Cal Stevenson was the first post-opening day roster addition, getting the call when Brandon Marsh landed on the injured list on April 20th with a right hamstring strain.  Stevenson was active for 11 games, playing in five and going 2 for 8 with an RBI.  When Marsh was activated on May 3rd, Stevenson was sent back down to the IronPigs.  He was released on August 17th when a 40-man roster spot was needed to activate Aaron Nola from the 60-day IL.  In 23 games with the Phillies over two seasons, Stevenson batted .250 with six doubles and seven RBIs.

Rob Thomson continues to guide the Phillies to the postseason, and 2025 marked the fourth year in a row Topper had managed in the play-offs.  The club's 96-win season was a high-water mark for Thomson during his tenure, and his lifetime record with the Phillies is now 346-251.  His .580 winning percentage is currently tops all time among Phillies managers to have managed 50 or more games.  Thomson switched his uniform number from #59 to #49, in honor of Ron Guidry, when Jhoan Duran was acquired from the Twins on July 30th.

2025 Chachi #26 Matt Strahm

Bats:  Right  Throws:  Left  Height:  6'3"  Weight:  193
Opening Day 2025 Age:  33
Born:  November 12, 1991, West Fargo, ND
Acquired:  Signed as a free agent with the Phillies, December 9, 2022
Departed:  Traded to the Kansas City Royals for Jonathan Bowlan, December 19, 2025
Major League Teams:  Kansas City Royals 2016-17; San Diego Padres 2018-21; Boston Red Sox 2022; Philadelphia Phillies 2023-25
Postseason Appearances:  San Diego Padres 2020; Philadelphia Phillies 2023-25

2025 Topps Holiday #H71
As I wrote in a post following Matt Strahm's trade to the Royals, in what was deemed to be maneuvering for payroll space, or a way to move a pitcher who had criticized the Phillies' coaching following the NLDS exit, the former All-Star reliever was traded for reliever Jonathan Bowlan.  When Strahm was good for the Phillies, he was really good, but I have too many memories of him blowing leads in critical games, including last year's NLDS Game 1.  In three seasons with the Phillies, he was 17-10 with a 2.71 ERA in 188 games and 212 2/3 innings pitched.  He appeared in 66 games with the club in 2025, matching his 2024 total, and was 2-3 with a 2.74 ERA in 62 1/3 innings pitched, with six saves.

Bats:  Right  Throws:  Right  Height:  6'1"  Weight:  235
Opening Day 2025 Age:  30
Born:  October 21, 1994, Guacara, Venezuela
Acquired:  Signed as a free agent with the Phillies, November 28, 2023

Major League Teams:  San Diego Padres 2017; Chicago White Sox 2018-23; Arizona Diamondbacks 2023; Philadelphia Phillies 2024-25; Atlanta Braves 2025
Postseason Appearances:  Chicago White Sox 2021; Philadelphia Phillies 2024

2025 Philadelphia Phillies Photocards
The Phillies broke camp in March with eight relievers on their roster.  Jose Ruiz, along with Jose Alvarado, Carlos Hernandez, Jordan Romano and Joe Ross, was one of five of those relievers to be ineffective, suspended and/or no longer with the organization by the end of the season.  Ruiz pitched in 16 games for the Phillies, with a record of 1-0 and an 8.16 ERA in 14 1/3 innings pitched.  He was designated for assignment on June 1st and subsequently claimed off waivers by the Braves.  After two outings with the Braves, Ruiz was dealt to the Rangers on July 18th.  He'd not appear in any games with the Rangers and as of this writing, in late December, he's a free agent.

As we prepare to be buried in several feet of snow, it was a pleasant surprise to see a press release from the Phillies on Friday afternoon with the names of 27 non-roster invitees.  There were 26 players announced a year ago, a week earlier than this year, on January 14th.

Here's a look at the 27 non-roster invitees, their 2025 organizations and an example of a recently released mainstream baseball card.  Phillies' management has already announced their intention to give Justin Crawford every opportunity to win the starting center fielder's job.

Joe Ross' tenure with the Phillies was not as disastrous as Jordan Romano's, but the reliever was given his release on August 26th, ending a disappointing season.  Ross was 2-1 with a 5.12 ERA in 37 games and 51 innings pitched with the Phillies.  Ross had been prone to one bad big inning in many of his outings, allowing multiple runs in eight of his relief appearances.  He was signed by the Cubs on September 1st, pitching in five games for the their Triple-A team in Iowa.  As of this writing in late December, Ross is still a free agent.

The Phillies Room: January Notes

1984 Donruss #248
2025 Topps Update #US47
2025 Topps Holiday #H33
2024 Topps Now Road to Opening Day
Bonus #ODB30

Stay on target . . . getting closer . . .

January 5 - Donny Baseball Joins Phils:  It's fascinating to me when an iconic player known for his time with another organization is suddenly wearing the Phillies' red pinstripes.  After weeks of rumors, the Phillies made it official and named Don Mattingly their next bench coach.  Mike Calitri, who had been the bench coach for Rob Thomson since June 2022, has been moved into a new position as Major League field coordinator.

Mattingly had previously been the bench coach for the Blue Jays (2023-25).  He says he has no plans to manage again, and if that's the case, he'll retire with a 885-941 lifetime managerial record while leading the Yankees on an interim basis (2007), Dodgers (2010-15) and Marlins (2016-22).  Along with his recent stint with the Blue Jays, Mattingly coached with the Yankees (2004-07) and Dodgers (2008-10).  His son, Preston Mattingly, is the Phillies' current GM.

Mattingly spent 14 seasons with the Yankees (1982-95), winning a batting title in 1984 and MVP honors in 1985.  He was a nine-time Gold Glove winner, a three-time Silver Slugger winner and a six-time All-Star during a playing career that never saw the Yankees reach the postseason.

January 13 - Trade with Bucs Nets Shugart:  The Phillies acquired Chase Shugart (rhp), whose name will likely auto-correct to Sugar all season, from the Pittsburgh Pirates for minor league prospect Francisco Loreto (inf).  In 35 games last season, Shugart was 4-3 with a 3.40 ERA in 45 innings pitched.  Loreto, just 18 years old, played in 47 games for the FCL Phillies last summer, batting .237 with 10 doubles.

January 16 - Bichette to Mets / J.T. Returns:  Neither signing had been officially announced on this day, but it was widely reported that Bo Bichette was poised to sign a three-year deal with the rival Mets, while J.T. Realmuto (c) would return to the Phillies on a three-year contract.  The Bichette signing was a shock, as the Phillies had seemed destined to sign the infielder, and in fact had offered him a seven-year deal worth $200 million.  The Mets swooped in after losing the Kyle Tucker sweepstakes and offered Bichette three years at $126 million.  A few hours later, it was announced Realmuto was returning to the club on a three-year, $45 million deal.

January 20 - J.T. Officially Returns / Wilson Departs:  The Realmuto signing was made official and surprisingly, Weston Wilson (inf) was designated for assignment to open up a 40-man roster spot.  Two days later, Wilson was claimed off waivers by the Orioles.  In parts of three seasons with the Phillies, Wilson batted .242 in 100 games, with nine home runs and 29 RBIs.  He memorably hit a home run in his first at-bat on the same night Michael Lorenzen threw a no-hitter, back on August 9, 2023.  And on August 15, 2024, Wilson hit for the 10th cycle in Phillies history.
