1999 Multi-Ad Reading Phillies #9 Cliff Politte

Mets 17Phillies 0
Game 156 - Sunday Afternoon, September 25th in Flushing
Record - 70-86, 4th place, 21 1/2 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  The Mets delivered a good, old-fashioned butt whoopin' to the hapless Phillies, demolishing the club by a score of 17-0.

What It Means:  This was a surreal, sad and happy day as Doug and I attended a fantastic baseball card show right after learning about the tragic passing of Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez.  Having received an alert on my phone with the news, Doug could immediately tell that something was wrong as I read the notification from MLB.  We talked about how sad it was for his family, for the Marlins and for baseball.

What Happened:  The following Tweets sum up this game best.  From Matt Breen, this was the worst Phillies loss since a 22-3 defeat to the Reds on September 4, 1999.  From Todd Zolecki, the Phillies bullpen finished the Mets series with a 14.29 ERA.  From Larry Shenk, this was the biggest shutout against the Phillies since the Providence Grays won 28-0 on August 31, 1883.

Featured Card:  The pitchers in that 22-3 loss back in 1999 were Paul Byrd, Billy Brewer, Cliff Politte, Chad Ogea, Amaury Telemaco and Steve Schrenk.

  1. For what it's worth, I heard that this was also the Mets' biggest shutout win. I know you're happy to hear that.
