1970 Topps #59
1970 Topps Appreciation:  Dick Ellsworth goes solo for this edition of 1970 Topps Appreciation. Ellsworth pitched just one season for the Phillies, traded to the club in December 1966 from the Cubs for Ray Culp.  He started 21 games for the 1967 Phillies and relieved in another 11 games.  He finished the season with a 6-7 record and a 4.38 ERA, and he was traded after the season to the Red Sox in the deal that brought Mike Ryan to Philadelphia.

1970 was to be Ellsworth's penultimate season in the Majors, splitting time between the Indians and Brewers.  In 43 games that season, all but one in relief, he had a 3-3 record and a 3.79 ERA.

  1. If/when the Phillies pick up a player from another team this season, you should make a "variation" that has the hat logo clumsily airbrushed out, as with Dick Ellsworth.

  2. Just don't follow the lead of the 1966 Ellsworth card.

  3. I really like the smudge variation idea, and I guess I could also use a photo that's 3 or 4 years old. I believe that's the top of a Cubs logo peaking up at the bottom and Ellsworth had last pitched with the Cubs in 1966.

And yikes on the 1966 Ellsworth card . . . I won't be using that concept!
