2016 Topps #419 Aaron Altherr

Phillies 7Braves 5
Game 104 - Thursday Night, July 28th in Atlanta
Record - 47-57, 4th place, 14 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  Aaron Altherr returned from the disabled list, homering along with Maikel Franco and Tommy Joseph in this 7-5 win over the Braves.

What It Means:  Altherr was making his season debut after recovering from a torn tendon in his left wrist, suffered in spring training.

What Happened:  Hitting fifth in the line-up, Altherr went 3 for 4 with a two-run home run (1). Franco (19) and Joseph (14) hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning.

Aaron Nola struggled yet again, laboring through five innings and allowing three runs on eight hits. The bullpen managed to hold on to the lead and Jeanmar Gomez saved his 27th game.

Featured Card:  Altherr hasn't appeared in either of the Phillies team-issued photo card sets this year, which gives me hope for a third set this season.  He does have three 2016 baseball cards so far to be found in the Topps Phillies retail team set, in the Gypsy Queen set and in Topps Series Two. The latter is his first appearance in a Topps flagship release.

Transaction:  Altherr was activated from the 60-day disabled list and Peter Bourjos was added to the disabled list with a strained right shoulder, suffered when he made a leaping catch in Miami to rob Ichiro of a hit.

Phillies Probables:  Aaron Nola (5-9, 4.75), Vince Velasquez (8-2, 3.34), Jeremy Hellickson (7-7, 3.65), Jared Eickhoff (6-12, 3.83)

At the Ballpark:  It's Alumni Weekend at Turner Field, as dozens of former Braves players will return to bid farewell to the 20-year-old ballpark.  Scanning the list of alumni scheduled to appear, there are several former Phillies on the list, including:  Paul Byrd, Marvin Freeman, Wes Helms, Brian Hunter, Kevin Millwood, Dale Murphy, Jim Nash and Todd Pratt.

On Saturday, the first 20,000 fans will receive a 1991 "Worst-to-First" NLCS replica ring.

1978 Kellogg's #26 Larry Bowa

Marlins 11Phillies 1
Game 103 - Wednesday Afternoon, July 27th in Miami
Record - 46-57, 4th place, 14 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies were easily defeated on all fronts in this afternoon matinee with the Marlins, losing convincingly by an 11-1 score.

What It Means:  Per this Tweet from Phillies beat writer Meghan Montemurro, through the first six games of the current road trip, the Phillies are hitting .164 (9 for 55) with runners in scoring position.

What Happened:  Zach Eflin couldn't figure out the Marlins, allowing seven runs on nine hits and four walks in five innings of work.  In a line-up shake-up featuring Taylor Featherston at second, Tyler Goeddel in left and Jimmy Paredes in right, the offense left 10 runners on base and went 1 for 8 with runners in scoring position.  Cesar Hernandez continued his season long adventure on the base paths, getting picked off first and committing his third base running mistake in four games.

Featured Card:  Bench coach Larry Bowa wisely got himself ejected in the fourth inning for arguing balls and strikes.  The lack of Phillies baseball card variety this season has forced me to feature an over abundance of 2016 Topps products or cards from the team-issued photo card sets.  Bowa's ejection, and the lack of any clear choice for a player to feature for this post, gives me the chance to mix it up a little and feature his groovy 3-D card from the 1978 Kellogg's set.

2016 Phillies Team Issue 2 #38 Andrew Bailey

Marlins 5Phillies 0
Game 102 - Tuesday Night, July 26th in Miami
Record - 46-56, 4th place, 13 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  Jared Eickhoff was strong in his start, but no offense and a lack of relief from Andrew Bailey and Severino Gonzalez doomed the Phillies.

What It Means:  It's not going well.

What Happened:  Eickhoff allowed one run and struck out eight in his seven innings of work. Bailey and Gonzalez combined to allow four runs in the bottom of the eighth, ruining Eickhoff's solid outing.  The offense contributed four singles.

Featured Card:  Bailey's ERA is now up to 5.74 and I would think the Phillies are getting anxious to see some of the younger arms come up from Lehigh Valley.  As such, his days with the club could be numbered.  Bailey has appeared in both team issued photo card sets this year.

2016 Topps #104 Jeremy Hellickson

Phillies 4Marlins 0
Game 101 - Monday Night, July 25th in Miami
Record - 46-55, 4th place, 13 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  Jeremy Hellickson, the Phillies player most likely to be traded prior to the July 31st non-waiver trade deadline, once again pitched brilliantly in a 4-0 win over the Marlins.

What It Means:  In his last two starts against the Marlins, a team he could be pitching for soon, Hellickson has allowed one run over 14 innings.  Along with the Marlins, there were scouts from the Rangers, Giants, Cubs, Blue Jays and Orioles watching this game.

What Happened:  Hellickson, David Hernandez, Hector Neris and Jeanmar Gomez combined for the two-hit shutout.  Tommy Joseph broke a scoreless tie in the eighth with an RBI-double.

Featured Card:  I'm officially out of Hellickson Phillies cards, so here's his card from Topps Series One featuring him with the Diamondbacks.  To his credit, Hellickson has stated that he'd prefer not to be traded away from the young Phillies club, but his departure certainly seems inevitable.

Transaction:  As expected, Andres Blanco landed on the disabled list with a fractured index finger. Infielder Taylor Featherston had his contract selected from Lehigh Valley to take his place on the roster.  Featherston will be card #50 in the growing 2016 Chachi set.

In other news, Daniel Stumpf was officially sent back to the Royals organization.  The Rule 5 pick had been designated for assignment and offered back to Kansas City.

Phillies 45-55, 4th place in the N.L. East, 13 1/2 games behind the Nationals
Marlins 53-45, 2nd place in the N.L. East, 4 1/2 games behind the Nationals

Phillies Probables:  Jeremy Hellickson (7-7, 3.84), Jared Eickhoff (6-11, 3.98), Zach Eflin (3-3, 3.40)
Marlins Probables:  Jarred Cosart (0-1, 7.98), Tom Koehler (7-8, 4.42), Adam Conley (6-5, 3.58)

At the Ballpark:  Other than the availability of some theme tickets (All You Can Eat Seats, Tuesday Steals & Deals), there aren't any giveaways or promotions scheduled for this series.

2016 Topps #383 Andres Blanco

Pirates 5Phillies 4
Game 100 - Sunday Afternoon, July 24th in Pittsburgh
Record - 45-55, 4th place, 13 1/2 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  Once again, the Phillies couldn't hold the lead and a solo home run from pinch-hitter Adam Frazier in the seventh led to the Pirates 5-4 win.

What It Means:  The Phillies are 17-33 at PNC Park since it opened in 2001.  They'll head to Miami to try to change their luck.

What Happened:  The Phillies couldn't hold their 4-2 lead in the sixth as Matt Joyce hit a two-run home run off Vince Velasquez in the bottom of the inning and then Frazier followed with his solo home run off Edubray Ramos in the seventh.  Andres Blanco (4) and Odubel Herrera (11) hit solo home runs for the Phils.

Featured Card:  It was tough watching Blanco leave this game in the bottom of the fifth inning with a bloodied index finger resulting from getting spiked by Gregory Polanco at third.  Polanco was caught stealing by Carlos Ruiz, and the injury occurred as Blanco was putting the tag on Polanco. The versatile utility player is likely DL-bound, and the Phillies will lose one of their most valuable (on and off the field) players for a few weeks.

2016 Phillies Team Issue 2 #16 Cesar Hernandez

Pirates 7Phillies 4
Game 99 - Saturday Afternoon, July 23rd in Pittsburgh
Record - 45-54, 4th place, 13 1/2 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  Aaron Nola's struggles continued and the Phillies left 14 runners on base as the Pirates won, 7-4

What It Means:  For the fifth time in seven starts, Nola failed to make it out of the fifth inning.  His undoing was the bottom of the fifth when the Pirates batted around and scored five times.

What Happened:  The Phillies had 12 hits in this game and stole five bases, but went 5 for 17 with runners in scoring position.  Cesar Hernandez had two RBI singles.

Featured Card:  In putting together the series preview post a few days ago, I was somewhat surprised to see that Hernandez had surpassed Odubel Herrera for the team lead in batting average. (Herrera has since taken the lead back.)  Hernandez isn't the long-term answer at second base for the Phillies, but he's filled in nicely during these "transition" years.

2015 Reading Fightin Phils Holiday Set #5 Zach Eflin

Phillies 4Pirates 0
Game 98 - Friday Night, July 22nd in Pittsburgh
Record - 45-53, 4th place, 12 1/2 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  Zach Eflin tossed his first complete game shutout in a dominant 4-0 win over the Pirates.

What It Means:  Eflin became the first Phillies rookie to throw a complete game shutout since J.A. Happ did it in 2009.  He became the youngest Phillies pitcher to throw a complete game shutout since Kevin Gross did it in 1983.

What Happened:  Eflin allowed three hits and struck out six in his 100-pitch performance.  He didn't walk a batter.  Cameron Rupp had a nice night, driving in three runs on two hits, including a two-run home run (10) in the ninth.

Featured Card:  It's unbearably hot outside now, so here's Eflin's holiday themed card from last season to try to cool us off a little.  Topps also revealed that Eflin will become the first Phillies player this season with his second Topps Now card.

Transaction:  Prior to the game, the Daniel Stumpf era ended when the Phillies designated the Rule 5 pick for assignment.  He'll be offered back to the Royals.  Stumpf missed the bulk of the season due to an 80-game PED-related suspension.  In total, he appeared in seven games compiling a 10.80 ERA (six earned runs in five innings pitched) and his lone Phillies baseball card appearance came within this year's team-issued photo card set.

To take Stumpf's place on the roster, the Phillies recalled reliever Severino Gonzalez.

2016 Topps Archives #135 Ryan Howard

Marlins 9Phillies 3
Game 97 - Thursday Night, July 21st in Philadelphia
Record - 44-53, 4th place, 13 1/2 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  The offense looked baffled by Tom Koehler and Jared Eickhoff had another rough outing as the Marlins easily defeated the Phillies, 9-3.

What It Means:  Phillies beat writer Matt Gelb said it best in this Tweet:  I would describe tonight as a truly pathetic effort by the Phillies' line-up.

What Happened:  The Phillies managed three hits in this game.  Eickhoff lasted just five innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits.

Featured Card:  The only bright spot from this entire game was Ryan Howard's solo home run (14) in the fourth.  Earlier in the day, Howard took part in the dedication of the new Ryan Howard Training Center within the city, which was made possible with a large financial donation from the slugger.  For more on the new training center, please see this article.

2016 Phillies Team Issue 2 #58 Jeremy Hellickson

Phillies 4Marlins 1
Game 96 - Wednesday Night, July 20th in Philadelphia
Record - 44-52, 4th place, 13 1/2 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  In what could be his last home appearance with the Phillies, Jeremy Hellickson delivered his best-pitched game of the year and the Phillies defeated the Marlins, 4-1.

What It Means:  This was the sole bright spot in an otherwise dreadful series with the Marlins.

What Happened:  Hellickson pitched eight innings for his seventh win, allowing just five hits and striking out eight.  Jeanmar Gomez pitched a quick ninth inning for his 26th save.  Getting a rare start, Tyler Goeddel drove in three runs on two hits, including a two-run home run (4) in the first.

Featured Card:  I'll be sorry to see Hellickson go, but if he can bring a few more pieces to help out in 2017 (and beyond), so be it.

Field Report:  Occasionally, I'm asked to attend a Phillies game for work purposes and I'm fairly certain I've never once declined such an opportunity.  So while I was performing my professional responsibilities in the Diamond Club for this game, Jenna and the boys decided to use our normal tickets and enjoy the game from Section 319.

Be sure to check out the 2016 Season Summary page with game results and links to game summary posts.

2016 Phillies Team Issue #28 Vince Velasquez

Marlins 2Phillies 1 (10)
Game 95 - Tuesday Night, July 19th in Philadelphia
Record - 43-52, 4th place, 13 1/2 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  Vince Velasquez pitched another gem, but the offense couldn't produce and the Marlins won in the 10th on a Christian Yelich single off Daniel Stumpf.

What It Means:  So I've fallen a little behind in these game summary posts.  It's no secret that they're much more fun to compose when the Phillies are winning than when they're mired in losing streaks.

What Happened:  Velasquez threw seven strong innings, allowing just a run on three hits while striking out five.  Tommy Joseph accounted for two of the team's five hits, including a solo home run (13) in the fourth.

Featured Card:  I sure hope Velasquez appears on more Topps cards in some upcoming releases.  So far he's appeared on just a Topps Now card and within the two team-issued photo card sets.

1970 Topps #141
1970 Topps #166
1970 Topps #264
1970 Topps #643
1970 Topps Appreciation:  We've got a series coming up with a non-expansion team, which means it's time to look back on some cards from the 1970 Topps set with both Pirates and Phillies conections.  With the exception of Johnny Jeter, the other four players featured on these cards would go on to spend parts of their careers with the Phillies.

Dave Cash was traded by the Pirates to the Phillies in October 1973 for pitcher Ken Brett.  As I wrote in a Pirates series preview post a few years ago:  He'd make an immediate impact on the Phillies, playing in all 162 games in both 1974 and 1975 and making the National League All-Star team three years in a row.  In 484 games with the Phils, Cash hit .296 and his positive attitude was a huge contributing factor to the team's pennant winning 1976 season.  Following the 1976 season, Cash left via free agency, signing with the Expos.

I originally covered the other three future Phillies in another Pirates series preview post:  Of the players featured here, I know the least about Jose Pagan and I was surprised to see he accumulated a solid 15-year career as an occasional starting shortstop and utility infielder.  Pagan played in just 46 games for the 1973 Phillies at the very end of his career.  Prior to that, he spent eight seasons with the Pirates (1965-1972) and parts of seven seasons with the Giants (1959-1965).

Pagan, Richie Hebner and Al Oliver were all teammates on the World Champion 1971 Pirates club.  Hebner joined the Phillies for two seasons in 1977 and 1978, and Scoop spent a brief time with the Phils in the summer of 1984.

These repetitive series preview posts make me anxious to move onto a different era of Phillies baseball for the 2017 season.  I had originally pegged the 1971 Topps design as the early favorite for the 2017 Chachi set and by extension the 2017 series preview posts.  But I'm starting to yearn for something from the 1980s or perhaps even the early 1990s.  The 2017 Chachi Set Planning Committee will have to meet soon to ponder this crucial decision further.

Fun at the @Phillies Photo Day! (Part Three)

2016 Chachi Photo Day #26
Marlins 3Phillies 2 (11)
Game 94 - Monday Night, July 18th in Philadelphia
Record - 43-51, 4th place, 13 1/2 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  Aaron Nola's six scoreless innings were wasted when Jeanmar Gomez couldn't convert the save and the Marlins eventually won the game in 11.

What It Means:  The extra inning loss was especially tough to take, given that the Phillies were able to score twice off Marlins starting pitcher Jose Fernandez.  Fernandez struck out 14 and notched his 500th career strike out in this game.

What Happened:  The Phils got their runs on a Maikel Franco ground out in the first and a Tommy Joseph solo home run (12) in the seventh.  Nola lasted six innings, giving up only two hits and striking out five.  Gomez blew his third save of the season and Brett Oberholtzer surrendered a lead-off home run to Martin Prado in the 11th.

Featured Cards:  This is the last round of Phillies Photo Day custom cards in the very limited 2016 Chachi Photo Day insert set.  Again, I was pleasantly surprised at how accommodating and gracious most of the Phillies players, coaches and broadcasters were as they took the time to pose for photos with our sons.  The only player not walking around pre-game was Jared Eickhoff, who was that day's starting pitcher.  Every other player, coach and broadcaster (including veterans Carlos Ruiz and Ryan Howard) spent more than a half hour on the field posing for photos with the fans.

Kudos to the Phillies for a very enjoyable, fan-friendly experience!

Fun at the @Phillies Photo Day! (Part Two)

2016 Chachi Photo Day #19
Mets 5Phillies 0
Game 93 - Sunday Afternoon, July 17th in Philadelphia
Record - 43-50, 4th place, 13 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  Jacob deGrom completely dominated the Phillies line-up in this 5-0 Mets win.

What It Means:  The Phillies dropped the series with the Mets and they'll open up a four game series against the Marlins on Monday night.  It would be nice to take at least three of four from the Fish in order to creep up a little closer in the Wild Card standings.

What Happened:  The only hit allowed by deGrom was a single to Phillies pitcher Zach Eflin.  Eflin allowed three runs on five hits in his six innings of work.

Featured Cards:  There's certainly no reason to commemorate this game from a Phillies fan's perspective, so I'm presenting the next round of Photo Day cards taken on Saturday afternoon.
