Game 88 - Shorthanded Phillies Struggle in Loss

Game 88 - Tuesday Night, July 12th in Toronto
Record - 46-42, 3rd Place, 8 games behind the Mets

One Sentence Summary:  Down several unvaccinated players, the Phillies struggled to produce and lost this ballgame to the Blue Jays, 4-3.

What It Means:  In what would have been Bailey Falter's spot in the rotation, the bullpen performed admirably but a make-shift line-up couldn't solve Blue Jays starter Jose Berrios and three relievers.

On a cooler note, manager Rob Thomson became the first major league manager born in Canada to manage a game in Canada.

What Happened:  Andrew Bellatti served as the opener for the Phillies, allowing a pair of runs on two hits in the first inning.  Mark Appel was fantastic, giving up just a run in three innings of work.  Jeurys Familia surrendered the eventual winning run in the sixth inning, and Corey Knebel worked out of a bases loaded jam to limit the damage.  Berrios struck out 13 Phillies batters in his six innings, allowing three runs on six hits.

Featured Card:  Bryson Stott has been steadily improving offensively and he hit his fifth home run of the season in the fourth inning.  Stott had two of the team's seven hits.

Transactions:  Due to Canada's Covid protocols, the Phillies placed J.T. Realmuto (c), Alec Bohm (3b), Aaron Nola (rhp) and Kyle Gibson (rhp) on the restricted list and those four players will miss this two-game series.  Rafael Marchan (c) and Nick Duron (rhp) were recalled from Lehigh Valley, and the Phillies will be able to add another minor leaguer for Wednesday night's game.
