1970 Topps #436
1970 Topps Appreciation:  Tomorrow, I'm going to feature a post listing all the cards within the 1970 Topps set with some sort of Phillies connection.  For now, this is the final 1970 Topps Phillies card yet to appear within a series summary post.  The team photo used for this card doesn't match the team photos from the Phillies' 1968, 1969 or 1970 yearbooks.  Which leads me to believe that perhaps this photo was taken especially for Topps?

Thanks for following along all season and thanks especially to Jim from Downingtown, who commented throughout the year on these posts with additional interesting tidbits about the players featured.  I'll be back next season with these series preview posts, looking at the cards with Phillies connections throughout the 1982 Topps set.

Poll Results - How Do You Track Your Collection?

2016 Chachi #72
A little over a month ago, in an effort to seek a viable alternative to Zistle, I asked the question how do you track your baseball card collection?  Only 15 readers/collectors voted, but the results are pretty much what I expected.

There's no denying that Zistle is a powerful card tracking tool, and I sincerely hope they straighten out their legal woes and get back on track.  The "winner" of the poll was the good, old fashioned spreadsheet which has become an increasingly attractive option to me.  With a spreadsheet, or any self-maintained database, the collector is in charge of the input, the data fields and the integrity of the data. With Zistle, I'm reliant on an administrator approving my suggested edits and as I've seen recently those edits could take months or be completely ignored altogether.

Not surprising to me, not one person responded that they use the Beckett database to track his/her collections.

For the short-term, I'm going to stick with Zistle.  For the long-term, I'm going to start laying out a spreadsheet format with the goal of eventually migrating my collection tracking away from a third-party provider.  This is serious stuff.

Thanks to everyone who commented and voted in this little poll!

2016 Phillies Team Issue 2 - Phillies Broadcasters

Braves 12Phillies 2
Game 158 - Wednesday Night, September 28th in Atlanta
Record - 70-88, 4th place, 22 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  In his final start of the season, Adam Morgan was hit hard and the Phillies dropped another laugher, 12-2.

What It Means:  Ryan Howard and A.J. Ellis called a players only meeting following this latest loss, discussing the need to finish strong over the final four games.

What Happened:  Morgan finished the 2016 season with a 2-11 record and a 6.04 ERA.  In five innings, he allowed nine runs on 10 hits.  Phil Klein entered the game in the sixth and by keeping the Braves off the scoreboard for that one inning, he became the first Phillies reliever in 11 appearances to not allow a run.

Featured Card:  This is as good a time as any for my annual show of appreciation towards the Phillies primary radio broadcasters - Scott Franzke and Larry Andersen.  I've mentioned before how my preferred method of enjoying a Phillies game is with the television muted and the radio broadcast synced up to the video.  Franzke and Andersen are a fantastic team and they've made the last few weeks of dreadful Phillies baseball almost bearable.

Franzke and L.A. are flanking former big leaguer Ben Davis on this year's broadcaster card found within the series two team-issued photo card set.

2015 Stadium Club #199 Ryan Howard

Braves 7Phillies 6
Game 157 - Tuesday Night, September 27th in Atlanta
Record - 70-87, 4th place, 22 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  The Braves scored seven unanswered runs against a Phillies bullpen running on fumes at this point.

What It Means:  "In two games now, every reliever I brought in has given up a [bleeping] run," Pete Mackanin said. "That's unheard of."

What Happened:  Luis Garcia allowed the biggest blow, surrendering a three-run home run to Tyler Flowers in the sixth inning, pulling the Braves to within a run at 6-5.  Joely Rodriguez and David Hernandez were on the mound in the eighth when the Braves took the lead.  Darin Ruf gets an assist in the loss for misplaying a ball in left field that kicked off the Braves rally in the eighth.

The game also saw two lengthy rain delays and the possible end of the season for Roman Quinn, who left the game with an oblique injury.

Featured Card:  Playing in his final week with the Phillies, Ryan Howard hit a first inning grand slam, the 15th of his career.  I'm going to miss watching that home run swing.

1999 Multi-Ad Reading Phillies #9 Cliff Politte

Mets 17Phillies 0
Game 156 - Sunday Afternoon, September 25th in Flushing
Record - 70-86, 4th place, 21 1/2 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  The Mets delivered a good, old-fashioned butt whoopin' to the hapless Phillies, demolishing the club by a score of 17-0.

What It Means:  This was a surreal, sad and happy day as Doug and I attended a fantastic baseball card show right after learning about the tragic passing of Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez.  Having received an alert on my phone with the news, Doug could immediately tell that something was wrong as I read the notification from MLB.  We talked about how sad it was for his family, for the Marlins and for baseball.

What Happened:  The following Tweets sum up this game best.  From Matt Breen, this was the worst Phillies loss since a 22-3 defeat to the Reds on September 4, 1999.  From Todd Zolecki, the Phillies bullpen finished the Mets series with a 14.29 ERA.  From Larry Shenk, this was the biggest shutout against the Phillies since the Providence Grays won 28-0 on August 31, 1883.

Featured Card:  The pitchers in that 22-3 loss back in 1999 were Paul Byrd, Billy Brewer, Cliff Politte, Chad Ogea, Amaury Telemaco and Steve Schrenk.

2016 Topps Archives #94 Darin Ruf

Phillies 10Mets 8
Game 155 - Saturday Night, September 24th in Flushing
Record - 70-85, 4th place, 20 1/2 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  Despite the bullpen's best efforts to blow it, the Phillies won 10-8 after jumping to a 10-0 lead through the first four innings.

What It Means:  This would be the only game the team would salvage from an otherwise completely ugly series with the Mets.

What Happened:  The big blows from the Phillies were two, three-run home runs from Maikel Franco (25) in the first inning and Darin Ruf (2) in the fourth inning.  Alec Asher contributed a two-run single and earned his second win of the season.  The suddenly hot Odubel Herrera had a three-hit game and scored twice.

Hector Neris recorded his 100th strikeout of the season in the eighth inning, joining relievers Jake Diekman (2014), Al Holland (1983) and Dick Selma (1970) in reaching that plateau.  Michael Mariot recorded his second save.

Featured Card:  Ruf's days as a member of the Phillies could be coming to a close, as he's a potential non-tender candidate once the season concludes.  I had read somewhere that the slugger could be headed to Japan for the 2017 season.

1970 Topps #252
1970 Topps #546
1970 Topps Appreciation:  As far as I know, Lowell Palmer has no connection to the Braves, but I wanted to save one of the coolest Phillies cards from the early 1970s for last.  There's one more series preview post coming up for the weekend series with the Mets, and I'll feature the final 1970 Topps Phillies card of the season in that post.

Palmer started his five-year career with the Phillies, appearing in 67 games mostly as a reliever between 1969 and 1971.  In 207 innings, Palmer compiled a 5.39 ERA and a record of 3-10.  Over the next three seasons between 1972 and 1974, he'd wrap up his career with brief appearances with the Cardinals, Indians and Padres.

A member of the 1980 World Championship club, I had this to say about Ron Reed back in a series preview post from 2013, although he's now been dropped to seventh place on the team's all-time saves list:
Reed spent the first 10 years of his career with the Braves (1966-1975) before he was shipped to the Cardinals early in the 1975 season.  Used as a starting pitcher for the Braves and Cardinals, the Phillies converted Reed to a reliever and he enjoyed a successful eight year run (1976-1983) with the club.  His 90 saves with the Phillies place him sixth on the team's all-time saves list.

Valley Forge Autographs! - 5 for 1, Skates, Sarge & Inky

1986 Tastykake Phillies #9
1982 Fleer #259
1982 Donruss #441
1993 Medford Phillies #22
We attended the Valley Forge baseball card show on Sunday and a full summary of our haul can be found in this post from yesterday.  While we weren't tracking down cool Phillies cards for Doug's collection or "old and weird" Phillies cards for his Dad's collection, we were standing in line to obtain autographs from former Phillies players.  At first, I was going to only get a Von Hayes autograph, but the relatively low price per autograph ($10) convinced me to stand in line to meet the other former Phillies as well.  All four were very gracious with their time and they seemed happy to be there. They each shook Doug's hand and Sarge (Gary Matthews) pointed out that he particularly liked Doug's haircut and glasses.

Honestly while it's nice to have these autographs, the biggest thrill for Doug is just getting to meet these former players.  He asked me about each of their careers and who they played with and why they were "good" players.  We talked about how when I was a kid, my Dad would take me to baseball card shows where I'd meet Art Mahaffey or Del Ennis or Don Larsen and then my Dad would tell me all about these guys I had never heard of before.  We then talked about him taking his kids to baseball card shows in the future where the signers would be Aaron Nola and Cameron Rupp and Cody Asche.  I can't wait to go with him to those future shows.

Just when I thought I was finished with very limited edition 2016 Chachi inserts, I decided to make one more four-card set to commemorate our day.

Baseball Card Show Report - Valley Forge 4

1941 Play Ball #9
1957 Topps #174
1958 Hire's Root Beer #43
1959 Topps #338
On Sunday, Doug and I attended the Philadelphia Sportscard & Memorabilia Show in Valley Forge. Doug had actually saved Christmas money for this show and he's spent the last few weeks preparing his checklists.  We had a fantastic day, and I'm OK with the fact that Doug came away with way more cards than I did.  I'm always grateful to those dealers that give Doug some extra attention, especially when they realize that this kid is truly a collector and not just looking for the big hits.

There were four former Phillies signing autographs on Sunday, and Doug admittedly had never heard of any of them.  That being said, we still decided to buy four autograph tickets so that he could at least meet them and add to a growing autograph collection.  I'll have a separate post coming up to show off our new autographs.

Doug was very happy going through the bargain bins and he added a small stack of vintage (1970s is vintage to him) Hall of Famer cards to his collection.  He also came away with a bunch of newer Phillies cards and some more Mike Trout cards for his growing player collection.  He's within a few cards now of completing his 2016 Topps Opening Day set, and he needs just one more card (Johnny Bench) for a complete 2016 Topps Bunt set.  Not to leave out his brother Ben, Doug hunted down an autographed Ben Revere card and a signed 8 x 10 photo of Revere for his brother's collection.

Stand-Ups
1949 Philadelphia Bulletin Phillies
While we weren't adding cards to Doug's collection, I managed to add a bunch of cool cards to my collection as well.  The "newest" card I brought home was from 1971:
  • I wanted to add at least one of the four following big stars to my 1971 Topps set:  Ernie Banks, Willie Mays, Bench or Roberto Clemente.  I came away with both the Banks and Bench cards along with several other semi-stars and a few high numbers.  I'm slowly making progress on this set and once it's completed I'll be the proud owner of a complete run of Topps sets from 1970 through 2015.
  • I picked up a nice assortment of Phillies cards from the 1950s and 1960s, with the highlight being the addition of Sparky Anderson's rookie card from the 1959 Topps set.
  • I found a gorgeous (and cheap!) Pinky May card from the 1941 Play Ball set.
  • I found a few oddball Dick Sisler items from newspaper sets from the late 1940s.
  • Finally, I added two 1911 T205 Gold Border Phillies cards to my collection, and I'll show these off in a future post.
It was truly a fantastic day and we're already making plans for our next big baseball card show outing!

2016 Topps #488 Colton Murray

Mets 10Phillies 5
Game 154 - Friday Night, September 23rd in Flushing
Record - 69-85, 4th place, 20 1/2 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  Jeremy Hellickson and the Phillies bullpen were hit hard in this 10-5 loss to the Mets.

What It Means:  Manager Pete Mackanin summed up this game nicely with this opening quote during his post-game press conference, "Well, that was a shame."

What Happened:  After pitching one of the best games of his career in his last outing, Hellickson couldn't escape the fifth inning in this game.  His final line wasn't pretty - 4 1/3 innings, 6 runs on 7 hits and 3 walks.  Maikel Franco (24) homered for the second time in two nights and Darin Ruf added his first home run of the season.

Featured Card:  Making his first appearance in over a week, Colton Murray was one of a string of Phillies relievers who allowed the Mets to tack on runs in this ballgame.  However, he's the only one of the bunch with a 2016 Topps card, and I imagine it will stay that way.  I haven't seen a checklist for the 2016 Topps Update set yet, but I would be extremely surprised if Frank Herrmann, Patrick Schuster or Severino Gonzalez made the list.

As discussed in this post, I'm taking a poll on how collectors track baseball card collections.

Please vote in the poll on the sidebar if you haven't already.  Thanks!

2016 Topps Bunt #109 Maikel Franco

Mets 9Phillies 8 (11)
Game 153 - Thursday Night, September 22th in Flushing
Record - 69-84, 4th place, 20 1/2 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies bullpen couldn't hold two, two-run leads in the 8th and 11th innings and the Mets used home runs to seal their dramatic 9-8 win.

What It Means:  The Phillies have lost 84 games to this point in the season, but this was by far the worst of the bunch.

What Happened:  Up 6-4 in the ninth, Jeanmar Gomez served up a two-run home run to Jose Reyes to send the game into extra innings.  Up 8-6 in the 11th, Edubray Ramos allowed a three-run home run to Asdrubal Cabrera to give the Mets the win.  In his last 17 appearances, Gomez has an 11.20 ERA (17 runs in 13 2/3 innings).  After a solid (and surprising) run as the team's closer this season, he may have saved his final game for the club.

Featured Card:  Ryan Howard (23), Cameron Rupp (16) and Maikel Franco (23) all homered in this game.  Franco's was the biggest blast, as it was his three-run shot in the eighth that gave the Phillies a temporary 6-4 lead.  Franco has struggled mightily in the second half, and this was only his fifth home run since the All-Star break.  In that span, he's hit .223 with only 9 doubles.

As discussed in this post, I'm taking a poll on how collectors track baseball card collections.

1970 Topps #302
1970 Topps #634
1970 Topps Appreciation:  Jeff James has no connection to the Mets, but he's one of the few remaining Phillies cards from the 1970 Topps set I've yet to feature this season in these series preview posts.  In 35 games with the Phillies in 1968 and 1969, James went 6-6 with a 4.52 ERA over 147 1/3 innings pitched.  He was included within both the 1969 and 1970 Topps sets.

I wrote about Bud Harrelson's career and Phillies tenure in a series preview post from 2012:
In March 1978, the Phillies acquired Bud Harrelson from the Mets for Fred Andrews and cash.  Harrelson had spent the first 13 years of his career with the Mets and reunited with his former teammate and friend Tug McGraw, he hit .214 in 71 games with the '78 Phils.
Harrelson retired following the season, but an injury to Larry Bowa, early in the 1979 season, convinced Harrelson to un-retire and come back to the Phillies.  (He became a teammate of former brawl-mate Pete Rose on the 1979 Phillies - see here and here.)  He hit .282 in 53 games in 1979, but was released at the end of spring training in 1980.  He played in 87 games for the 1980 Texas Rangers before calling it a career.

2016 Phillies Team Issue 2 Update #19 Tommy Joseph

Phillies 8White Sox 3
Game 152 - Wednesday Night, September 21st in Philadelphia
Record - 69-83, 4th place, 20 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies stunned Chris Sale and the White Sox with an offensive barrage and an 8-3 win.

What It Means:  This was very unexpected.  Sale had his worst outing of the season, allowing six runs on seven hits in just four innings of work.

What Happened:  Tommy Joseph went 2 for 5 with three RBIs, including a two-run home run (21) off Sale in the first inning.  Maikel Franco and Cameron Rupp also drove in a pair of runs a piece. Jared Eickhoff won his 11th game, limiting the White Sox to three runs - all on solo home runs.

Featured Card:  Joseph is now one home run behind Ryan Howard and Franco (22) for the team lead.

Field Report:  I attended this game as part of a work function, so that does that even really count?

As discussed in this post, I'm taking a poll on how collectors track baseball card collections.

Game 151 - Tuesday Night, September 20th in Philadelphia
Record - 68-83, 4th place, 20 games behind the Nationals

2016 Phillies Team
Issue 2 #12
One Sentence Summary:  Odubel Herrera paced the offense with a three-hit night as the Phils hung on to beat the White Sox, 7-6.

What It Means:  Herrera had been in a prolonged slump, so it's nice to see him get hot for the final weeks of the season.  I attribute his three hits in this game to my son yelling at him in the dugout before the game, getting Herrera's attention, flashing the bull horns at him and having Herrera return to bull horns right back.

What Happened:  Herrera hit a two-run home run (15) in the first inning and added an RBI single in the fifth.  Roman Quinn and Tommy Joseph also had a pair of hits with Quinn knocking in a pair of runs.  Michael Mariot recorded his first career save after Jeanmar Gomez allowed three runs in the ninth and had to be removed.

Featured Cards/Field Report:  Doug and I attended this game together, with Doug immediately heading down to the Phillies dugout 90 minutes before first pitch to claim his spot for autograph seeking.  His patience paid off as several players and a few coaches came over to him to sign his cards.  Jared Eickhoff was a repeat signer for Doug, and Freddy Galvis was a pleasant surprise as he signed right before the start of the National Anthem.  Coaches Mickey Morandini and Dusty Wathan also signed with Wathan adding his autograph to the Phillies team card from the 2016 Topps set. Spending the most time signing was probably Darin Ruf, who was very gracious with his time.

2016 Topps Phillies #PP-17
Barring any roster moves in the next two weeks, which would be highly unlikely, I believe the listing below represents the final look at Phillies transactions made both prior to the start of the season and during the season.  This is quite a list, and I suspect the list of 2016-2017 Phillies transactions will be just as long if not longer.
