K-Rod Joins Phils on Minor League Deal

2017 Topps Gypsy Queen #185
On Sunday, the Phillies officially announced the signing of Francisco Rodriguez (also known as K-Rod) to a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training.  Rodriguez has 437 career saves and a 2.86 ERA in 948 games over a 16-year career with the Angels, Mets, Brewers, Orioles and Tigers. He's a six-time All-Star and he helped lead the Angels to a World Series title in 2002.

Rodriguez struggled last season with the Tigers, posting a 7.82 ERA over 28 games and recording just seven saves.  Released in June by the Tigers, he signed with the Nationals' organization but was let go after just five appearances in the minors.

He's expected to compete for one of the few bullpen openings in the Phillies expected eight-man bullpen.  Locks for jobs include Hector Neris, Pat Neshek, Tommy Hunter, Adam Morgan, Luis Garcia and Mark Leiter, Jr., leaving potentially two open spots.

With pitchers and catchers reporting to Clearwater in a little over two weeks, the Phillies now have a camp head count of 59 players.

Congrats to Hall of Famer Jim Thome! #ThomeHOF

2011 Phillies Team Issue
Series 2 Special Edition #25
For the past several years, I've taken a look back at the Phillies-related baseball cards for each new inductee into the Baseball Hall of Fame.  This year is a little easier than most with all-time great and Phillies Room Favorite Jim Thome joining the hallowed hall in his first year of eligibility.  I'm lucky to have 267 different Thome cards in my collection, including this autographed photo card issued by the Phillies when they brought Thome back for a second stint prior to the 2012 season.

Like most (if not all Phillies fans), I'm a huge Thome fan and our whole family was there in August 2016 when the Phillies inducted him onto their Wall of Fame.  I know he'll most likely enter the Hall with an Indians logo on his hat, but I'd still expect a large contingent of Phillies fans to make their way to Cooperstown in August.

Joining Thome in the Hall are fellow greats Vladimir Guerrero, Trevor Hoffman and Chipper Jones.  Jack Morris and Alan Trammell had been previously announced as inductees in December from the Modern Baseball Era Committee.  Here's a look at some of the baseball cards of these new Hall of Famers in my Phillies collection.

Baseball Cards from @Section_36 Make January Better

2008 Bowman #62
2008 Topps #238
2008 Topps Opening Day #124
2008 Upper Deck #606
I've never been a big fan of January.  There's the natural post-Christmas let-down, the frigid temperatures, the busyness of my work schedule and the complete and total lack of baseball.  It's dark when I leave the house in the morning and it's dark when I get home.  My attitude towards January is usually, "Let's get this over with," and I'm not entirely proud of that.

Last week, I walked in the door from a long day at work and a crappy commute home and found a small package on our kitchen counter with a familiar return address.  The fine folks from Section 36 had once again cleaned out baseball cards that had reached their 10-year expiration date, and the Phillies cards from this purge came to me.

As has been the case the last few years, I honestly already have most of these cards, but there are always a bunch of gems in the bunch and my sons now reap the bulk of the spoils.  But most importantly, it was such a welcome (and relaxing) exercise to open a package of baseball cards and thumb through each of the three stacks within.  Along with the Phillies cards from 2008, there was a cool selection of older and some more recent Phillies cards.  There were a number of cards from a variety of years for Jimmy Rollins, Cliff Lee, Ryan Howard and the Phillies all-time saves leader, the Closer Who Must Not Be Named.  Section 36 also added to my Adrian Cardenas super collection with another autographed card of the former Phillies prospect.  (I received my first two in a surprise mid-season package this past June.)

1998 Bowman #181
2007 TriStar Elegance
Signature Marks #SM-AC
2009 Upper Deck Spectrum #75
2013 Bowman #81
I had to count the years linked below, and I'm a little shocked that this exercise has now been happening for nine years.  That means I've been maintaining (and enjoying) this blog for the past nine years and Section 36 has joined me on the journey.  Time really does fly.

Thanks to Section 36 for the baseball cards and I'm excited for 2018 World Series between the Phils and Sox!

Kingery, 7 Other Prospects Invited to Spring Training

2017 Grandstand Reading
Fightin Phils #17
On Wednesday, the Phillies added eight prospects to their list of non-roster invitees to spring training.  These eight join the previously announced 10 players from early January.  Scott Kingery is perhaps the most interesting name on the list, as the infielder could be the team's second baseman of the future.  Kingery and outfielder Andrew Pullin are appearing as non-roster invitees for the second year in a row.  Rather than go through the career accolades of these players, I wanted to take a look at their available baseball cards.

Edgar Cabral (c) - It appears as if Cabral's only baseball card appearance to date is in the 2017 Lakewood BlueClaws team set.

Enyel De Los Santos (rhp) - Acquired in December from the Padres for Freddy Galvis, he has a card in the 2016 Topps Heritage Minors set.

Tom Eshelman (rhp) - Acquired in December 2015 from the Astros as part of the Ken Giles deal, Eshelman's first major baseball card can be found within the 2015 Bowman Draft set.  He appeared on a bunch of 2016 Phillies minor league cards but had only one 2017 card, within the Topps Pro Debut Promo Night Uniforms insert set.

J.D. Hammer (rhp) - Other than appearances in Rockies minor league sets, Hammer hasn't had any mainstream baseball cards to date.  He was acquired in July as part of the return for Pat Neshek.

Cole Irvin (lhp) - Irvin can be found within the 2016 Bowman Draft set and in various Phillies minor league team sets from the past two years.

Scott Kingery (inf) - Kingery first appeared in the 2015 Bowman Draft set and his cards are readily available in Bowman and Topps minor league issues from the past two years.

Brandon Leibrandt (lhp) - Leibrandt's few cards can be found within the 2015 Clearwater Threshers team set and all three 2017 Reading Fightin Phils team sets.

Andrew Pullin (of) - Pullin is the veteran of this bunch, having appeared on Phillies baseball cards since 2012 when he received a Bowman Draft card.  He's been appearing in Phillies minor league team sets every year since then.

Pitchers and Catchers Report to Clearwater in One Month (cc: @TheSnortingBull)

We're exactly one month away from the official start of spring training, and I thought I'd check in with the Phillies offseason moves so far.  Before we get to that, and thanks to the suggestion of fellow collector and blogger Snorting Bull, here's a Steve Geltz/Steve Jeltz combo card that had to happen.  Geltz is a Phillies non-roster invitee and a Durham Bulls alumni.

Back on December 18th, I completely missed the news that Hyun Soo Kim had signed a four-year $10.58 million contract with the LG Twins of the Korea Baseball Organization.  Kim came to the Phillies in late July in the Jeremy Hellickson deal with the Orioles.  Unless he appears in some early season Topps releases with the Phillies, his one and only Phillies baseball card can be found within the limited, late season, team-issued photo card update set.

Trio of Kevins Joins Broadcast Booth

1994 Fleer #601

2001 Topps #172

2012 Choice International
League All-Stars #19
During the Phillies Broadcaster Golden Age between 1977 and 1997, the core broadcasting team consisted of Harry Kalas, Richie Ashburn, Andy Musser and Chris Wheeler.  There were some supporting players that came and went during that time, but the core four were the primary voices of the Phillies.  I miss listening to Harry and Whitey call a game, and no one will ever replace them (in my opinion).

In recent years, I've thoroughly enjoyed the radio broadcast tandem of Scott Franzke and Larry Andersen and those two have worked together since 2006.  My wife Jenna fully supports the nightly ritual of me muting the TV and turning up the radio so that we can listen to Franzke and L.A. call the game.  With Andersen announcing he'll no longer travel for road games in 2018, a replacement was needed to give Franzke a new partner.  The Phillies will fill Andersen's void with three former players - Kevin Frandsen, Kevin Jordan and Kevin Stocker - and I can't help but feel the broadcast booth is getting way too crowded at this point.

If you're keeping score at home, here's the Phillies broadcasters' line-up for the 2018 season that now includes 11 (!) voices.

Television
Play-by-play - Tom McCarthy
Color commentary - Ben Davis and John Kruk (although not always together)
Color commentary, home weekends - Mike Schmidt
Roving reporter/occasional fill-in for play-by-play - Gregg Murphy

Radio
Play-by-play - Scott Franzke
Play-by-play, middle innings - Jim Jackson
Color commentary, home games - Larry Andersen
Color commentary, road games - Kevin Frandsen, Kevin Jordan and Kevin Stocker

1887-1909 Phillies Want List

1909-11 T206 Doolin (portrait)
Yes, this want list is absurd.

But having recently gone through the exercise of putting together want lists for the 1910s, 1920s and 1930s, I thought I'd finish off the universe of Phillies baseball cards by starting at the beginning.  I don't expect to visit or update this post all that often, but here we go.  If nothing else, this may be a good source for reprint cards needed.  I would think this list is incomplete and I'll add to it as needed.

1910-1919 Phillies Want List

2005 Topps Turkey Red #14
In February 2012, I started drafting a post to serve as a want list of Phillies baseball cards issued before 1930.  I wrote then, "About a half hour into this exercise, I concluded that what I was doing was ridiculous."  At the time, I owned one Phillies baseball card from before the 1930s - the 1911 T205 Gold Border Chas S. Dooin card.  As of this writing, I've added three more cards from the 1911 T205 set.

Over the past six years, I've found myself at baseball card shows, looking at displays of old Phillies baseball cards that are (relatively) reasonably priced and thinking, "I might actually own that card one day."  If all goes according to plan, I'd like to cross one of these cards off my want list each year.  This list is most likely not complete, and I'll revise/add as I become aware of additional cards.
