Originally drafted by the Phillies in 2015, Tyler Gilbert was dealt to the Dodgers on February 15, 2020 for Kyle Garlick.  In December 2020, he was selected by the Diamondbacks in the annual rule 5 draft, and he'd throw a no-hitter in his first major league start on August 14, 2021.  Gilbert came back to the Phillies in May, purchased from the Reds, and he'd spend most of the season with the Triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs.  He was recalled on August 17th, taking the roster spot of Tyler Phillips, and Gilbert would have six relief appearances throughout August and September.  He had no record and a 3.24 ERA in 8 1/3 innings pitched.  Gilbert was designated for assignment on December 22nd to make room on the 40-man roster for new addition Jesus Luzardo.

Game 128 - Friday Night, August 23rd in Kansas City
Record - 74-54, 1st Place, 5 games ahead of the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  Salvador Perez and the Royals took some batting practice off Phillies' starter Taijuan Walker in this 7-4 series-opening loss.

What It Means:  Walker's spot in the rotation is tenuous at best, as he's now 3-5 with a 6.26 ERA in 13 starts for the season.  In his three starts since returning from the injured list, Walker is 0-2 with a 9.26 ERA.  In those three starts, he's pitched 11 2/3 innings, allowing 12 runs on seven walks and 16 hits.

What Happened:  The Phillies trailed 6-1 after three innings, and never really had a chance to get back into this game.  On a positive note, four Phillies had multi-hit games with J.T. Realmuto, Bryce Harper and Brandon Marsh all adding doubles.

Featured Card:  Tyler Gilbert was called on to provide a few innings of mop-up relief following Walker's ouster.  He allowed a run on two hits and one walk and had one strikeout.  Gilbert was dealt by the Phillies to the Dodgers in February 2020 for Kyle Garlick, and he threw a no-hitter as a member of the Diamondbacks in 2021.  This is one of the minor league cards of his in my collection, from the 2019 IronPigs team set.

Transaction:  Austin Hays (of) was activated from the injured list and Cal Stevenson (of) was optioned back to Lehigh Valley.

Game 118 - Sunday Afternoon, August 15th in Philadelphia
Record - 61-57, 2nd Place, 1 game behind the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  Aaron Nola continued his inconsistent season, as he didn't make it out of the fifth inning in this 7-4 loss to the Reds.

What It Means:  The Phillies had Zack Wheeler, Matt Moore and Nola lined up to face the Reds in this series and wound up winning only the game started by Moore.  After an off-day Monday, they'll open a three-game set in Phoenix on Tuesday night.

What Happened:  Nola dug the Phillies into a 3-0 deficit over the first three innings.  He allowed six hits,  three walks and four runs while striking out four.  The Phillies got to within a run in the fifth when Bryce Harper walked with the bases loaded and Didi Gregorius followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-3.  But the Reds tacked on insurance runs against relievers Connor Brogdon and Hector Neris and the offense couldn't mount a comeback.  Only Odubel Herrera had a multi-hit game with three singles.

Featured Card:  On Saturday night, Tyler Gilbert made his first big league start for the Diamondbacks and threw the season's eighth no-hitter.  Gilbert was originally drafted by the Phillies in 2015 and he was traded to the Dodgers last February for outfielder Kyle Garlick.  The Dodgers left him unprotected in the rule 5 draft and the Diamondbacks took a chance on him.  I'm happy for Gilbert and I read a lot today about how the Phillies just never gave him a chance.

Transaction:  Chase Anderson (rhp) was activated from the injured list and Adonis Medina (rhp) was optioned back to Lehigh Valley after a one-game stay.

It appears the roster tinkering isn't quite over yet, as the Phillies acquired outfielder Kyle Garlick from the Dodgers on Saturday for left-handed pitching prospect Tyler Gilbert.  Gilbert had been a non-roster invitee to spring training this season and last, and he's pitched for five seasons in the Phillies minor league system.  In 36 relief appearances last year for the IronPigs, he went 2-4 with a 2.83 ERA over 47 2/3 innings.

Garlick had been designated for assignment by the Dodgers on February 11th to make room on the 40-man roster following the Mookie Betts deal.  He appeared in 30 games last season with Los Angeles, hitting .250 with 3 home runs.  In Triple-A last season, he hit .314 with 23 home runs.

To make room for Garlick on the 40-man roster, Nick Martini was designated for assignment.  Martini had been claimed off waivers from the Reds in January.

Right on schedule, the Phillies released a list of 15 prospects invited to camp as non-roster invitees.  These 15 join the list of the prior four (officially) announced invitees.  For this next batch, instead of listing out their last major baseball card appearance, I've listed their most recent card added to my collection as most of these guys are still waiting for their first major baseball card appearance.

For me, the two most interesting names on this list are Alec Bohm and Spencer Howard, as both have a realistic chance of contributing to the 2020 Phillies.  Bohm could be the team's regular third baseman at some point this upcoming season while Howard could find himself in the starting pitching rotation.
