Acquired:  Traded as part of a 3-team deal by the Tampa Bay Rays to the Phillies, December 29, 2020.  The Los Angeles Dodgers sent Dillon Paulson and a player to be named later to the Tampa Bay Rays.  The Phillies sent Garrett Cleavinger to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

It was a lost season for Jose Alvarado.  Expected to be a force at the back-end of the bullpen, and nearly unhittable at the start of the season, Alvarado was suspended on May 18th for 80 games after testing positive for a PED.  He had likely been heading to the All-Star Game, and instead he missed the bulk of the summer and was ineligible for the postseason.  He returned on August 19th, but wasn't nearly as effective, and the Phillies shut him down for the season on September 12th with a left forearm strain.  In 28 games, Alvarado was 4-2 with 3.81 ERA and seven saves.  His club option was picked up on November 5th, and he'll return for at least one more season in 2026.
