1983 Topps Phillies - More Missing Links

Here are a few more Phillies cards that never were from the 1983 Topps set.

1983 Topps #PR4 Tim Corcoran

Tim Corcoran was released by the Minnesota Twins in late March 1983, and the Phillies picked him up a few weeks later. He'd play in over 100 games for the Phillies in 1984 and 1985, but in 1983, he appeared in only 3 games towards the tail-end of the season as a late inning replacement for either Tony Perez or Pete Rose. Corcoran had to wait until 1985 to appear in a major card release with the Phillies. I made this card using his picture from the Phillies' 1984 Yearbook (big picture) and I borrowed the picture from the 1984 Tastykake team set (little picture).

1983 Topps #PR8 Charles Hudson

Charles Hudson had rookie cards in all three major 1984 releases - Topps, Fleer and Donruss - but he should have been featured in the 1983 Topps Traded series. He made his Major League debut on May 31, 1983 and he started 26 games for the NL Champs, compiling a record of 8-8 with a 3.35 ERA. I distinctly remember listening to Hudson's near-no-hitter on the radio back on July 20, 1983, against the Houston Astros. Hudson took a no-hitter into the 9th inning before allowing a one-out single to Craig Reynolds. His focus completely blown, Hudson then allowed back-t0-back home runs to Denny Walling and Dickie Thon before finally recording the final out and finishing with a complete game 3-hitter.

He also started NLCS Game 3 against the Dodgers, picking up a complete game win. Unfortunately, his two starts against the Orioles in the World Series didn't go so well, as he didn't make it past the 5th inning in either of those starts. I used the same sources ('84 Phillies Yearbook and '84 Phillies Tastykake set) for the Hudson card as I used for the Corcoran card.

I recall Tim's easy swinging bat and the year he hit over .340 for the Phils. Both Tim and Greg Gross were given much more playing time at that point and it was disappointing to see Tim just fade out.
