Realmuto Earns First Gold Glove

2019 Chachi #70
On Sunday night, J.T. Realmuto was named the Gold Glove award winner for N.L. catchers, edging out Yadier Molina and Austin Hedges.  Aaron Nola and Bryce Harper were also finalists for Gold Gloves, but they finished behind Zack Greinke and Cody Bellinger, respectively.  Realmuto became the third catcher in franchise history to win the award, following Mike Lieberthal in 1999 and Bob Boone in 1978 and 1979.  No Phillies player had won the award since Jimmy Rollins at shortstop back in 2012.

All that remains now for the All-Star catcher on his offseason to-do list is to sign a long-term contract extension with the Phils.

Phillies Missing Links of the 2000s - #24 Kane Davis

#48
Kane Thomas Davis
Relief Pitcher

On August 31, 2007, the Phillies found themselves just two games behind the Mets in the division and they needed a fresh arm for the bullpen.  Geoff Geary was sent down to the Triple-A Ottawa Lynx and Kane Davis took his place in the bullpen.  Since the 2000 season, Davis had pitched in parts of four seasons with the Indians, Brewers, Rockies and Mets, hitting a career high with 57 appearances for the 2001 Rockies.  With the Lynx, Davis had been a reliable reliever, making 41 appearances and tallying an impressive 3.06 ERA in 53 innings pitched.

He appeared in 11 games down the stretch for the Phillies, allowing runs in 4 of those 11 appearances pitching mostly in middle relief.  Left off the postseason roster, Davis was one of the first members of the 2007 club to depart, being granted free agency on October 19th.  He spend the next few seasons in the Blue Jays' minor league system, pitching in Korea and making a few stops in the independent Atlantic League.

Debut:  August 31, 2007 - Relieved Kyle Kendrick and pitched the final two innings in a 9-2 win over the Marlins in Miami.  Struck out Dan Uggla to end the 8th.

Phillies Missing Links of the 2000s - #23 John Ennis

#46
John Wayne Ennis
Relief/Starting Pitcher

The Phillies signed right-handed pitcher John Ennis in November 2006 and invited him to spring training the following February.  In need of a fresh bullpen arm in late August, the surprising Phillies recalled Ennis from the Triple-A Ottawa Lynx, where he had served well as both a relief and starting pitcher.  He made his Phillies debut on August 26th, pitching the final 3 innings of a 14-2 blow-out win against the Padres, earning a save in the process.  Two days later he was designated for assignment to make run for Adam Eaton who was returning from the disabled list.

Ennis passed through waivers, made one more appearance with the Lynx and was recalled following the September 1st roster expansion.  He'd appear in two more games for the Phillies that September, starting the September 8th contest against the Marlins, tossing four innings and allowing a home run.  Ennis returned as a spring training non-roster invitee in 2008, but those two games the prior September were to be his last in the majors.  After a brief stop in Korea, he came back to the Phillies and pitched for Lehigh Valley in 2009 and 2010 (1 game each year) and Reading in 2010 (18 games).

Bats:  Right  Throws:  Right  Height:  6'5"  Weight:  220

Professional Affiliations:  Atlanta Braves 1998-2003; Detroit Tigers 2003-2006; Phillies 2007-2008, 2009-2010; Samsung Lions (Korea) 2008

Phillies Career
3 games, 1 start, 0-0, 8.22 ERA over 7 2/3 innings, 12 hits, 3 walks, 8 strikeouts
Acquired:  November 10, 2006 - Signed as a minor league free agent formerly with the Detroit Tigers.
Debut:  August 26, 2007 - Relieved Kyle Kendrick and picked up a save with three innings of relief in a 14-2 win over the Padres.
Final Game:  Setpember 12, 2007 - Again relieved Kendrick, this time in a game the Rockies would eventually win 12-0.  Allowed 5 runs on 2 hits and 3 walks in 2/3 of an inning.
Departed:  August 6, 2008 - Released and signed with the Samsung Lions in Korea.

Phillies Missing Links of the 2000s - #21 Anderson Garcia

#61
Anderson Garcia
Relief Pitcher

For a two week period in July 2007, Anderson Garcia was on the Phillies roster.  That was long enough for him to appear in one game on July 7th, pitching 2/3 of an inning, and to take part in the team's annual Photo Day promotion on July 14th.  Following that July 14th game, Garcia was optioned back down to the Triple-A Ottawa Lynx, never to return to the big leagues.  As photos of Garcia in a Phillies uniform were scarce back in 2007, I used the picture I took on that Photo Day for his 2007 Chachi card published here for the first time.

Signed as an amateur free agent in April 2001 by the Yankees, Garcia pitched professionally for 8 seasons within the Yankees, Mets, Orioles, Phillies and Mariners organizations.

Bats:  Right  Throws:  Right  Height:  6'2"  Weight:  180
Born:  March 23, 1981, Santo Domingo, DR
Signed:  Signed by the New York Yankees as an amateur free agent, April 25, 2001

Phillies Career
1 game, 2/3 inning, 2 hits, 1 run allowed, 13.50 ERA
Acquired:  January 5, 2007 - Selected off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles.
Debut and Final Game:  July 7, 2007 - Relieved Brian Sanches in the 7th inning in Colorado, recording two outs and allowing hits to Todd Helton and Troy Tulowitzki.  J.C. Romero relieved Garcia, surrendering a single that scored Helton.
Departed:  February 16, 2008 - Selected off waivers by the Seattle Mariners.

2016 Chachi #71 Leading Firemen - Gomez, Neris, Mariot

Perhaps the hardest thing to watch during the latter part of the Phillies season was the complete implosion of Jeanmar Gomez as the team's closer.  Unofficially removed from the closer's roll during the final weeks of September, Gomez tallied a 19.13 ERA (17 earned runs in 8 innings) over his final 12 games.  The emergence (and dominance) of Hector Neris as an extremely effective late inning reliever means that he's probably one of the few pitchers guaranteed a spot in the team's 2017 bullpen.

Vince Velasquez and Aaron Nola led the Phillies pitching staff in strikeouts for most of the season, but Jared Eickhoff and Jeremy Hellickson were able to pull ahead late in the season due to Nola's injury and the shut down of Velasquez.

The win is becoming an old school statistic, but it's still impressive to me that Jeremy Hellickson and Jared Eickhoff produced the highest win totals for the Phillies since Cliff Lee's 14 in 2013.  We're taking a step in the right direction here.
