Game 5 - Harper Homers Three Times in Win Over Reds

2024 Topps 1989 Topps Baseball
35th Anniversary #89B-23
Phillies 9
, Reds 4
Game 1 - Tuesday Night, April 2nd in Philadelphia
Record - 2-3, 2nd Place, 1 game behind the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  Bryce Harper's three home run barrage supported a stellar pitching effort from Spencer Turnbull and Ricardo Pinto as the Phillies defeated the Reds, 9-4.

What It Means:  April showers have stalled over our area and it's not stopped raining for days.  The Phillies and Reds played through a steady mist in this game and they'll attempt to get the series finale in on Wednesday afternoon or night.

What Happened:  Turnbull made his Phillies debut on a soggy night, impressing over five innings and allowing just one unearned run while striking out seven.  Pinto entered in the sixth and secured a four-inning save, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and striking out four.

Harper was the offensive star.  His first hit of the year was his first inning solo home run.  His second hit of the year was his fourth inning solo home run, and it was also his 1,000th career run scored.  And he capped his night with a seventh inning grand slam.  Brandon Marsh also had three hits, including an eighth inning solo home run.

Featured Card:  Of course Harper gets the card, an insert from the recently released Topps Series One, but on any other night the featured card would have gone to Turnbull or even Pinto.  Harper's big night resulted in the first Topps Now Phillies card of the season.

Transaction:  Beleaguered reliever Connor Brogdon (rhp) was designated for assignment and Pinto (rhp) had his contract selected by the Phillies.  Pinto's appearance was his first in the majors since September 1, 2019, and his first game with the Phillies since September 21, 2017.
