Game 54 - Sunday Afternoon, June 5th in Philadelphia
Record - 25-29, 3rd Place, 10 1/2 games behind the Mets
One Sentence Summary: Bryce Harper hit a game-tying grand slam in the eighth inning and Bryson Stott hit a walk-off three-run home run in the ninth to send the suddenly surging Phillies to a 9-7 win over the Angels.
What It Means: The Phillies Notes Twitter account shared this was the first time the Phillies hit a grand slam and walk-off home run in the same game since July 22, 1985 when John Russell hit a grand slam in the first inning and Mike Schmidt walked it off against the Astros.
What Happened: Kyle Gibson was knocked out early, having allowed five runs on six hits in just 3 1/3 innings of work. Trailing 6-2 in the eighth, Harper hit his dramatic slam off Angels' reliever Raisel Iglesias. Corey Knebel continued his frustrating season by allowing the Angels to take the lead in the top of the ninth, walking the lead-off batter. Tyler Wade scored the go-ahead run when Rhys Hoskins continue corral a hard hit ground ball that went to right field for a hit. In the bottom of the ninth, now behind 7-6, Alex Bohm and Didi Gregorius both singled and Jimmy Herget entered for the Angels with two outs to try to retire Stott. The rookie his his second home run of the year into the right field stands, winning the game and kicking off a jubilant post-game celebration.
Featured Cards: I felt the need to make a card using this photo of Harper and Mike Trout from Friday night's pre-game ceremony, and that was going to be the lone card for this post until Stott's big blast. The Stott card is from the Reading Fightin Phils' team-issued set celebrating the top 25 prospects in the Phillies system. I imagine we're close to a complete onslaught of Stott cards from Topps for the rest of 2022 and all of 2023.
Transactions: Gregorius (ss) was activated from the injured list and Nick Maton (inf) took his place on the list with a shoulder strain. Also, Roman Quinn (of) cleared waivers and opted for free agency in lieu of reporting back to the IronPigs.
