One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies got a much-needed win when Derek Hill singled home J.T. Realmuto with the game's winning run in the 12th inning.

What It Means:  They avoided a Blue Jays sweep and next headed out on the road (and the corn fields) with stops in St. Louis, Dyersville and Minneapolis.

What Happened:  Jesus Luzardo was fantastic, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out 12 over seven innings.  The Phillies led 5-2 upon Luzardo's exit, powered by a three-run home run from Kyle Schwarber in the third, a solo homer from Schwarber in the fifth and an RBI-single from Alec Bohm in the sixth.  Orion Kerkering blew it in the eighth, giving up three runs on four hits and allowing the Blue Jays to tie the game.  The Blue Jays took a brief lead in the top of the 12th, scoring off Caleb Kilian, but clutch RBI singles from Bryson Stott and Hill in the bottom of the 12th led to the win.

Featured Card:  In advance of the Field of Dreams game on Thursday, the Phillies did something really cool prior to this game by having four of their own "ghost players" throw out ceremonial first pitches.  Tim Granville (2006), Tim Lahey (2008), Jeff Singer (2022) and Will Toffey (2022) were all on the Phillies active roster briefly, but never appeared in a game with the club.  Of course, they all have their own Chachi cards, shown here.

Field Report:  Jenna and I attended the Twins-Brewers game at American Family Field in Milwaukee.  It was a gorgeous ballpark, and while a thunderstorm raged outside, we sat comfortably dry inside with the retractable roof closed.  The Brewers walked it off in the 10th on a Jake Bauers single.  Highlights from the game included Jacob Misiorowski's 200th strikeout of the season and a few leaping catches in right field by Luis Lara.

Transaction:  Alan Rangel (rhp) was recalled from Lehigh Valley and Chase Shugart (rhp) was optioned back down.

Three years after the "Sausage race incident," Randall Simon found himself with the Phillies, contending for the N.L. Wild Card and serving in a pure pinch-hitting role.  The experiment didn't really work as Simon went just 5 for 21 (.238) with no extra base hits and only two RBIs.  In 2007, the Phillies invited him to spring training as a non-roster invitee, but he didn't make the team and his Major League baseball career ended.

Simon's best season came in 2002 with the Tigers when he hit .301 with 19 home runs and 82 RBIs.  His production dropped every year afterwards as he bounced from the Pirates to the Cubs, back to the Pirates, briefly with the Devil Rays and Rangers and then finishing with the Phillies.  Only 31 in 2006, Simon played in parts of four more seasons (through 2010) in Mexico and with various independent teams.

Phillies Missing Links of the 2000s - #19 Jose Hernandez

An All-Star with the Brewers in 2002, Jose Hernandez ended his 15-year Major League playing career with 18 games for the contending 2006 Phillies.  Hernandez was one of a trio of veterans acquired in August along with Jamie Moyer and Jeff Conine to help the Phillies attempt a run on the N.L. Wild Card.  The team had purged the clubhouse of veteran leadership (and hefty salaries) in July with the departures of Bobby Abreu, Cory Lidle, David Bell, Sal Fasano, Rheal Cormier and Ryan Franklin.  With the youngsters now leading the way, suddenly the Phillies were in contention again.

12 of his 18 games with the Phillies saw him used as either a pinch-hitter or a pinch-runner, although he did receive four starts at third base and a start in right field.  His biggest hit with the club was a grand slam on September 18th off the Cubs' Sean Marshall in a game the Phillies would eventually lose 11-6.  Hernandez departed following the season, signing with the Pirates.  He'd spend the entire 2007 season playing for Triple-A Indianapolis before playing two final professional seasons in Mexico in 2008 and 2009.

2016 Chachi #71 Leading Firemen - Gomez, Neris, Mariot

Perhaps the hardest thing to watch during the latter part of the Phillies season was the complete implosion of Jeanmar Gomez as the team's closer.  Unofficially removed from the closer's roll during the final weeks of September, Gomez tallied a 19.13 ERA (17 earned runs in 8 innings) over his final 12 games.  The emergence (and dominance) of Hector Neris as an extremely effective late inning reliever means that he's probably one of the few pitchers guaranteed a spot in the team's 2017 bullpen.

Vince Velasquez and Aaron Nola led the Phillies pitching staff in strikeouts for most of the season, but Jared Eickhoff and Jeremy Hellickson were able to pull ahead late in the season due to Nola's injury and the shut down of Velasquez.
