2024 Chachi Leftovers

2024 Chachi Almost #2
2024 Chachi Almost #3
2024 Chachi Almost #4
2024 Chachi Friendly Encounters #3

With pitchers and catchers having reported to Clearwater and only a matter of weeks to go before spring training games start, I wanted to clear out my draft folder and post a few lingering 2024 Chachi cards.  Before Christmas, I began posting cards from the 2024 Chachi set on a daily basis, wrapping up with card #64, Seth Johnson, on February 6th.  I start the process of creating Chachi cards this time each year, and as was the case with the players featured here, they did not actually suit up with the Phillies in 2024 and therefore weren't part of the official 2024 Chachi set.

Darick Hall (1b) - Hall played in 59 games with the Phillies between 2022 and 2023, and spent all of last season with the Triple-A IronPigs.  In December, he signed as a minor league free agent with the Pirates.

Rodolfo Castro (inf) - Castro lost the 2024 season to injuries, and he's back in camp with the Phillies in 2025 as a non-roster invitee.

Dylan Covey (rhp) - Covey and his beard made 28 appearances for the Phillies in 2023, making one start.  He too was hit by the injury bug in 2024, pitching in 18 games with three of the Phillies' minor league teams.  He was signed by the Mets on Halloween, placed on waivers on February 6th, and signed by the Braves on February 11th.

And finally, we met Jose Alvarado at an autograph signing at the Deptford Mall back in July.  Kody Clemens was also there and I briefly wrote about this poorly organized event here.

And with those three cards out of the way, and cleared from my draft folder, it's time to turn the page to the 2025 Chachi set!

Game 144 - Clemens Walks It Off!

Phillies 2
Rays 1
Game 144 - Monday Night, September 9th in Philadelphia
Record - 86-58, 1st Place, 7 games ahead of the Mets

One Sentence Summary:  After the Rays tied the game in the top of the ninth, Kody Clemens came through in the bottom of the ninth with a walk-off single to right to give the Phillies a 2-1 win.

What It Means:  The Phillies are riding some great vibes right now, and hopefully it continues for the next month and a half.

What Happened:  Cristopher Sanchez and the Rays' bullpen were locked in a pitchers' duel, with the first run of the game coming in the sixth when Kyle Schwarber hit his 34th home run of the season.  Orion Kerkering and Jeff Hoffman kept the Rays from scoring in the seventh and eighth, but Carlos Estevez allowed a lead-off home run to pinch-hitter Brandon Lowe in the bottom of the ninth.  Center fielder Johan Rojas almost made a spectacular catch of the ball, but it bounced out of his glove and over the fence.

In the bottom of the ninth, Bryce Harper was on first with two outs when Bryson Stott singled him over to second.  Pinch-hitter (and Millville's own) Buddy Kennedy drew a huge six-pitch walk to load the bases, and Clemens came through with his game-winning hit.

Featured Card:  Our youngest son Ben had met Clemens back in July at a poorly organized autograph signing at the Deptford Mall that also featured John Kruk and Jose Alvarado.  All autograph seekers were made to wait in one multi-hours long line whether they had tickets for Clemens, Alvarado or Kruk.  Still it was nice to briefly meet Clemens and he was kind enough to pose for a quick picture.

Field Report:  Doug and I were at this game, enjoying the company of several distinguished guests of ALS United Mid-Atlantic in the executive dining room prior to the game.  The annual sponsor's night has been pared down quite a bit, as the Phillies used to have us down on the field prior to the game for a pre-game ceremony.  I have a feeling the change is largely due to the Phillies actually fielding a competitive team in recent years as compared to the pre-pandemic lean years.

Transaction:  Tyler Gilbert (lhp) was recalled from Lehigh Valley, taking the place of Seth Johnson (rhp) who was optioned back down.

Game 96 - Phils Pounded by A's; Select Nori in Draft

2024 Chachi Draft Pick #1
Athletics 18
Phillies 3
Game 96 - Sunday Afternoon, July 14th in Philadelphia
Record - 62-34, 1st Place, 8 1/2 games ahead of the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies were destroyed by the Athletics as the team prepared to send a record eight All-Stars to the All-Star Game in Arlington.

What It Means:  I don't think it means a whole lot.  The Phillies looked ready for the break and the Athletics looked as if they were auditioning for future trades to contending teams.

What Happened:  Orion Kerkering served as the opener and tossed a perfect first inning.  It was mostly downhill from there.  Michael Mercado and Seranthony Dominguez combined to allow 10 runs on eight hits while walking four in 5 1/3 innings.  They allowed five home runs between the two of them.  Jose Ruiz gave up two more home runs and three runs overall.  Garrett Stubbs was called into duty for the final three outs and allowed five more runs, including a ninth inning grand slam to Zack Gelof.  The Athletics hit eight home runs, including a pair from future Phillie (?) Brent Rooker, two more from Seth Brown and three from Lawrence Butler.  The Phillies offense had four hits, including two doubles from Alec Bohm and a first inning solo home run from Trea Turner.

Featured Card:  On Sunday night, the Phillies selected outfielder Dante Nori from Northville High School in Michigan, as the MLB Draft's 27th pick overall.  As I've done every year since 2014, here's a card for the latest top pick by the Phillies.
