for the Phils in the fifth.

In less pleasant news . . . Chase Utley went 0 for 5 and is now hitting .108.

Featured Card:  I don't often get to post cards of middle relievers, so I thought I'd go with a Justin De Fratus card today.  De Fratus has struggled a little this season, but he was able to look absolutely unhittable in this game.  Protecting a 3-2 lead, De Fratus entered in the bottom of the sixth and struck out the 3-4-5 hitters - Giancarlo Stanton, Marcell Ozuna and Michael Morse - all swinging, on 10 pitches.

Transaction:  Following the game, Gonzalez was optioned back to Triple-A Lehigh Valley as the Phillies won't need a fifth starter until May 12th.

2014 Phillies Team Issue #30 Justin De Fratus

Game 54 - Sunday Afternoon, June 1st in Philadelphia
Record - 24-30, 5th Place, 6 games behind the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies and Mets played their third straight extra-inning game, and the Mets won after the newly recalled Phillippe Aumont allowed a two-run home run to Lucas Duda in the 11th.

What It Means:  The Phillies are a season worst six games under .500 and they have a secure hold on last place in the N.L. East.

What Happened:  Ryan Howard (two-run home run in the fourth) and Marlon Byrd (solo home run in the 11th) provided the offense, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Mets.  The Phillies best chance to add some runs came in the seventh when Cesar Hernandez led off with a bunt single and was advanced to second on a Reid Brignac sacrifice bunt.  Domonic Brown singled next, but was thrown out between first and second in a bone-headed baserunning move.

Cole Hamels once again pitched nicely, allowing just two runs (one earned) in his seven innings of work.  Aumont recorded two quick outs in the 11th, but walked Travis d'Arnaud (hitting .193) setting up Duda's two-run blast.

Spring Training Game 13 - Monday Afternoon, March 10th in Clearwater
Record - 2-9-2

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies fell flat again in spring training action against the Braves, losing 8-1.

What Happened:  It's just not going well for the Phils, and if their play in the first 13 games of the exhibition season is any indication, we're in for a very long season.  Cliff Lee pitched into the fourth inning, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out five.

A Maikel Franco error in the seventh led to five unearned Braves runs scored off Jonathan Papelbon.

Featured Card:  With the team suffering as a whole, I'm trying to look for little reasons to be optimistic as April quickly approaches.  Justin De Fratus has quietly put together a solid spring, allowing a run over four innings while striking out five.  He's a lock to make the team's bullpen and he turned in a nice diving play in yesterday's game which you can view here.

De Fratus will hopefully get a new standard-sized Phillies card in 2014, as he hasn't appeared on a Topps or Panini baseball card since 2012.  This is his solo card from the 2012 Topps Heritage set, not to be confused with his multi-player Rookie Stars card.

Game 66 - Wednesday Night, June 12th in Minneapolis
Record - 31-35, 3rd Place, 8 games behind the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  Justin De Fratus allowed the eventual winning run to score on an eighth inning wild pitch as the Phils lost again to the Twins, 4-3.

What It Means:  The Phillies have lost five in a row, and they'll try to avoid the sweep tonight with Cliff Lee on the mound.

What Went Wrong:  The De Fratus wild pitch would have been harmless if not for the back-to-back doubles allowed by Antonio Bastardo to start the inning.  Starter Tyler Cloyd lasted only five innings (one run on six hits) leaving the game in the hands of the very shaky bullpen.

The offense managed six singles (three from Ben Revere) and a double (Michael Young).

Featured Card:  De Fratus has actually been one of the more reliable Phillie relievers this year.  It's easy to blame this loss on his wild pitch, but there were so many more Phillies problems on display during this ballgame.  (No offense, shaky pitching, lack of energy, etc.)

De Fratus' lone Phillies card so far this year can be found in the Phillies team issued set, and he also appears in the Lehigh Valley IronPigs team set.  He made his "rookie" card debut last year with cards in the Topps flagship (shown here) and Topps Heritage offerings.  Proving that Topps knows how to pick a good De Fratus photo, I used the same exact Getty image for De Fratus' 2011 Chachi card.

The Spring Training 57 (+1): Where They Went

It's Opening Day Eve, one of the most magical nights of the year.  The Phillies have set their 25-man roster and they're preparing to play the Pirates tomorrow afternoon in Pittsburgh.  One of the bigger surprises when the final roster was announced late last night was the inclusion of lefty reliever Joe Savery.  The only 2011 baseball card I have of Savery, lists his position as "1B/LHP," which is not an error.  As summarized today in David Hale's Philled In blog post:

"The story of Joe Savery is nothing short of amazing. A year ago, he was trying to make it as a first baseman/DH in Class A ball, having given up on pitching after two straight disastrous minor-league seasons.

Suddenly, Savery’s arm began feeling better, he got back on the mound and was throwing better, and by year’s end he was in the big leagues. 

Odds are that when Jose Contreras comes off the DL (he’s eligible April 10), Savery could be the guy shipped out, but at this point the 26-year-old lefty has established himself as a big-league pitcher, and that’s borderline astonishing."

Astonishing is right. Savery is featured on a few multi-player Rookie Stars in this year's Topps Heritage set, including the card I've posted here.  He shares this card with teammate and disabled list-bound Justin De Fratus.

The other slight surprise was that Pete Orr beat out Hector Luna for the final infielder spot on the roster.  Although Luna had a nice spring with his bat, leading the team with three home runs, Orr just offers more in terms of defense and speed on the basepaths.

So the Phils are down to their 25-man roster, but what happened to the other 32 guys who broke camp with the team back on February 18th?  I'm glad you asked:
