One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies offense continued to unload on Dodgers pitching, and Ranger Suarez went seven solid innings in this 8-3 win.

What It Means:  Somehow, the Phillies have won the first three games of this series and they'll go for the four-game series sweep this afternoon.

What Happened:  Suarez needed to go deep in this game due to the overused Phillies bullpen needing a rest, and he came through.  In seven innings of work, he allowed three runs on five hits while striking out six.  Seranthony Dominguez and Connor Brogdon shut down the Dodgers over the final two innings, with Brogdon striking out the side in the ninth.

The Phillies hit four home runs - Jean Segura had a three-run home run in the first, Bryce Harper added a three-run moonshot home run in the third, Kyle Schwarber and Rhys Hoskins both hit solo home runs in the fourth.  Batting lead-off, Hoskins went 3 for 4 with a pair of runs scored.  Harper was 3 for 4 with a double and home run.  With nine home runs each, Schwarber and Harper are tied for the National League lead with three other sluggers.

Game 33 - Phils Win Another Wild One in L.A.

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies battled throughout this game, ultimately winning in extras over the Dodgers, 12-10.

What It Means:  Somehow I managed to watch all of this game, witnessing the final out somewhere around 2:30am.  Unbelievably, the Phillies will go for a series win late tonight with Ranger Suarez on the mound.

What Happened:  At various points in this game, the Dodgers led 5-2, the score was tied 5-5, the Phillies were up 8-6, the scored was tied at 9-9 and the Phillies took the lead for good to win 12-10.  Kyle Gibson was perfect the first two innings and then imploded in the third, exiting having allowed six runs on eight hits.

There were a lot of big hits in this game from the Phillies offense, including a two-run home run from Kyle Schwarber in the fourth to tie the game at 5-5.  The Phillies pulled ahead in the sixth on an Alec Bohm sacrifice fly, followed by an RBI-double from Bryce Harper and an RBI-single from Nick Castellanos.  Harper added a solo home run, his eighth, in the eighth inning.

With the Phillies leading 9-7, Jeurys Familia attempted to secure the win in the bottom of the ninth, but Justin Turner hit a two-run home run to tie the game.  In the top of the 10th, Castellanos delivered again with a two-run double and in the bottom of the 10th, Francisco Morales worked out of trouble to notch his first big league save.

Featured Card:  Castellanos delivered the game-winning hit, but given my lack of his baseball cards in my collection, I'll go with Bryson Stott here.  Stott drove in three runs, including the game's first two runs in the second inning with an RBI-single to left.  Here's the newest card of his in my collection, a Topps Now offering from opening day.

Game 32 - Phils Hold On to Win Opener in L.A.

Record - 15-17, Tied for 2nd Place, 6 1/2 games behind the Mets

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies bullpen nearly blew another game in which they had led by 7-1, but fortunately the Dodgers bullpen was shaky as well and the Phillies would ultimately win, 9-7.

What It Means:  The Phillies won the series opening game against the best team in baseball in their home ballpark, so that's something to be happy about.  I was preparing for a medical procedure on Friday morning so I was able to watch the entirety of this game, whether I wanted to or not.

What Happened:  The Phillies were up 7-1 after five and a half innings.  Bryce Harper hit a solo home run in the first and added an RBI-double in the fifth.  Three runs crossed in the second on a Kyle Schwarber RBI-single and a Johan Camargo two-run home run.  Jean Segura scored a head's up run in the fourth, tagging and scoring on a Camargo pop up to deep second base.  After the game was tied 7-7 (see below), the Phillies scored in the ninth on a Daniel Hudson wild pitch and a Harper sacrifice fly.

Zack Wheeler returned from the Covid list and provided 5+ innings, allowing three runs on six hits.  Jose Alvarado was the culprit out of the bullpen who couldn't hold a 7-3 lead.  Alvarado allowed four runs on five hits and a walk in the eighth inning and Andrew Bellatti was able to work out of a bases loaded mess to keep the score tied.  Closer Corey Knebel created some drama of his own by loading the bases in the ninth, with no outs, before retiring Austin Barnes, Cody Bellinger and Chris Taylor on three fly outs.  Knebel recorded his seventh save.

Featured Card:  Harper went 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs in this game, and he'll be settling in as the team's permanent DH for a bit longer.  Tests show he's partially torn his UCL, leaving him unable to throw and play the field.  As much as I'm a National League purist, the introduction of the permanent DH in the National League in 2022 is extremely fortuitous, considering that otherwise Harper would have been lost for the season because of his injury.

Transaction:  Wheeler (rhp) was activated from the Covid injured list and Bailey Falter (lhp) was optioned back to Lehigh Valley.

One Sentence Summary:  Rhys Hoskins hit a fourth inning grand slam as the Phillies escaped Seattle with a series win.

What It Means:  Winning two out of three in Seattle was great, and now the Phillies are tasked with taking on the Dodgers in a four-game set beginning late Thursday night.

What Happened:  With Zack Wheeler and Zach Eflin on the Covid-injured list, Bailey Falter was called upon for the spot start and he did well.  Falter threw exactly 65 pitches (his limit) in 4 2/3 innings, allowing a run on five hits while striking out four.  Seranthony Dominguez picked up the win with an inning and a third of scoreless relief, and Corey Knebel recorded the final four outs to notch his sixth save.

Featured Card:  All the Phillies needed was Hoskins' slam.  In the series, Hoskins was 6 for 13 (.462) with three home runs and seven RBIs.

Transaction:  Falter (lhp) was recalled prior to the game and Matt Vierling (of) was optioned down to Lehigh Valley.  In 23 games so far this season, Vierling is hitting just .170 (8 for 47) with a pair of doubles, raising his batting average from .189 to .222.  He's also hitting .289 so far in the month of May.

One Sentence Summary:  The Mariners didn't hit the ball hard, but they scored more runs than the Phillies in this 5-4 loss in Seattle.

What It Means:  After splitting the first two games of the series, the Phillies will go for the elusive series win on Wednesday afternoon.

What Happened:  The Mariners took advantage of bloop hits, softly hit singles and four Phillies errors in this frustrating loss.  Aaron Nola didn't pitch poorly, but he did allow nine hits and five runs (four earned) in his 5 1/3 innings of work.  Bryce Harper had a pair of doubles with Nick Castellenos, Rhys Hoskins and Jean Segura all hitting solo home runs.  Manager Joe Girardi was ejected in the second inning when third base umpire Bill Miller refused to review a play in which Mariners runner Adam Frazier was clearly out.

Featured Card:  Girardi, who took over as Phillies manager before the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, has managed 252 Phillies game and has yet to appear on a Phillies baseball card.  Topps has stopped featuring manager cards in its flagship sets, and managers haven't appeared in recent years in their Heritage sets either.  And with the Phillies not issuing photo cards over the past two seasons, Girardi doesn't even have a team-issued card to his name.  His Phillies-less streak should hopefully end soon when the Phillies finally release a 2022 photo card set, but for now here's his first Chachi card from that 2020 season.

What It Means:  I wish I had been awake to see this?

What Happened:  These heavy offensive games were a regular occurrence for the Phillies back during their golden years of 2007 to 2011, but when they happen now it's a pleasant surprise.  Bryce Harper, Nick Castellanos and Rhys Hoskins all collected three hits a piece, with Jean Segura driving in three runs in his return to Seattle.  The Phillies got back-to-back home runs from Segura and Hoskins in the second to start the night's outburst.  J.T. Realmuto contributed two RBI-singles.

Ranger Suarez, Francisco Morales and James Norwood combined for the four-hit shutout against the Mariners.  Morales, making his major league debut, allowed a walk and struck out three in his first two innings in the big leagues.

Featured Card:  The Phillies need for Hoskins to get hot, and his three-hit night raised his season average 21 points from .189 to .210.  Here's his 2022 Topps Heritage card, which is a good representation of a card that could have been in the original 1973 Topps set.

One Sentence Summary:  The Mets easily handled the Phillies in this sparsely attended Mother's Day matinee.

What It Means:  Honestly, I have no idea.  We were enjoying Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness at the movie theater and almost completely missed this game.  Turns out we didn't miss much.

What Happened:  Cristopher Sanchez received the spot start, and gave up a pair of runs on a first inning home run to Pete Alonso.  Alonso connected again for a three-run home run off reliever Nick Nelson in the fifth inning.  The Phillies' only run came on Jean Seguara's 100th career home run, hit in the second inning off Mets' starter Chris Bassitt.

Featured Card:  Congrats are in order for Segura, who provided the sole Phillies highlight from this game.  The Phillies passed along a note that there are now five active players with 100 home runs, 225 doubles and 45 triples:  Jean Segura, Mike Trout, Andrew McCutchen, Charlie Blackmon and Starling Marte.

One Sentence Summary:  In a game the Phillies almost had to win, they held on to defeat the Mets, 3-2.

What It Means:  Both Friday and Saturday's games with the Mets were washed out due to heavy rain in the area.  Friday's game will be made up as part of a double header later in August, and the two teams played a double header on Sunday to make up Saturday's game.

What Happened:  Kyle Gibson turned in another solid start, earning the win with six innings of six-hit, two run ball.  Seranthony Dominguez, Jose Alvarado and Corey Knebel shut the Mets down over the final three innings with a combined seven strikeouts.  Bryce Harper hit a solo home run in the first off Mets' starter Max Scherzer and added an RBI-single in the third.  Bryson Stott singled home Jean Segura with what turned out to be an important insurance run in the fourth.

Transactions:  In a series of transactions all announced separately, the Phillies on Saturday placed Didi Gregorius (ss) on the injured list with a left knee sprain and recalled Bryson Stott (ss).  Then on Sunday, Zach Eflin (rhp) landed on the Covid injured list with Francisco Morales (rhp) getting recalled.  Cristopher Sanchez (lhp) was added as the 27th man for the double header.  Finally, Zack Wheeler (rhp) also landed on the Covid injured list with Connor Brogdon (rhp) getting recalled.
