1973 Topps #97 |
The trade had several ripple effects for the club. Tommy Hutton briefly became the team's new first baseman, taking over for the departed Montanez. A few days later, the Phillies acquired Dick Allen from the Braves and he assumed the first base role for the remainder of the '75 season. (As an aside, please see this excellent post from Dick Allen Hall of Fame documenting Allen's very brief tenure as a member of the Atlanta Braves.) Maddox took over in center, moving Mike Anderson to right and eventually to the bench as Jay Johnstone became the team's regular right fielder in late May.

The well-travelled Montanez spent a little over a year with the Giants, as he was traded to the Braves in June 1976. He hit .306 in 195 games with the Giants, but perhaps his biggest contribution to the franchise was being part of the deal that brought slugger Darrell Evans from Atlanta to San Francisco.
Montanez was my favorite Phillie at the time of the trade. As a nine-year old, it was the first time my favorite player was traded away. Starting with the two featured cards, I taped up their Topps cards every year. Montanez was with a new team each season and Maddow was reliably a Phillie. What a great trade it was for the Phils. I'm not so sentimental about my favorite players nowadays. Although, I'm dreading the day that Utley leaves the team.
ReplyDeleteGO PHILLIES!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI cannot write that large enough.
Go Phils!
ReplyDeleteArsen - I felt the same way when Bob Dernier was traded away. The thought of Utley leaving makes my head hurt.
