Game 49 - Saturday Afternoon, May 28th in Chicago
Record - 26-23, 3rd place, 2 1/2 games behind the Mets and Nationls
One Sentence Summary: Kyle Hendricks did his best Williams Perez impersonation, pitching a seemingly effortless complete game against the Phillies in a 4-1 Cubs win.
What It Means: For the first time since May 5th, the Phillies are once again only three games above .500. For the third straight series, they'll need a win in the final game of the series to avoid the sweep.
What Happened: If not for a misplayed pop up in the ninth that Freddy Galvis turned into a double, and a dropped third strike on a Ryan Howard strikeout that allowed Galvis to score, the Phillies would have been shut out. Jerad Eickhoff turned in a so-so outing, allowing four runs on eight hits in his six innings of work. Hendricks allowed five hits, one lone run and struck out seven Phillies.
Featured Card: We caught the end of this game driving home from Doug's soccer tournament held on the Ft. Dix military base on Saturday afternoon. Doug's team was beaten badly in two games, and the sweltering heat along with another Phillies loss didn't help with our overall mood. Here's a vintage Bob Dernier card featuring him in action at Wrigley Field to help cheer us all up. Dernier cards seem to have that effect.
