Game 71 - Monday Night, June 17th in Philadelphia
Record - 34-37, 3rd Place, 8 1/2 games behind the Braves
One Sentence Summary: The Phillies won, 5-4, as Domonic Brown delivered a winning single in the ninth, bailing out Jonathan Papelbon who had blow his first save of the season.
What It Means: This was a nice win and a relatively well-played game from the Phils. They'll try to get closer to .500 (again) tonight.
What Went Right: John Lannan returned from the disabled list and provided five strong innings of starting pitching, allowing only two runs on six hits. Reliever Michael Stutes then pitched in with two perfect innings of relief.
Ryan Howard went 3-for-3 with a solo home run in the second inning. Delmon Young contributed a two-run double in the third that just eluded the grasp of Nationals right fielder Jayson Werth.
The Phils had a 4-3 lead heading to the ninth, but Papelbon allowed a solo home run to Chad Tracy, tying up the ballgame. Fortunately for Papelbon, and the Phillies, Brown's single scored Ben Revere with the winning run for the team's fourth walk-off win of the year.
Featured Card: I'm continuing to look at Brown's baseball card evolution with the card featured here. By 2011, Brown was a mainstay in all of Topps' major releases, with base cards and insert cards appearing throughout the Bowman, Allen & Ginter's, Finest, Gypsy Queen and Heritage sets, among others. This is one of the my favorite Brown insert cards from 2011, which borrows the design of the Topps Rookies sets from the late 1980s.
He's been slumping of late, but I'm hoping Brown gets hot again, allowing me to feature a few more of his 2011 cards. Unfortunately, after a disappointing 2011 campaign (.245 average in 56 games), Brown's 2012 baseball card output was drastically reduced.
