1988 Tastykake Philadelphia Phillies Photo Cards

Card Size:  4 7/8" x 6 1/4"
Description:  The Phillies broke the mold for their 1988 photo card set and went with a set of supersized cards.  The fronts of the cards feature full color action photos while the backs contain biographical information and complete minor and Major League statistics.  The nine photo cards found in the update set have blank backs.  I've always thought this was one of the more impressive team-issued sets released by the Phillies, but I guess the larger size may have indirectly led to less cards in the set.  This is seventh year in a row the set was sponsored by Tastykake.

How Distributed:  Saturday, April 9, 1988, the first Saturday night home game of the season, was Tastykake Photo Card day with all fans receiving the original 30-card set.  (The Phillies won the game, 9-3 over the Mets, behind a complete game effort from Don Carman and 5 RBIs from Lance Parrish.)  The set was comprised of the entire opening day roster, 1987 Cy Young Award winner Steve Bedrosian, who opened the season on the disabled list, manager Lee Elia and cards for the coaches, top prospects, a team photo and the Phillie Phanatic.

The nine-card update set was released later in the season, and I believe was sold at various vendor stands throughout Veterans Stadium.  The update set checklist would have been finalized in mid-July as Larry Bowa took over for the fired Dave Bristol on July 15th and Ricky Jordan was recalled on July 16th.

Surprises:  The original 30-card set doesn't have many surprises, although there are a few omissions - see below.  The update set surprises me somewhat as I'm not sure why the Phillies decided we needed a second card of manager Elia and a stand-alone card of coach John Vukovich.  For some background here, the Phillies fired third base coach Bristol and hitting coach Del Unser on July 15th.  Vukovich, who had been serving as Elia's bench coach, moved over to third for a few games before the Phillies hired old friend Bowa who had recently been let go as the Padres manager.  Vukovich would switch jobs again on September 23rd, taking over as interim manager when Elia was fired.  Bowa wore #16 in his first stint as a Phillies coach, before switching to #2 at the start of the 1989 season.

Vukovich and Elia aren't the only two to appear in the set twice.  Prospect Keith Miller is one of eight prospects on the multi-player Phillies Prospects card and then he received his own card in the update set.  Five of the eight players on the Prospects card appeared with the Phillies in 1988 - Tom Barrett, Ron Jones, Miller, Brad Moore and Shane Turner.

Omissions:  If we use July 16th as a cut-off date for the update set, there are a few more deserving candidates.  The oft-injured pitcher Bill Dawley was recalled from Maine on April 22nd but was on the disabled list between May 11th and August 18th.  Reliever Danny Clay was recalled on April 30th and had three different stints with the Phillies in between trips back to Maine.  The only other possibility is pitcher Bill Scherrer who joined the team on July 5th but was gone less than a month later on August 2nd.  Wild speculation on my part here, but maybe one or more of those three pitchers were slated to receive cards in the update set only to be replaced by second cards for Elia and Vukovich.

Variations/Rarities:  As fellow collector Rick e-mailed me, there's also a smaller-sized Mike Schmidt card available, featuring the same photo as his regular 1988 Tastykake photo card, but on a smaller scale.

1986 Tastykake Philadelphia Phillies Photo Cards

Card Size:  3 1/2" x 5 1/4"
Description:  With the exception of the copyright date on the bottom right, these photo cards are identical in design to the set issued in 1985.  Fronts feature a full color picture and the backs include brief biographical notes on each player, coach or manager.  The multi-player Future Phillies cards return for a second year in a row and each of the four National League pennant winning teams from the franchise's past get their own team cards.

How Distributed:  The set's entry in the 2001 Standard Catalog Baseball Cards notes the "cards were given away at the Phillies' annual baseball card promotion."  Double checking the team's promotional schedule for the season, there's no actual mention of a photo card giveaway day.  My best guess is that these sets were available for sale at Veterans Stadium throughout the season.

The "Night to Remember" photo card commemorates the night the Phillies defeated the Mets 26-7, thanks in part to two first inning home runs from Von Hayes.  Hayes, Glenn Wilson, Juan Samuel, Mike Schmidt, Garry Maddox and Bo Diaz are all featured on the card in a Dick Perez painting.

Surprises:  Robin Roberts was presumably a guest instructor during spring training 1986, hence his inclusion in the set.  I always think it's odd seeing former Phillies wear current uniforms they themselves didn't wear during their playing days.  Seeing Roberts in maroon pinstriped jersey is just strange.  Dave Shipanoff is the only player to receive his own solo card not to appear in a game with the Phillies in 1986.

Omissions:  This is a very comprehensive set, featuring the entire 25-man opening day roster, the two players who started the season on the disabled list (Tom Foley and Tom Hume) and solo photo cards for six players who started the season at Triple-A Portland - Jeff Stone, Chris James, Ronn Reynolds, Randy Lerch, Fred Toliver and Rocky Childress.  The checklist creators missed out on five players who would start the season in the minors and make an appearance with the Phillies during 1986 - Greg Legg, Michael Jackson, Jeff Bittiger, Bruce Ruffin and Marvin Freeman.  Legg was the first one up, getting recalled on April 14th when Samuel landed on the disabled list.

Variations/Rarities:  Surprisingly, none.

2010-2022 Phillies Alumni Photo Cards

Card Size:  4" x 6"

Description:  Either a full color or black and white photo on the front are accompanied by the official Phillies Alumni logo at the top of the card and the subject's name in white letters on a dark red background on the bottom of the card.  The vast majority of the card backs contain a second player photo, biographical information, career and Phillies highlights.  Copyright dates can be found either on the back or fronts of most cards.

How Distributed:  Between 2010 and 2019, the Phillies created special alumni photo cards for returning players, coaches, managers and one executive to sign at various autograph events, during alumni weekends and as part of any reunion-related public appearances.  Locations and dates of where and when I obtained some of these cards are contained in the checklist below.  In September 2020, as part of their Phantastic Auction to benefit Phillies Charities, the Phillies gave collectors the opportunity to bid on 101 of these alumni photo cards, giving us the best opportunity yet to form a complete checklist of the cards released and unreleased over the past decade.

Collectors should note the copyright date on these cards does not necessarily correspond to the year of first issuance.  Complicating any efforts to fully checklist these cards is the fact the Phillies had originally printed the cards with a copyright date on the back reflecting the date of issuance.  In the mid-2010s, the copyright date on the backs of some of these cards is for the date of the photo on the front.  For example, Nick Punto's card contains statistical information through Punto's final season in 2014, but the card contains a 2003 copyright date which corresponds to the photo used.  In 2017, 2018 and 2019 the Phillies seemed to have switched back to using a copyright date that corresponds with the date of issuance and not the date of the photo.

In August 2018, the Phillies produced 20 new alumni photo cards for the express purpose of having them available for returning members of the 2008 World Championship team to sign at a potential pre-game autograph session during that season's Alumni Weekend.  For whatever reason, the planned autograph event was significantly curtailed with only Eric Bruntlett and Pedro Feliz stationed at one sole table for fans.  These 2008 alumni cards remain generally unreleased to the public, with the exception of one copy of each card made available in the 2020 Phantastic Auction along with cards for Joe Blanton, Kyle Kendrick, Jamie Moyer and Brett Myers which were all made available during the 2019 Alumni Weekend.

I've hopefully captured the vast majority, if not all, of these cards produced and issued by the Phillies between 2010 and 2019.

2022 Update:  New photo cards for Bobby Abreu, Greg Gross, Dick Ruthven and Kevin Saucier were made available prior to the game on Sunday, August 7th as part of the annual Phillies Alumni Weekend.  I'm going to keep these four new cards separate from the list below.

Surprises/Omissions:  I'm aware of 8 additional cards that were not part of the 101 cards auctioned off in September 2020 - Pat Burrell (red pinstripes jersey), Bob Dernier, Denny Doyle, Lee Elia, Gene Garber, Charlie Manuel (red pinstripes jersey), Mike Rogodzinski and a second card for Milt Thompson featuring him as a coach.

The biggest omission here is that no card has ever been produced (that we're aware of) for the greatest Phillies alumnus of all-time - Mike Schmidt.

Variations/Rarities:  There are a few variations to these cards available, all with identical photos to their "regular" counterparts.  A second Rheal Cormier card was issued with a 2017 copyright date and omitting his Minor League Career notes on the back.  There are also cards available for Dave Hollins, Ricky Jordan and Tony Taylor with both 2010 and 2011 copyright dates.  These three cards with 2010 copyrights have glossy backs as opposed to the usual matte backs.

Long-time readers of this blog are familiar with the past generosity of reader Burnell, a fellow Phillies baseball card collector.  Burnell has previously send me the scans from 2015 Topps Bunt seen here, and he is also responsible for my 1975 Topps Mini Phillies team set.  I believe the first package I ever received from him contained an awesome assortment of oddball, autograph and relic Phillies cards from 1965 to 2006.

Recently, Burnell e-mailed to ask me if I was still in need of the Topps Stickers Phillies team sets from the mid-1980s through 1990.  I responded that I definitely still needed these elusive Phillies "cards" since single stickers from these sets are rarely seen for sale, and the multi-player stickers make collating complete team sets a challenge.  He e-mailed me back that he (a) had complete team sticker sets to send my way, (b) he was adding in "a few other cards" from my want lists and (c) he didn't need anything in return.

Burnell's package arrived last week and here's a rundown of the sticker portion of the bounty:

1985 Topps Stickers (entire Phillies team set) - Included all 16 stickers featuring Phillies including the multi-player stickers.

1986 Topps Stickers (entire Phillies team set) - Included all 10 stickers featuring Phillies including the multi-player stickers.

1987 Topps Stickers (entire Phillies team set) - Included all 12 stickers featuring Phillies including the multi-player stickers.  I was also happy to add a never before seen (by me) Kent Tekulve Phillies sticker.

1988 Topps Stickers (entire Phillies team set) - Included all 13 stickers featuring Phillies including the multi-player stickers.  Also included the three Phillies Super Star Stickercards which were used as backing for the stickers.

1989 Topps Stickers (entire Phillies team set) - Included all 11 stickers featuring Phillies including the multi-player stickers.  Also included the Juan Samuel Super Star Stickercard which was used as backing for the stickers.

1990 Topps Stickers (entire Phillies team set) - Included all 11 stickers featuring Phillies including the multi-player stickers.  Also included the Von Hayes Super Star Stickercard which was used as backing for the stickers.

But wait, there's more!  I'm still in the process of sorting and crossing off the stacks of other Phillies cards Burnell sent me, most of which are of the relic or autograph variety.  There's a preview of what else was in the package in the photo above along with the stack of the complete run of Phillies from the Topps Stickers sets from 1985 to 1990.  I don't want to rush through these cards, so I'll have a future post (or two) showing off the newest additions to my collection thanks to Burnell's generosity.

1989 Tastykake Phillies

Number of Cards:  46
Card Size:  4 1/8" x 6"
Description:  The Phillies came up with this card design . . . and then took the next six years off.  The 1989 to 1995 team issued sets are all identical in design, containing the player's, coach's or manager's name in a red band with white text.  The card backs feature biographical information along with complete career statistics.  This set is notable as it's the last set (to date) to be sponsored by Tastykake.

How Distributed:  A 32-card set was given away to all fans on May 13, 1989 at Veterans Stadium and a 37-card set was available for sale at the ballpark throughout the season.  Both sets contain identical photos, but the 32-card giveaway set cards feature a darker tint and are not as vibrant as their 37-card counterparts.  The 32-card sets can be found in uncut sheets and thanks to fellow collector Rick, I recently added these cards to my collection via an eBay auction.  As (I believe) the 37-card set is more prevalent, I've listed the stadium giveaway 32-card set (and its variations) under the Variations/Rarities section below.

Given the ton of roster moves made by the club in the first half of the season, a nine-card update set was issued and available for purchase at souvenir stands throughout the Vet.  This was the second year in a row that a nine-card update set was released.

Variations/Rarities:  The 32-card stadium giveaway set omitted the following five cards - Header/sponsor card, Nieto, Jones, O'Neal and Madrid.  In addition to these omissions, this set contains the following name placement variations:

• 5 - Mike Ryan CO, name is top center (instead of top left)
• 15 - Floyd Youmans, name is bottom right (instead of bottom left)
• 41 - Steve Ontiveros, name is top center (instead of top right)
• 42 - Don Carman, name is bottom center (instead of bottom left)
• 43 - Ken Howell, name is bottom center (instead of bottom left)
• 47 - Bruce Ruffin, name is top center (instead of bottom left)

Unless you're a Phillies team issued set or Bruce Ruffin super collector (and why wouldn't you be?) there's really no need to add these cards to your collection.

Trivia:  Beckett's online database omits the header card.  The Beckett database also lists the James card as an uncorrected error card, given that James wore #18 in 1989, but the back of his card lists #26.  James had switched from #26 mid-way through the 1988 season.  Kudos to Beckett for even noticing this in the first place.

Charlie Manuel Joins the Phillies Wall of Fame

Mets 2, Phillies 1 (11 Innings)
Game 117 - Saturday Night, August 9th in Philadelphia
Record - 52-65

One Sentence Summary:  The Mets and Antonio Bastardo spoiled Charlie Manuel's night with an 11-inning, 2-1 win.

What It Means:  The Mets have taken the first two games of the series, and the Phils will try again this afternoon.  It also means the Phillies are 4-5 in games I've attended this season.

What Happened:  The offense just couldn't get anything going against Mets started Dillon Gee, and Cole Hamels was once again the victim of low run support.  Hamels pitcher seven solid innings, allowing a run on five hits.  Carlos Ruiz accounted for the lone Phillies run with a solo home run in the seventh.

Bastardo loaded the bases in the 11th and coughed up the eventual winning run when Lucas Duda singled to right.

Featured Cards/Field Report:  Whether you're a lifelong or a casual Phillies fan, I highly recommend attending a Wall of Fame ceremony at the ballpark.  The Phillies do a lot of things wrong, as evidenced by this season, but one of the things they do right are ceremonies honoring their legends and anything having to do with their alumni.

My wife and my oldest son attended Friday night's game primarily for the Roy Halladay bobble head the Phillies were giving out.  My wife and I attended this game primarily to watch former manager Manuel get inducted into the Phillies Wall of Fame.  As a bonus, we got to meet and receive autographs from Rheal Cormier (again) and Ricky Jordan, who were signing in front of the Majestic Clubhouse store prior to the game.

The ceremony for Manuel was fantastic.  Most of the living Phillies Wall of Famers came back for the ceremony, with Mike Schmidt, Steve Carlton and Darren Daulton receiving the warmest ovations.  Manuel's rambling, wonderful speech can be found here and it was great to see both Jim Thome and Halladay participate in the ceremony.
