One Sentence Summary:  Seranthony Dominguez proved he was human, allowing a solo home run to Matt Carpenter in the 9th, sending the Cardinals to a 7-6 win.

What It Means:  Dominguez should have had some cushion, but Tommy Hunter allowed two inherited runners to score along with two runs of his own in the four-run Cardinals 7th inning.  Hunter has allowed at least one run in 8 of his last 22 appearances, owning a 5.50 ERA during that time.  (Per Tweet from Ryan Lawrence.)

What Happened:  With the Cardinals up 6-4 in the 8th, Rhys Hoskins hit a two-run double to tie up the ballgame.  The Carpenter home run in the 9th untied it.

Odubel Herrera (11) and Carlos Santana (11) had homered earlier.  Vince Velasquez struck out 8 and was tagged for four runs in his 6 1/3 innings of work.

Featured Card:  In the 4th inning, J.P. Crawford was hit on his left hand with a 98mph fastball from Luke Weaver and it was announced after the game that Crawford's hand was broken.  This is obviously a tough break (no pun intended) for the rookie infielder, and his rough season continues.

Record - 38-32, Tied for 2nd place, 3 1/2 games behind the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  Nick Pivetta struck out 13, but the Phillies needed a two-out, two-run walk-off double in the 10th from Aaron Altherr to seal this 6-5 win over the Cardinals.

What It Means:  The Phils have crept back into a tie for second place with the Nationals.

What Happened:  Pivetta was gifted a 4-run lead in the 1st inning on an Odubel Herrera 3-run home run (10) and Andrew Knapp's RBI single.  He departed after 7 1/3 innings having allowed two runs on just four hits and with his team holding a 4-2 lead.

Victor Arano was called on in the 9th to secure the save, and he blew it.  He struck out Yairo Munoz to seemingly end the game, but his wild pitch allowed Munoz to reach and Yadier Molina to score to make it a 4-3 ballgame.  Adam Morgan relieved Arano and allowed a single to Kolten Wong to tie the score.  In the 10th, Jake Thompson allowed a home run to Tommy Pham to start the inning.

Featured Card:  Trailing 5-4 in the 10th, Rhys Hoskins singled and the Cardinals opted to intentionally walk Carlos Santana.  Altherr made them pay with a double to left (misplayed by Marcell Ozuna) and the Phils had themselves a dramatic 6-5 win.  Altherr was only in the game as Nick Williams had been hit square in the nose with a ball caroming off the outfield wall, causing him to exit the game.

Transaction:  Prior to the game, the Phillies made the somewhat surprising move of optioning one-time closer Hector Neris to Lehigh Valley.  Neris is 1-3 with a 6.00 ERA so far this season and his June ERA is 9.45.

Lefty reliever Austin Davis had his contract selected to take Neris' place in the bullpen.  A 2014 12th round draft pick, Davis has baseball card appearances in four Phillies minor league team sets to date.

First Mention on The Phillies Room:  December 19, 2014 - Jimmy Rollins Topps Gallery . . . There has been a deal.  After much consternation and hand-wringing, the Phillies have officially traded long-time shortstop Jimmy Rollins to the Los Angeles Dodgers for pitching prospects Zach Eflin and Tom Windle.  The deal had to wait until the Dodgers completed their Matt Kemp trade with the Padres, in which one of the players received from San Diego was Eflin.

I'm still processing all of this, and trying to figure out exactly how I want to pay tribute to Rollins and his time in Philadelphia.

Back in the 1980s, when the Phillies were paying tribute to a retired star, they'd issue a poster or a print of that star framed by his Topps baseball cards throughout his career.  They did this for Tug McGraw, Mike Schmidt and Richie Ashburn.  I'd like to see them do something similar for Rollins when the day comes for him to announce his retirement.  In the meantime, here's a gallery of Rollins' base Topps cards as my small tribute to the franchise's all-time hits leader and the greatest shortstop in team history.

One Sentence Summary:  Maikel Franco had a 4-RBI day and the Phillies barely managed to hang on to this 10-9 win over the Brewers.

What It Means:  Hector Neris entered the 9th with a 10-5 lead and exited after allowing four runs on four hits.  As I'm writing this on Monday late afternoon, we now know that Neris' latest melt-down resulted in the one-time closer getting sent to Lehigh Valley.

What Happened:  In just his second start since June 6th, Franco went 2 for 3 with a home run (9), walk and four RBIs.  Rhys Hoskins (10) and Odubel Herrera (9) also homered for the Phillies, who had 12 hits and went 3 for 9 with runners in scoring position.

Aaron Nola struggled, allowing 4 runs in 4 1/3 innings.  After Neris' departure, Jake Thompson threw one pitch to record the final out and notch his second save.

Brewers reliever Adrian Houser vomited twice (!) on the mound in the 7th inning, but no Topps Now card appears to be imminent for his performance.

Featured Card:  Sadly, Franco baseball card appearances are few and far between these days at The Phillies Room.

One Sentence Summary:  The Phils hung on to win this game, 4-1, despite a lack of clutch hitting.

What It Means:  They'll go for the series win on Father's Day and then come home to open a 3-game set against the Cardinals.

What Happened:  Zach Eflin threw five strong innings, but was pulled in favor of a pinch-hitter in the 6th.  The move paid off when pinch-hitter Maikel Franco was intentionally walked to load the bases and then J.P. Crawford walked to give the Phils a 3-1 lead.  Cesar Hernandez followed that up by beating out an infield single to put the Phillies up 4-1.  Hector Neris was (surprisingly) called upon to pitch the 9th, and shut the Brewers down in order to record his 10th save.

The offense drew 10 walks but left 15 runners on base, including bases loaded strandings in the 6th, 7th and 8th innings.

Featured Card:  The Phillies first got on the board with an absolute moonshot home run (9) from Rhys Hoskins in the 4th, followed by another solo home run from Andrew Knapp (1) in the 5th.  I'm giving Knapp the card here as the now back-up catcher has struggled at the plate this season and his average went up to .183 following this game.

Transactions:  The bullpen shuffled its ranks before this game with Luis Garcia landing on the 10-day disabled list with a wrist injury and Mark Leiter, Jr. heading back down to Lehigh Valley.  Yacksel Rios and Jake Thompson were summoned to take their places.

First Mention on The Phillies Room:  September 13, 2017 - On the off day Monday, the Phillies claimed lefty reliever Zac Curtis off waivers from the Mariners and placed Jesen Therrien on the 60-day disabled list. Therrien is likely headed for elbow surgery.  Curtis appeared in 21 games for the Diamondbacks in 2016 and three games for the Mariners this season.  His baseball card appearances have been limited to minor league team sets, Panini issues and one multi-player card in the 2016 Topps Heritage Minor League set.

One Sentence Summary:  Four Phillies errors, including two from Scott Kingery, led to an early exit for Jake Arrieta and a blow-out 13-2 win for the Brewers.

What It Means:  The Phillies haven't been playing well and their defense has been lousy.  Kingery's struggles at shortstop (not his natural position) continued, Rhys Hoskins dropped a fly ball in left field (not his natural position) and J.P. Crawford committed an error at third (not his natural position).

What Happened:  Arrieta lasted just 3 1/3 innings, allowing 8 runs (4 earned) on 7 hits.  Jesmuel Valentin had to come in to pitch the 8th inning.  Cesar Hernandez had a 3-hit night and Odubel Herrera showed signs of life, with a double and a solo home run (8).

Featured Card:  With Valentin making his pitching debut, he joins Pedro Florimon as position players pitching for the Phillies this season.  That last happened in 2013 when Casper Wells and John McDonald both pitched.  The last time three position players pitched was 1945 when Ben Chapman (3 games), Jimmie Foxx (9 games, 2 starts) and Rene Monteagudo (14 games) all pitched.  (Per Todd Zolecki's Tweet.)

The 37-year-old Foxx had a very respectable record of 1-0 with a 1.59 ERA over 22 2/3 innings for the 1945 Phillies.  The future Hall of Famer spent the last of his 20 seasons with an awful Phillies club that would finish the year with a record of 46-108.

What It Means:  The Phils took the series from the Rockies and they'll head to Milwaukee for a quick weekend get-away with the Brewers before returning home on Monday against the Cardinals.

What Happened:  Vince Velasquez no-hit the Rockies through 6 2/3, allowing a double to Trevor Story on the 105th and final pitch he threw.  Three of the team's 13 hits came from Rhys Hoskins, who hit a solo home run (8) in the 1st inning and ended the day with 3 RBIs.  Nick Williams (8) connected for a solo home run of his own in the 2nd.

Featured Card:  This is Hoskins' first featured card since way back from the May 5th game, as he's just now emerging from a bad slump followed by a disabled list stint for a broken jaw.  He's hitting .353 (6 for 17) with a pair of home runs since his return from the disabled list.

One Sentence Summary:  Jesmuel Valentin was the only bright spot in this forgettable 7-2 loss to the Rockies.

What It Means:  Maybe there were two bright spots . . . Hector Neris pitched a scoreless eighth inning, striking out the side.

What Happened:  Nick Pivetta suffered through his fourth straight subpar start, giving up 6 runs on 8 hits in his 5 innings.  The offense was limited to home runs from Jorge Alfaro (5) and Valentin (1), his first career home run.  Valentin had earlier doubled twice in the ballgame.

Featured Card:  I was going to go with the Luis Garcia card that Doug had signed (see below) but after Valentin homered in the 9th, it tipped the scales in his favor.

Field Report:  We picked the worst game of the series to attend!  Still, the four of us had fun and Doug continued to have pre-game autograph success.  He added additional autographs of coaches Rick Kranitz and Dusty Wathan to his collection along with signatures from Valentin and Garcia.  Valentin seems to be this year's Ty Kelly as he's made time to sign a few autographs at each game we've attended this season.

What Happened:  Nola recorded his 8th win by striking out 10 and allowing a run on 4 hits over 6 2/3 innings.  Luis Garcia had to be pulled in the 9th inning after allowing four straight hits, and Seranthony Dominguez bailed him out to notch his 3rd save.

Featured Card:  Kingery knocked in the fourth run of the game with a sacrifice fly in the 3rd and his 4-RBI day earns him featured card honors.

First Mention on The Phillies Room:  November 18, 2017 - Phils Get Gott . . . The Phillies filled another coaching position on Friday afternoon, adding former pitcher Jim Gott as their new bullpen coach for the 2018 season.  Gott replaces John McLaren, who was let go following the season.

Gott spent the past five season as the Angels' minor league pitching coordinator and he served as the Angels pitching coach from 2010 to 2012.  He enjoyed a 14 year playing career with the Blue Jays (1982-1984), Giants (1985-1987), Pirates (1987-1989, 1995) and Dodgers (1990-1994).  He saved 34 games for the Pirates in 1988, at the time breaking Kent Tekulve's single season save tally for the franchise.

Gott appears in every Topps flagship set between 1983 and 1995.
