2022 Choice Reading Fightin Phils #27 |
Game 89 - Wednesday Night, July 13th in Toronto
Record - 46-43, 3rd Place, 9 game behind the Mets
One Sentence Summary: Zack Wheeler was hit hard in his short outing and the short-handed Phillies couldn't get their offense going in this 8-2 loss to the Blue Jays.
What It Means: We'll never know of course how the team would have fared if everyone had been fully vaccinated, but missing several key pieces of the roster certainly didn't help as the Blue Jays swept the quick two-game series. So much for momentum, as the Phils have now lost four in a row. The Phillies open a three-game series in Miami on Friday night before scattering for the All-Star break.
What Happened: Wheeler was chased in the fifth inning having allowed six runs on seven hits, including a pair of home runs. Nick Duron and Bubby Rossman made their big league debuts in this game, with Duron escaping unscathed but Rossman allowing a two-run home run to Teoscar Hernandez. Bryson Stott connected for a two-run home run in the seventh for the Phillies' only runs of the game.
Featured Card: Rossman was sent back to Reading following the game, but it was still cool to see him pitch an inning in the majors. He had pitched in the Dodgers organization between 2014 and 2016, and has been pitching for independent teams since 2017, including with the Sioux City Explorers, the Cleburne Railroaders and the Nerds Herd in Illinois. If you're looking for a recent baseball card of his, Rossman is featured in the recently released Reading Fightin Phils team set.
Transactions: Michael Kelly (rhp) was optioned to Lehigh Valley. Will Toffey (inf) had his contract selected from the IronPigs and Rossman (rhp) was added to the roster as a replacement player.
