Game 103 - Braves Destroy Phils 'Pen

2022 Topps #59
Braves 13
, Phillies 1
Game 103 - Tuesday Night, August 2nd in Atlanta
Record - 55-48, 3rd Place, 10 games behind the Mets

One Sentence Summary:  The bullpen game didn't go well at all as the Braves demolished the Phillies, 13-1.

What It Means:  Kyle Gibson is missing time while on the bereavement list, which meant Nick Nelson started this game with the bullpen taking over after two innings.

What Happened:  Nelson allowed two runs, Andrew Bellatti gave up a run, Corey Knebel was smoked for five runs, Mark Appel gave up another run and Francisco Morales allowed four more runs to top things off.  Braves starting pitcher Spencer Strider again mystified the Phillies line-up, and the offense was held to just four hits on the night.  Darick Hall doubled home Nick Castellanos for the Phillies' only run.

Featured Card:  The biggest trade of the day was Juan Soto departing the Nationals for the Padres in a massive eight-player trade.  Still just 23, Soto joins the already strong Padres' line-up in a bid to overtake the equally strong Dodgers.  It was a whirlwind day of trades, including three by the Phillies, and I actually feel a little bad for Nationals fans at this point as they watched yet another player depart the team for greener pastures.  Soto makes an appearance in my 2022 Phillies binder on this League Leaders card shared with Bryce Harper.

Transactions:  The Phillies pulled off three big trades on deadline day, summarized in this earlier post.  From an active roster perspective, Odubel Herrera (of) and Jeurys Familia (rhp) were designated for assignment and Morales (rhp) was recalled from Double-A Reading.  The Phillies only had 25 active players for this game.

Additionally, before the trades went down, Andrew Vasquez (lhp) was claimed off waivers from the Blue Jays and Zach Eflin (rhp) was moved to the 60-day injured list to make room for Vazquez on the 40-man roster.  Vasquez will join the Triple-A IronPigs.
