1991 Medford Philadelphia Phillies Photo Cards

Number of Cards:  46
Card Size:  4 1/8" x 6"
Description:  For the third year in a row, the card fronts feature an action photo with the player's, coach's or manager's name in a red band with white text.  The card backs feature biographical information along with complete career statistics.  Medford Food Company took over sponsorship of the set in 1991, and they'd sponsor the set for the next two years.

How Distributed:  The original 35-card base set was available for sale at Veterans Stadium throughout the 1991 season.  Details vary as to how the 11-card update series was originally distributed.  The 2001 Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards describes two updates being issued.  The first update being the three card highlight set featuring white bordered cards for Tommy Greene, Terry Mulholland and Dale Murphy.  Mulholland's card celebrates his no-hitter from August 15, 1990, while Greene's celebrates his no-hitter from May 23, 1991.  Murphy's card commemorates his 2,000th hit on May 29, 1991.

The second update, according to the Catalog, contained eight cards and featured new manager Jim Fregosi, the Phillie Phanatic and six new Phillies players.  I have no recollection of purchasing two separate update sets at the Vet during the 1991 season, but my memory is admittedly starting to get a bit foggy.  The second update would not have been released before July 15th, the day Steve Searcy was acquired from the Tigers, and not after July 31st, the day Mike Hartley was acquired from the Dodgers.  Searcy is in the set while Hartley is not.

Jim Lindeman's uniform number is listed as #55, which is the number he wore during spring training.  He switched to #19 before the season started, taking the number most recently occupied before him by John Kruk.  Sil Campusano attended spring training wearing #11 and started the season on the disabled list.  When Fregosi was hired and took #11, Campusano switched to #16, the former number of departed manager Nick Leyva.

Broadcasters (0):  If a broadcaster card had been issued at the start of the season, it would have featured future manager Fregosi as he had recently joined the broadcast team.

Surprises:  I find it strange all the coaches received cards in the first set, but the manager at the beginning of the season (Leyva) was omitted.  Leyva was fired on April 23rd, so my guess is the original 35-card set wasn't finalized until after his departure.  Or the first series originally contained 36 cards and the Leyva card was pulled after his firing.

Omissions:  Every Phillies player from opening day through July 31st has a card in this set except for Dave LaPoint, Rick Schu and Amalio Carreno.  LaPoint made the opening day roster but was released on April 23rd, the same day Leyva was dismissed.  Schu had a brief reunion with his original club, and he was on the active roster between May 28th and June 19th.  He was brought back up on August 28th and stayed with the team the rest of the season.  Carreno was recalled on July 2nd and sent back down on July 15th.  Ken Howell and Steve Ontiveros both spent the entire season on the disabled list and while Howell received a card in the set, Ontiveros did not.

Variations/Rarities:  As fellow collector Rick pointed out in a comment to the original post for this set, six additional cards were issued for former Phillies who were guests at the annual ALS Phillies Phestival.  These cards have only a red Phillies logo and a 1991 copyright on the backs, with no Medford logo.

2010-2022 Phillies Alumni Photo Cards

Card Size:  4" x 6"

Description:  Either a full color or black and white photo on the front are accompanied by the official Phillies Alumni logo at the top of the card and the subject's name in white letters on a dark red background on the bottom of the card.  The vast majority of the card backs contain a second player photo, biographical information, career and Phillies highlights.  Copyright dates can be found either on the back or fronts of most cards.

How Distributed:  Between 2010 and 2019, the Phillies created special alumni photo cards for returning players, coaches, managers and one executive to sign at various autograph events, during alumni weekends and as part of any reunion-related public appearances.  Locations and dates of where and when I obtained some of these cards are contained in the checklist below.  In September 2020, as part of their Phantastic Auction to benefit Phillies Charities, the Phillies gave collectors the opportunity to bid on 101 of these alumni photo cards, giving us the best opportunity yet to form a complete checklist of the cards released and unreleased over the past decade.

Collectors should note the copyright date on these cards does not necessarily correspond to the year of first issuance.  Complicating any efforts to fully checklist these cards is the fact the Phillies had originally printed the cards with a copyright date on the back reflecting the date of issuance.  In the mid-2010s, the copyright date on the backs of some of these cards is for the date of the photo on the front.  For example, Nick Punto's card contains statistical information through Punto's final season in 2014, but the card contains a 2003 copyright date which corresponds to the photo used.  In 2017, 2018 and 2019 the Phillies seemed to have switched back to using a copyright date that corresponds with the date of issuance and not the date of the photo.

In August 2018, the Phillies produced 20 new alumni photo cards for the express purpose of having them available for returning members of the 2008 World Championship team to sign at a potential pre-game autograph session during that season's Alumni Weekend.  For whatever reason, the planned autograph event was significantly curtailed with only Eric Bruntlett and Pedro Feliz stationed at one sole table for fans.  These 2008 alumni cards remain generally unreleased to the public, with the exception of one copy of each card made available in the 2020 Phantastic Auction along with cards for Joe Blanton, Kyle Kendrick, Jamie Moyer and Brett Myers which were all made available during the 2019 Alumni Weekend.

I've hopefully captured the vast majority, if not all, of these cards produced and issued by the Phillies between 2010 and 2019.

2022 Update:  New photo cards for Bobby Abreu, Greg Gross, Dick Ruthven and Kevin Saucier were made available prior to the game on Sunday, August 7th as part of the annual Phillies Alumni Weekend.  I'm going to keep these four new cards separate from the list below.

Surprises/Omissions:  I'm aware of 8 additional cards that were not part of the 101 cards auctioned off in September 2020 - Pat Burrell (red pinstripes jersey), Bob Dernier, Denny Doyle, Lee Elia, Gene Garber, Charlie Manuel (red pinstripes jersey), Mike Rogodzinski and a second card for Milt Thompson featuring him as a coach.

The biggest omission here is that no card has ever been produced (that we're aware of) for the greatest Phillies alumnus of all-time - Mike Schmidt.

Variations/Rarities:  There are a few variations to these cards available, all with identical photos to their "regular" counterparts.  A second Rheal Cormier card was issued with a 2017 copyright date and omitting his Minor League Career notes on the back.  There are also cards available for Dave Hollins, Ricky Jordan and Tony Taylor with both 2010 and 2011 copyright dates.  These three cards with 2010 copyrights have glossy backs as opposed to the usual matte backs.

2007 Philadelphia Phillies Photo Cards

Card Size:  4" x 6"
Description:  Full color photos are surrounded by a blue border (for pitchers) or a red border (for everyone else) with the player's name featured prominently in blue or red at the top of each card.  The Citizens Bank Park logo can be found in one of the four corners on the fronts.  Ryan Howard's card, from the first version of this set, contains a gold badge commemorating his 2006 N.L. MVP win.  An updated set was issued after the All-Star break containing a second version of Howard's card omitting the gold badge.  The horizontal card backs feature biographical information and complete career statistics.

How Distributed:  The original 36-card set was available for sale at Citizens Bank Park throughout the first half of the season.  Early in the second half of the season, 7 new cards were added to the set with 6 cards removed.  I'll take a closer look at the additions and subtractions below.

Phillie Phanatic (1):  This is one of the strangest Phanatic cards from all the team issued sets.  The card is horizontal and someone played picture putty with the fans in the background of the photo to create a multi-colored psychedelic design.
Broadcasters (1):  Scott Graham got the boot and was replaced by Gary Matthews in the booth.  Sarge is joined on this card by Harry Kalas, Scott Franzke, Larry Andersen and Chris Wheeler.

Here's the rationale for the six cards removed from the second version of the set available for sale at some point early in the second half of the season:

Karim Garcia - Released by the Phillies on March 28th, prior to opening day.

Matt Smith - Sent down to Ottawa on April 26th and had Tommy John surgery on July 3rd.

Fabio Castro - Spent most of the summer in Triple-A Ottawa, spending three weeks with the club between late April and mid-May.

Freddy Garcia - Went on the disabled list on June 9th, not to return.

Ryan Howard (MVP Logo) - For reasons we'll never know, the Phillies replaced the Howard card with an MVP logo with a logo-less version for the second edition of the set.

Jon Lieber - Went on the disabled list on June 23rd, not to return.

And the seven cards added to the second version of the set:

Michael Bourn - Made the club's opening day roster.

Francisco Rosario - Recalled on April 9th, but was on the disabled list from mid-June through the end of August.

Mike Zagurski - Had two different stints with the club, first getting recalled on May 25th.

Jose Mesa - Rejoined the Phillies on June 9th after being released by the Tigers.

Kyle Kendrick - Called up on June 13th from Ottawa and never went back down.

J.C. Romero - Joined the team on June 29th after being claimed off waivers from the Red Sox.

Surprises/Omissions:  The inclusion of a Karim Garcia is somewhat of a surprise, and the checklist's creator swung and missed on predicting the team's opening day roster.  Bourn, and three relievers who made the club out of spring training were completely overlooked - Clay Condrey, Zack Segovia and Joe Bisenius.

The annual ALS Phestival was held on May 21st this season.  Looking at the Phillies' active roster at the time of the Phestival, only Condrey and reliever Yoel Hernandez were without photo cards.

The second version of the set couldn't have been released prior to early July, as Romero was added to the roster on June 29th.  Looking at the team's roster for their first home game following the All-Star Break on July 13th, pitchers Brian Sanches, J.D. Durbin and Anderson Garcia were all active and in the bullpen but not included in the updated second version of the set.

Variations/Rarities:  As I learned after publishing my original post on this set back in December 2014, Steve let me know there were cards made in the style of this set for Geoff Jenkins and Brad Lidge, both added in the 2007-2008 offseason.  The Lidge card I have in my collection has a completely blank back.  Rick added there are cards with facsimile autographs for four of the team's stars:

1970 Philadelphia Phillies Photo Cards

Number of Cards:  40
Card Size:  3 1/4" x 5 1/2"
Description:  As was the case with all Phillies photo cards issued throughout the 1970s, these cards feature a black and white photo with the players' name below.  Unlike the rest of the Phillies photo cards issued throughout the 1970s, the players' position is also included.  The backs of the cards are blank and there's no indication on the cards themselves that they're from 1970. 

How Distributed:  The cards were handed out to fans individually and supplied to the players in order to reply to fan mail or honor autograph requests.  I could be wrong, but I don't believe the cards were ever available in complete set form.

Surprises:  Two versions of the Doc Edwards card is kind of odd.  The Phillies could have issued a third variation with "catcher" listed as Edwards' position as he was activated on June 6th to help carry the catching load after a rash of injuries at the position.  Edwards hadn't caught in the Majors since 1965 but he got into 35 games with the 1970 Phillies, amazingly making 23 starts!

Omissions:  I'm also surprised by the fact the Phillies had 38 players suit up in 1970 and 34 of them are in this set.  The club can't be blamed for omitting the final four, as they were all short-timers that season.  Catcher Del Bates appeared in 22 games between May 6th and June 5th and reliever Mike Jackson pitched in five games between May 10th and May 24th.  The Phillies would have had to scramble to produce and distribute cards of those two players during the short time they were both active.  If I ever get around to producing my Phillies Missing Links custom cards from the 1970s, Bates and Jackson will be the first two cards in the set as neither ever appeared on a Phillies baseball card.

The other two players omitted were two prospects who would both go on to have much more time in Phillies uniforms.  Outfielder Willie Montanez and infielder John Vukovich were both September call-ups and cards weren't produced for them.

Variations/Rarities:  There are two versions of the Edwards card - one featuring him with a hat, and another featuring him without a hat.  I'm not sure which is more prevalent than the other, so I've listed them both above as part of the main checklist.

Also See:  According to entries found at The Trading Card Database and Beckett.com, there was also a 12-card "Picture Pack" set issued in 1970 containing cards measuring 4 1/4" x 7".  And again per The Trading Card Database, a 26-card set containing 8" x 10" black and white cards featuring a portrait and a posed photo of each player was also released.

2004 Philadelphia Phillies Photo Cards

Number of Cards:  37
Card Size:  4" x 6"
Description:  The 2003 team-issued set contained elements celebrating the final season of Veterans Stadium, so it's only fitting the 2004 team-issued set contains the Inaugural Season logo for Citizens Bank Park.  The card fronts feature a white border, full color photos and the player's name, position and uniform number in a simple, clean and bright design.  The card backs go horizontal for the first time and feature biographical information and complete career statistics.

How Distributed:  The set was available for sale at Citizens Bank Park throughout the season.  Similar to the 2003 set, collectors had to wait a few series into the start of the regular season until the cards were available for sale, which explains the potentially short-printed card celebrating the back-to-back-to-back home runs hit by Bobby Abreu, Jim Thome and Pat Burrell on May 18, 2004.  All cards feature photos from the first few games to be played at the new ballpark, including the on-deck exhibition series against the Indians prior to the start of the regular season.

The Abreu/Thome/Burrell card was numbered to 3,000, the first and last time the Phillies would include a numbered card in these sets, and I'm not sure if this card was available in every set sold during the season.

Commemorative Cards (1):  My "short-printed" version of the back to back to back home runs card is number 322 out of 3,000.

This set contains the first team issued card for Utley and the last team issued card for long-time player and coach Vukovich.  Due to my limited resources and skills when developing the first Chachi cards in 2005, a lot of the photos used for this set are duplicated within the initial 2005 Chachi set.

Surprises:  This is a great checklist to mark the first Phillies team to take the field during Citizens Bank Park's inaugural season.  The entire 25-man opening day roster is represented, plus Chase Utley, who was recalled on May 8th.

Omissions:  Assuming the set was issued in late May, accounting for the inclusion of Utley and the Back to Back to Back card, there are a few other Phillies relievers who could have been included in the set.  On the day of the back to back to back home runs, relievers Brian Powell and Jim Crowell were both on the active roster.  Geoff Geary was recalled the day after the feat, on May 19th.  Promotions for Josh Hancock (May 22nd) and Elizardo Ramirez (May 23rd) would follow shortly thereafter.

Variations/Rarities:  Fellow collector Rick has made me aware of several somewhat rare cards in the style of this set.  First, four of the stars of the team received versions of their cards containing white facsimile autographs.  Somewhat randomly, and one of my personal white whales, reserve outfielder Lou Collier received a card at some point during the summer.  Collier was recalled on August 5th and remained with the club through the rest of the season.  August 5th would have been too late (I think) for the annual ALS Phillies Phestival, so the existence of this card puzzles me.

Finally, the Phillies hired Charlie Manuel to become their 51st manager on November 4, 2004.  A blank-backed card was created so the new skipper would have something to sign during his offseason winter caravan appearances.
