Michael Mercado was one of many pitchers slotted into the fifth starter's role following Taijuan Walker's departure from the rotation in June. Recalled on June 23rd, Mercado made his big league debut in relief on June 24th, pitching a scoreless inning against the Tigers. He'd win his first start on July 2nd, allowing a run on a pair of hits in five innings of work against the Cubs. It was all downhill from there for Mercado, as he allowed a combined 15 runs, and nine home runs, in his next three appearances. He was 1-2 in five games for the Phillies with a 11.08 ERA in 13 innings pitched.
