Nationals 9, Phillies 8
Game 5 - Wednesday Afternoon, April 3rd in Washington
Record - 4-1, 2nd place, 1/2 game behind the Mets
One Sentence Summary: A costly error from Rhys Hoskins and 9th inning wildness from David Robertson led to a deflating 9-8 loss to the Nationals.
What It Means: The Phillies won't be in first place wire to wire as this loss coupled with the Mets win knocked them out of first place.
What Happened: Aaron Nola had a rare shaky outing, lasting just 3 innings and allowing 6 runs on 5 hits, including 3 home runs. Trailing 6-4, the Phillies took a 8-6 lead in the 8th when Andrew McCutchen hit a bases-clearing double and Jean Segura followed with an RBI single. With two outs in the bottom of the 8th, the Nationals scored the tying run when Hoskins missed an easy throw from pitcher Seranthony Dominguez on an Adam Eaton soft grounder.
In the 9th, Robertson allowed a lead-off single and then three straight walks to hand the Nationals their win.
Featured Card: Amazingly enough, and per this Jayson Stark Tweet, this is the first season the Phillies have started 4-0 since 1915. Dode Paskert played 109 games for that N.L. Championship club, driving in 39 runs. This is his strip card from the W514 set, released between 1919 and 1921. Due to the loss, I went from trying to figure out which McCutchen card to scan for this post, to looking up the stats of a dude named Dode.
