I've also neglected to finish off my Missing Links series of posts that have taken a year by year look at those Phillies players who have never appeared on a Phillies baseball card (to my knowledge). I've worked my way from 1980 up to 2000 and then the series stalled out.
In the back of my mind, I always wanted to put together a set of baseball cards to celebrate those players who suited up for the Phillies but didn't have a Phillies baseball card to their names. This has always bothered me since in a perfect world, baseball cards exist for every player for each year they're active showing them with each team they've played for. The Quarry Unlimited idea would have made me extremely happy as a younger collector, and it continues to thrill me today.

By necessity, I'm going to be fairly liberal with the photos I use. I've never seen photos of Jim Kern or Renie Martin or Steve Comer in Phillies uniforms and I doubt I ever will. I'd love to have the talent (or the time) to transform Jim Kern from a hairy Rangers pitcher to a less hairy Phillies pitcher, but that's just beyond me at this point. So I could be using a picture of Kern from his time with the Reds, or there could be black and white photos in this series. It won't be pretty, but for the time being the few of us who have always wanted a Salome Barojas Phillies baseball card will finally have one . . . or something close.
1985 Phillies - None
1987 Phillies - None
1989 Phillies - Gordon Dillard and Steve Stanicek
I look forward to the resumption of the Missing Links posts!
ReplyDeleteA bunch of the guys you listed have Reading Phillies cards, so you could use those images to get close since in many cases the only difference was the R versus the P on the cap. Let me know if you would like scans of any of them. Off the top of my head, I would say that I probably have R-Phils cards of Isales, McCormack, Reed, Sanchez, LaValliere, and Gorman. The other source would be Phillies yearbooks, where they often had a section on prominent minor-leaguers, with photos. I could send scans of those if they exist. Veterans like Barojas and Kern of course won't likely be in either of those sources.
Better to see Spanky pictured as a Reading Phillie than a Pirate....
Thanks Steve. I'm looking forward to putting this together.
ReplyDeleteAs of right now, I think the only players on the list for which I have no Phillies pictures are:
Comer, Martin, Kern, Gorman, Barojas, Pardo and Scherrer
I've found other pictures either in old Yearbooks or by doing web searches over the years. eBay has been a good source as well.
Jim, I love your blog and look forward to it everyday. I am trying to get a photo of every player to play for the Phillies in a Phillies uniform and some there are none around so I try to make my own. I just made a Renie Martin from a Donruss card and Marty Bystrom photo. I'd love to share it with you but don't know how to add the photo to this comment. I could email it to you. My email address is flahertymm@comcast.net Thanks and keep up the great work, Mike Flaherty
ReplyDeleteThanks Mike!
ReplyDeleteI appreciate the photos you sent, and I'm now down to needing the following - Comer, Kern, Gorman, Barojas and Scherrer.
