Game 60 - McCutchen Injured; Phils Draft Stott

2019 Topps Now Road
to Opening Day #OD-278
Padres 8Phillies 2
Game 60 - Late Monday Night, June 3rd in San Diego
Record - 33-27, 1st place, 1/2 game ahead of the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies suffered a brutal loss in this series opener against the Padres.

What It Means:  This is the game that will be remembered for being the final game played by Andrew McCutchen in 2019.  In the top of the first, McCutchen found himself in a rundown and he tried to avoid being tagged with a hop and a stretch that ended up tearing his left ACL.  He'll miss the remainder of the season and the hope is that he's ready to go in February when the team reports to Clearwater.

McCutchen had quickly become my favorite player on the team, and I felt sick watching his play unfold and I felt sicker on Tuesday afternoon when the extent of the injury was announced.  If the Phillies fail to make the postseason this year, McCutchen's injury will be at the top of the list of reasons why they ultimately fell short.  With that being said, I still believe.

What Happened:  Aaron Nola got shelled (5 1/3 innings, 6 runs) and JD Hammer allowed a grand slam to Manny Machado.  Jay Bruce, who entered the game for the injured McCutchen, collected his first hit with the club and J.T. Realmuto homered (9) in the seventh.

Featured Card:  It bums me out this is probably the last McCutchen card I'll feature until 2020.

2019 Chachi Almost #3
Transactions:  Bruce was activated and Austin Davis was recalled.  Nick Williams and Cole Irvin were both sent back down to Lehigh Valley.

And with the 14th pick in the annual amateur player draft, the Phillies selected shortstop Bryson Stott from UNLV.  Stott is big (6' 3", 200 pounds) but he's projected to stick at shortstop for now.  He's a finalist for this year's Golden Spikes Award, and the hope is that Stott finds himself in red pinstripes in just a few years' time.

Hate to see well-loved players go down...

If Bryce Harper calls Stott "Chubbs," I wonder what he calls Jay Bruce, who (from the back of the newest Chachi card) is the same height and 25 pounds heavier?
