Revisiting the 2004 Phillies Photo Day - 15 Years Ago Today

The 2004 Phillies Photo Day crowd

The first Phillies Photo Day I attended was back in 1984, and I shared some pictures from that day in a post from five years ago.  My Dad was not a fan of crowds or events with any degree of chaos or disorganization, so naturally he hated Photo Day.  After making our way down to the field for the 1984 event, we never went back again.  It would be 20 years until I'd participate in the crowded and controlled chaos that is Photo Day.


Fast forward to May 29, 2004 when Jenna and I were dating and we were invited by my then employer to attend a Phillies game from the comfort of a suite at the newly opened Citizens Bank Park.  Unbeknownst to us, it was also the first Photo Day at the new ballpark and we decided to casually walk down to the field to take some pictures.  This was pre-kids, pre-Chachi sets and pre-The Phillies Room, so I had no real outlet to share any of these pictures back then.  The pictures I took pretty much sat forgotten until recently when I was looking through the thousands (!) of pictures I had taken over the years at Citizens Bank Park.


I thought the time was right to produce a limited edition insert set to mark the 15th anniversary of this first Photo Day at Citizens Bank Park, and the 16 cards presented here were the best of the bunch.  I had a few other pictures I deemed unusable, such as Chase Utley posing with an unknown female fan, Harry Kalas with his eyes fully closed and a picture featuring only half of Larry Andersen's head.

We hope to return this year to this annual event, even though it's slightly crowded and at times chaotic.

At the Ballpark:  There are no giveaways scheduled for this series in Phoenix, but fans will get to enjoy climate-controlled ballgames under the roof while there's sweltering heat outside.  Sadly, Amaury Telemaco isn't one of the Racing Legends along with Randy Johnson, Luis Gonzalez, Matt Williams or Mark Grace.

2000 Philadelphia Phillies Photo Cards

Number of Cards:  36 (with perhaps another 11 in an update set)
Card Size:  4" x 6"
Description:  For this set, the Phillies decided to actually come up with a baseball card design, and not just figure out a new font to use for each player's name.  For the first time ever, the team logo is on the front of the cards and the player's, coach's or manager's name is in bold white text against a blue curved background.  Mike Lieberthal's card celebrates his 1999 Gold Glove win.

The card backs feature biographical information and complete career statistics along with the Phillies 2000 logo that was ubiquitous this season on the team Yearbook, marketing material, game programs, etc.  The Hatfield logo appears on the back of each card as well, making me wonder if this set should be christened the 2000 Hatfield Phillies set?

How Distributed:  The 36-card set was available for sale at Veterans Stadium throughout the season.  Based on Rick's comment below, there are also 11 update cards available.  Given the rampant player turnover in 2000, aided by the Curt Schilling trade, it makes sense that the team would issue its first true update set in five years.

For now, I'm listing the 11 update cards under the Variations/Rarities section until I know for certain they were issued together in set form.

My copies of Glanville's and Wolf's cards are signed . . . and I have no idea why.  My guess is that I attended one of the old Phillies Winter Caravan stops where these two players were signing autographs, but my memory of the early 2000s is hazy at best.

The First Appearance designation is for players who have never before appeared within a Phillies team issued set.  These players may have already appeared on other Phillies baseball cards.

2000 Phillies Team Issue #47 Amaury Telemaco

Game 124 - Sunday Afternoon, August 17th in San Francisco
Record - 54-70, 5th Place, 16 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  The Phils wasted another solid outing from David Buchanan, dropping this game to the Giants, 5-2.

What It Means:  If you're actually reading this game summary post, three days after the fact, thank you for reading!  As we slog through this challenging season, I'm grateful for your comments, your feedback and your continued patronage.

What Happened:  The offense went 1 for 7 with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on base.  Buchanan allowed three runs (two earned) in his 6 2/3 innings of work.

Featured Card:  This stat courtesy of @BoopStats . . . With this loss, the Phillies dropped a season low 16 games under .500.  The last time they were that many games under .500 was October 1, 2000, when they wrapped up the 2000 season 32 games under .500.  The losing pitcher on that day for the Phillies was the immortal Amaury Telemaco.

2001 Phillies Team Issue #47 Amaury Telemaco

Nationals 6, Phillies 5

Game 3 - Thursday Afternoon, April 8th in Washington

The last time the Phillies started a season with a 3-0 record was 2001. The Phils swept the Marlins in Miami with Amaury Telemaco, Chris Brock and Rheal Cormier recording the first three wins of the '01 season for new manager Larry Bowa. In April 2001, Nelson Figueroa was pitching in Scranton for the Phils' AAA affiliate. He'd be summoned to the big club on May 13th, eventually pitching in 19 games with the Phils in 2001.

Fast forward 9 years to this afternoon, and Nelson Figueroa was again on the mound for the Phils, wearing #44 in what I'm going to suggest (hope?) was some sort of strange homage to Vicente Padilla. (Padilla, Figueroa, Travis Lee and Omar Daal will be forever linked as the players obtained from the Diamondbacks for Curt Schilling back in July 2000.) Figueroa allowed a Ryan Zimmerman bloop RBI double in the 7th inning, permitting the Nationals to regain the lead for good and eventually win the game.

Kyle Kendrick struggled in his 2010 debut, lasting only 4 innings and allowing 5 runs on 6 hits. But the Phillies struggled mightily in clutch situations, going just 1 for 14 with runners in scoring position.

Doubles and Puddin': Jayson Werth had three doubles on the day, all against the Nationals' starting pitcher, Craig Stammen. The last Phillie to hit 4 doubles in a game was Willie "Puddin' Head" Jones, who accomplished the feat against the Boston Braves on April 20, 1949.
