2018 Choice Lehigh Valley IronPigs #32 |
Game 114 - Tuesday Night, August 8th in Philadelphia
Record - 62-52, 2nd Place, 10 1/2 games behind the Braves
One Sentence Summary: Joey Meneses hit two home runs for the Nationals as the Phillies couldn't close out the double header sweep.
What It Means: The Phillies still sit atop the Wild Card standings, tied with the Giants, and with a three-game cushion. They'll try to take the next two games from the last place Nationals.
What Happened: The Phillies led 4-2 after six innings, collecting runs on an RBI double from the surging Trea Turner, a two-run home run from Bryce Harper and an RBI-single from Bryson Stott. Ranger Suarez worked 5 2/3 innings, allowing a two-run home run to Ildemaro Vargas in the fourth. He departed with the bases loaded in the sixth, with Jeff Hoffman working out of the jam. Hoffman wouldn't be so lucky in the seventh, as Meneses hit a two-run home run to left center to tie the game at 4-4. With the game still tied and Craig Kimbrel on the mound, Meneses connected again in the ninth with a solo home run to give the Nationals the lead and ultimately, the victory.
Featured Card: Meneses spent the 2018 season with the IronPigs, winning International League MVP honors and somehow not getting called up by the Phillies all season. I wanted to share his 2018 IronPigs card for this post, but I've already posted it twice. Here's another card from that 2018 IronPigs team set, featuring one of their many mascots, Ribbie. (I've got nothing.)
