Game 36 - David Montgomery (1946-2019)

2019 Chachi #41
Phillies 5Cardinals 0
Game 36 - Wednesday Afternoon, May 8th in St. Louis
Record - 21-15, 1st place, 2 1/2 games ahead of the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  Jerad Eickhoff mowed down the Cardinals, pitching eight shutout innings in this 5-0 win.

What It Means:  The Phillies won another series and after a Thursday off day, they'll open up a weekend series against the Royals in Kansas City.

What Happened:  Eickhoff was fantastic, throwing 106 pitches and allowing only three hits.  Cesar Hernandez had a big day at the plate, collecting three hits and three RBIs, raising his average to .305 in the process.

Featured Card:  On Wednesday morning, the Phillies made the sad announcement that long-time executive David Montgomery had passed away after a courageous battle with cancer.  Montgomery had worked for the Phillies since 1971 and I can't remember ever reading or hearing a bad thing said about him.  The Phillies, the city of Philadelphia, and Major League Baseball lost a great man.

The Phillies paid tribute to him with this remembrance, and there's a great article by Jayson Stark from The Athletic celebrating Montgomery's legacy.

Thanks for the link to the Jayson Stark article. That was really a great tribute. Monty really was a great man.
