Game 108 - Phils, Turner Can't Close Out Win Against Fish

2023 Philadelphia Phillies Photo Cards
Marlins 9
, Phillies 8 (12 Innings)
Game 108 - Wednesday Night, August 2nd in Miami
Record - 58-50, 2nd Place, 12 games behind the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  Three relievers and Trea Turner couldn't get the job done in this painful extra-inning loss to the Marlins.

What It Means:  The Phillies should have swept this four-game series, but instead got sloppy towards the end of this game and blew it three different times.

What Happened:  The Phillies were up 5-0 in the top of the sixth, highlighted by a two-run double from Alec Bohm.  Zack Wheeler battled through six innings before departing with a 5-2 lead.  Matt Strahm allowed two more runs, leaving the Phillies with a slim 5-4 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth.  Gregory Soto gave up a solo home run to Jorge Soler, blowing the save, and sending the game to the 10th.

Brandon Marsh hit a two-run home run in the 10th off David Robertson, handing the game over to Craig Kimbrel to attempt the save.  Kimbrel allowed two runs to score, tying the game again.  In the 11th, Bohm connected for an RBI single to give the Phillies the lead again.  Bullpen depleted, Dylan Covey was tasked with trying to save the game for the third time.  With two outs, Josh Bell hit a sharp ground ball to shortstop Trea Turner that Turner completely missed.  The Marlins tied the game again and would walk it off in the 12th when Jesus Sanchez singled home the winning run off Covey.

Featured Card:  Turner, the Phillies' huge $300 million free agent signing this past off season, has been awful this season, and he admitted following the game this loss was due to his inability to hit or field effectively.  At the plate, he was 0 for 5 to drop his season average to .237.  He has 13 errors at shortstop, and the ball hit by Bell should have been his 14th.  He's clearly lost.  This is his 2023 team-issued photo card, only available individually this year and not in set form as had been the case for the past few decades.  I hope the Phillies reverse the decision not to release these photo cards in set form in 2024, but not as much as I hope Turner can find his groove and reverse his dreadful 2023 season.

Transactions:  Michael Lorenzen (rhp) and Rodolfo Castro (inf) were both activated.  Josh Harrison (inf) was released and Andrew Vasquez (lhp) was designated for assignment.  In 40 games with the Phillies this season, Harrison batted .204 with a pair of home runs.
