2013 Chachi Transactions #3 Ender Inciarte

The annual Rule 5 draft has always intrigued me.  Each team has the right to protect up to 40 players who meet certain eligibility requirements having to do with age and service time.  Qualifying players not protected can be purchased by other teams, in descending order of their prior year record.  Here's the catch - the selected player has to remain on the selecting team's active roster for the entire year or the selecting team has to offer the player back to his original team.

In the case of Shane Victorino, whom the Phillies selected in 2004, they decided they didn't have room for him on their 25-man roster coming out of Spring Training in 2005.  The Phils offered him back to the Dodgers and the Dodgers politely declined, making him Phillies property.  The rest, as they say, is history.

With the selection last week of outfielder Ender Inciarte from the Diamondbacks, I thought it would be interesting to look back at the Phillies recent history in the Rule 5 draft.  There's a good chance Inciarte, a speedy, above average defensive outfielder, could find himself on Charlie Manuel's 25-roster when the team leaves Clearwater in April.

2012 Choice Lehigh Valley IronPigs Update #4 Tyson Brummett

The 2012-2013 Moving On list gained its second member last Thursday, when the Blue Jays claimed reliever Tyson Brummett off waivers from the Phillies.  Brummett pitched 2/3 of an inning for the Phils in their last game of the season, giving up two hits and striking out two.  Drafted in 2007, Brummett spent six seasons toiling in the Phillies minor league system.

His only Phillies cards appear in the 2009 Bowman Prospects insert sets - both the regular and Chrome varieties.

A few days ago, a third player was added when reliever David Herndon was also claimed off waivers by the Blue Jays.  Ironically, to make room for Herndon on their 40-man roster, the Jays designated Brummett for assignment.

2010 Bowman #194

Herndon missed most of the 2012 season following Tommy John surgery, and he's expected to miss at least half of the 2013 season.  The righty reliever appeared in 97 games between 2010 and 2012 with the Phillies, and he was one of the team's most reliable relievers last season, going 1-4 with a 3.32 ERA.

Herndon made appearances in the Phillies Team Issue sets over the past three seasons and his only two standard size Phillies baseball cards appeared in the 2010 Bowman and Topps sets.

2010 Chachi #64 Phillies NLDS Clincher HL

I knew all the so-called experts were picking the Phillies to roll over the Reds in the NLDS, and that worried me a little.  I was concerned about the best offense in the National League being able to find pitches to hit against the Phillies' Big 3.  Little did I know at the time that the Phillies' pitching would limit the Reds to just 11 hits and 4 runs during the 3-game sweep.  The mighty Reds hit a combined .124 in the series, which is a huge testament to the strength of the Phillies' staff.  Here's how it breaks down, as the Phillies swept a Postseason series for the first time in their history:

Reds vs. Roy Halladay & Cole Hamels - 5 for 58 (.087 average) with no runs scored and 17 strikeouts
Reds vs. Roy Oswalt - 5 for 21 (.238 average) with three earned runs and five strikeouts
Reds vs. Phillies bullpen - 1 for 10 (.100 average) with no runs scored and two strikeouts

I've decided not to worry about the lack of Phillies' offense (he types

tentatively).  As a team, the Phils hit .212 over the three games with just one home run and three doubles.  The lack of offense was almost a forgotten story given the pitching dominance of Halladay and Hamels, coupled with the Reds' defensive meltdown in Game 2.  However, in order for the Phillies to succeed against the Braves or Giants and advance to the World Series, the bats need to come to life.

Just Imagine:  How about a Phillies-Rangers World Series Game 1 match-up of Halladay against Cliff Lee? I know I'm getting ahead of myself here, but wouldn't that be cool?

This Week:  The Phillies Room will be resting for the NLCS.  We'll have daily work-outs and there will be the mandatory Q&A sessions with the ever-present media.  We may even have a few intra-squad games just to keep everyone fresh.  When the mood strikes, time permitting, I still want to post the remaining 2010 Chachi cards that haven't been publicly displayed yet.  (I know everyone's waiting for the Brian Bocock card.)

2010 Topps #424 David Herndon

Today's Quiz:  Can you name the 7 players who survived through the entire 2010 season on the Phillies' active roster?  (Answer is below.)  That's crazy, when you think about it.  The Phillies have had only 7 players suit up every day since Opening Day.  They've used 42 different players this year.  According to Baseball Reference, through Tuesday night's game, Charlie Manuel has run out 90 different line-ups, excluding the pitcher's spot.  The "everyday" line-up when the season started has taken the field together only 9 times.  They've made 42 roster changes this year, and the longest the team went without making a roster change was a 14-game stretch in early June.

And yet, somehow, the team is now 3 games ahead of the Braves in the NL East.  Amazing.



2010 Topps #154



Former Phillies Triviality:  There are four Ex-Phillies featured as Phillies on regular-issued 2010 baseball cards.  Each of them left the Phillies in the offseason for different teams, and they've each since moved on to yet another organization - Cliff Lee (Mariners to Rangers), Pedro Feliz (Astros to Cardinals), Eric Bruntlett (Nationals' organization to the Yankees' organization) and Jack Taschner (Pirates to the Dodgers).

2011 Chachi Set:  The 2011 Chachi Set Planning Committee will be meeting shortly to discuss the classic Topps' design to be used for the 2011 Chachi set.  Without giving too much away, the Committee has held internal discussions and the early indications are that either the '83 or '71 Topps sets will be used as the inspiration for next year's set.  Surprisingly, the '88 Topps set has entered the fray and the '65 Topps set has emerged as a dark horse candidate.  The '65 Topps set intrigues me, and I only have a few more years until Topps runs this design out again as 2014 Topps Heritage.

Trivia Answer:  Only outfielders Raul Ibañez, Jayson Werth, Ben Francisco, starters Roy Halladay and Cole Hamels and relievers Jose Contreras and David Herndon have been on the Phillies' active 25-man roster for the entire 2010 season.

2010 Chachi #20 David Herndon

As a Rule 5 selection from the Los Angeles Angels, David Herndon must remain on the Phillies' roster for the entire 2010 season, or the team has to offer him back to the Angels. He's roughly to the half-way point of completing this requirement, and he's been used so far this season in low-pressure relief situations.

Herndon's rookie cards have popped up in this year's Topps and Bowman offerings. He's also card #20 in the 2010 Chachi set.
