Rosso was a somewhat surprising addition to the Phillies' Opening Day roster in 2020 but he impressed manager Joe Girardi enough that he made the team over veteran non-roster righty relievers such as Blake Parker, Robert Stock, Bud Norris or Anthony Swarzak.  Rosso made his big league debut on opening day last July and had a shaky performance, throwing a pair of wild pitches.  He's appeared in one game so far this season and was designated for assignment on May 23rd.  Rosso cleared waivers a few days later and reported to the IronPigs.

His only baseball cards to date can be found in the 2018 BlueClaws team set and in all three team sets issued in 2019 by the Double-A Reading Fightin Phils.

Phillies Set Opening Day Roster (Less One)

On Thursday afternoon, the Phillies released their 2020 Opening Day roster on their social media accounts, and most people were quick to point out the roster had only 29 names listed.  Phil Gosselin has also apparently made the team, and rightfully so, but another roster move is needed first in order to clear space for him.  There's a lot to digest here, and for the final time in 2020 here's the updated Camp Head Count.  (Until Gosselin is added, but you get the gist.)

Camp Head Count:  39 + 4 - 14 = 29.  First, Austin Davis (lhp), Tommy Hunter (rhp), Scott Kingery (2b) and Hector Neris (rhp) were reinstated from the Injured List.  Non-roster invitees Neil Walker (inf), Trevor Kelley (rhp) and Ramon Rosso (rhp) all made the team, having their contracts selected.  

By my unofficial math, and including Gosselin for now, that means the Phillies had to trim 14 from their active roster.  The following 14 players will presumably report to Lehigh Valley for the team's Taxi Squad:  Garrett Cleavinger (lhp), Edgar Garcia (rhp), Deivy Grullon (c), JoJo Romero (lhp), Nick Williams (of), along with former non-roster invitees Gosselin (inf), Mikie Mahtook (of), Nick Martini (of), Blake Parker (rhp), Damon Jones (lhp), Ronald Torreyes (inf), Connor Brogdon (rhp), Alec Bohm (inf) and Connor Seabold (rhp).

Also, Robert Stock (rhp) was designated for assignment as his spot on the 40-man roster was needed.  If Gosselin is in fact added, another spot on the 40-man roster will need to be opened up.

And finally, I noticed on the Phillies roster page on their website a few players who made the club have opted for lower uniform numbers.  Kyle Garlick (of) switched from #72 to #23, and Reggie McClain (rhp) switched from #60 to #39.

Spring Training Game 18 - Monday Afternoon, March 9th in Clearwater
Record - 12-5-1

One Sentence Summary:  An eighth inning home run from Christian Bethancourt broke a 1-1 tie and sent the Phillies to a 3-1 win over the Yankees.

What It Means:  Aaron Nola was supposed to start this game, but he was a late scratch as the presumed opening day starter has the flu.

What Happened:  Ramon Rosso got the emergency start and allowed a run on two hits in his two innings of work.  Six relievers shut down the Yankees after that, with Mauricio Llovera throwing two scoreless innings.  Bryce Harper had three more hits and Mikie Mahtook hit a third inning solo home run.

Featured Card:  Rosso has emerged as a potential bullpen candidate, and he certainly didn't hurt his chances with his outing on Monday.

Camp Head Count:  64 - 3 = 61.  Prior to the game, the Phillies optioned catcher Deivy Grullon to Lehigh Valley and infielder Arquimedes Gamboa to Reading, while re-assigning Austin Listi to minor league camp.  The Grullon move seems to indicate Andrew Knapp will once again open the season as the back-up to J.T. Realmuto.

Right on schedule, the Phillies released a list of 15 prospects invited to camp as non-roster invitees.  These 15 join the list of the prior four (officially) announced invitees.  For this next batch, instead of listing out their last major baseball card appearance, I've listed their most recent card added to my collection as most of these guys are still waiting for their first major baseball card appearance.

For me, the two most interesting names on this list are Alec Bohm and Spencer Howard, as both have a realistic chance of contributing to the 2020 Phillies.  Bohm could be the team's regular third baseman at some point this upcoming season while Howard could find himself in the starting pitching rotation.
