Spring Training Game 18 - Friday Night, March 19th in Tampa
Record - 9-8-1
One Sentence Summary: The Phillies were no-hit until the 8th inning, but scored four in the 9th to come away with a surprising 4-1 win.
What It Means: With potential starting pitching candidates Zach Eflin, Spencer Howard and Vince Velasquez all ailing, the Phillies turned to Ivan Nova who did well against his former team. Nova was wild, allowing three walks, but he gave up only a run in his three innings of work.
What Happened: And the bullpen continued to look great, with Tony Watson and Brandon Kintzler appearing to have shaken off the troubles they each experienced recently. Both threw scoreless innings with Kintzler striking out the side. Enyel De Los Santos (2.08 ERA), JoJo Romero (1.80 ERA) and Sam Coonrod (1.80 ERA) were effective out of the bullpen too.
Yankees reliever Kyle Barraclough walked the bases loaded to start the ninth, and allowed the tying run to score on a wild pitch. Former Phillie Reggie McClain relieved Barraclough and allowed the go-ahead run to score when he dropped the throw back from the catcher. Darick Hall added a two-run double to give the Phils a 4-1 lead.
Featured Card: McClain only pitched in five games for the Phillies in 2020, so I was pleasantly surprised when he received a card in the Topps Heritage High Numbers release.
Camp Head Count: 63
