Game 80 - Late Thursday Night, June 27th in Los Angeles
Record - 38-42, 3rd Place, 7 1/2 games behind the Braves
Colossal Post-Vacation Catch-Up, Part 6 of 9
One Sentence Summary: Ryan Howard had a bad day at the office as the Phillies dropped the first game of the Dodgers series, 6-4.
What It Means: After a while, these types of losses all seem to blend together. Howard took full responsibility for this loss, blaming his slip while trying to field a bunt in the seventh inning and his 0 for 4 performance at the plate.
What Went Wrong: The offense generated 14 hits, including a four-hit performance from Delmon Young, but the bats went 2 for 8 with runners in scoring position. Howard was the biggest rally killer, grounding into a key double play in the fifth with runners on first and second. Justin De Fratus took the loss when he allowed two runs to score in the seventh.
Featured Card: The result of this game was secondary to the awful news coming out of Philadelphia on Thursday that former Phillies catcher Darren Daulton had been diagnosed with two brain tumors. I immediately thought back to the days we received similar news with regards to Tug McGraw and John Vukovich. Our thoughts and prayers are with Dutch right now and I hope his surgery, which happened yesterday, went well.
