Game 24 - Wednesday Night, April 28th in St. Louis
Record - 12-12, Tied for 1st Place, 1/2 game ahead of the Mets
One Sentence Summary: Bryce Harper was hit in the face with a 97mph fastball and the Phillies rallied to defeat the Cardinals, 5-3.
What It Means: Harper is apparently going to be fine, but it was an incredibly scary moment. He walked off the field on his own and posted a video to his social media account following the game announcing his "face is still there." Pitcher Genesis Cabrera drilled Didi Gregorius in the back with his next pitch, leading to home plate umpire Chris Segal warning both benches. That prompted manager Joe Girardi's first ejection of the season as Girardi rightfully argued there was no need to issue the warning against the Phillies. To be continued . . .
What Happened: Following that drama, Andrew McCutchen singled home pinch-runner Matt Joyce, giving the Phillies a 4-3 lead. The Cardinals had led 3-1 after four innings on home runs hit by Tyler O'Neill and Paul Goldschmidt off Phillies starter Vince Velasquez. Brad Miller tied the score in the top of the fifth with a two run home run.
The Phillies bullpen threw 4 2/3 scoreless innings after Velasquez's early departure, with Hector Neris locking down his fifth save.
Featured Card: If I had any more Miller cards, and if not for the scary moment with Harper, there would be a Miller card featured here. Instead, here's another recently added Harper card, this one from the 70 Years of Topps Baseball insert set, celebrating the 1963 Topps design.
