2024 Chachi #31 Nick Nelson

#57 / Nicholas Benjamin Nelson / Relief Pitcher
Bats:  Right  Throws:  Right  Height:  6'1"  Weight:  205
Opening Day Age:  27
Born:  December 5, 1995, Panama City, FL
Acquired:  Traded by the New York Yankees with Donny Sands to the Phillies for T.J. Rumfield and Joel Valdez, November 19, 2021
Major League Teams:  New York Yankees 2020-21; Philadelphia Phillies 2022-24
Postseason Appearances:  New York Yankees 2020; Philadelphia Phillies 2022

Similar to Connor Brogdon, Nick Nelson was a key part of the 2022 Phillies bullpen, but then all but completely dropped out of the team's plans in 2023 and 2024.  Nelson was recalled to start the final game of the 2023 season and pitched 5 1/3 innings for a win.  In 2024, he appeared in three games in April and a single game in September, pitching a total of 5 1/3 innings while spending 16 games on the club's active roster.  He went from 47 appearances and 68 2/3 innings pitched in 2022 to just five more games with the Phillies over the next two seasons.  For his Phillies career, Nelson was 4-2 with a 4.65 ERA in 52 appearances, including a pair of starts.  He's reportedly signed with the Hanshin Tigers in Japan.

Born:  December 5, 1995, Panama City, FL
Acquired:  Traded by the New York Yankees with Donny Sands to the Phillies for T.J. Rumfield and Joel Valdez, November 19, 2021
Contract Status:  Arbitration eligible 2024
Major League Teams:  New York Yankees 2020-2021; Philadelphia Phillies 2022-2023
World Series Appearances:  Philadelphia Phillies 2022

Remember Nick Nelson?  He was a surprisingly effective reliever for the Phillies in 2022, appearing in 47 games overall and owning a 4.85 ERA in 68 2/3 innings pitched.  Nelson was one of four players, along with Kyle Schwarber, Rhys Hoskins and Garrett Stubbs, to be on the active roster for all 162 games during the 2022 regular season.  He was omitted from the postseason rosters during the Wild Card Series and the NLCS, but added during the NLDS and the World Series.  He pitched a scoreless eighth inning against the Astros in World Series Game 3, in which the Phillies won, 7-0.

Nelson spent all of 2023, save the final day of the regular season, in the minor leagues mostly with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.  He also made a few rehab appearances with Clearwater and Reading.  In 25 minor league starts, Nelson was 7-3 with a 3.83 ERA.  He was activated for Game 162 against the Mets, pitching extremely well for 5 1/3 innings and earning the win.

Game 83 - Phils Notch Win Behind Hall, Bullpen

2022 Phillies Photo Cards #57
Phillies 5
, Nationals 3
Game 83 - Thursday Afternoon, July 7th in Philadelphia
Record - 44-39, 3rd Place, 8 games behind the Mets

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies edged the Nationals, 5-3, led by Darick Hall and a suddenly solid bullpen.

What It Means:  The Phillies Room staff is back from a 12-day sojourn to Europe, and we'll be slowly adding game summary posts for the games we missed while we were away.  In the 11 games we missed, the Phillies went 6-5, but lost the heart of their line-up on June 25th when Bryce Harper broke his thumb.  The team is currently a percentage point ahead of the Cardinals for the third National League Wild Card spot, and they'll open a crucial four-game series in St. Louis tonight.

What Happened:  Bailey Falter started the game and allowed a pair of runs in his four innings of work before yielding to the bullpen.  Nick Nelson picked up the win with two innings of scoreless relief.  Seranthony Dominguez pitched a perfect ninth inning for his third save.  Darick Hall stayed hot with an RBI-double and a home run, his fourth, in the seventh inning.  Didi Gregorius was credited with an RBI-triple in the third when Nationals' right fielder Juan Soto dropped a fly ball.

Featured Card:  Let's come back from vacation in style with the first (and only?) Phillies card for reliever Nelson.  My son Doug says Nelson reminds him of a computer-generated player from his baseball video games.

Phils Acquire Reliever Nelson, Catcher Sands from Yankees for Prospects

2022 Chachi New Additions #3
2022 Chachi New Additions #4

After adding four players to their 40-man roster earlier in the day, the Phillies completed their first trade of the 2021-2022 offseason, adding catching and bullpen depth.

The Phillies acquired Nick Nelson (rhp) and Donny Sands (c) from the New York Yankees for minor leaguers Joel Valdez (lhp) and T.J. Rumfield (1b).  Nelson and Sands are now on the Phillies' 40-man roster, bringing the current tally up to 38.  Valdez pitched for the DSL Phillies this past summer and had a 1.63 ERA over 15 starts and 55 1/3 innings pitched.  Rumfield was the team's 12th round pick in 2021 and he hit .250 in 27 games for Low-A Clearwater.  I don't have baseball cards for either Valdez or Rumfield.

Nelson has appeared in 22 games for the Yankees over the past two seasons, going 1-2 with a 6.43 ERA over 35 innings pitched.  He's struck out 40 and has 27 walks.  He's on a Rookie Stars card in the 2021 Topps Heritage set, and he earned his first mainstream solo card in the recently released 2021 Topps Update set.  Sands is intriguing as he gives the Phillies some much-needed catching depth.  In 94 minor league games last season, he batted .261 with 18 home runs and 56 RBIs.  Behind J.T. Realmuto, the Phillies will now have Rafael Marchan, Sands and Logan O'Hoppe as potential back-ups for 2022.  Sands first appeared in a mainstream baseball card set back in 2016 with the Bowman Chrome release.
