Game 102 - Phils Stay Hot, Complete 4-Game Sweep of Bucs

2022 Topps Now
Road to Opening Day #OD-277
Phillies 8
, Pirates 2
Game 102 - Sunday Afternoon, July 31st in Pittsburgh
Record - 55-47, 3rd Place, 9 1/2 games behind the Mets

One Sentence Summary:  The offense pounded out 18 hits in support of Aaron Nola's fine pitching performance, defeating the Pirates, 8-2, and completing the rare road four-game sweep.

What It Means:  The Phillies are eight games over .500 for the first time since June 2019, and this was their first four-game sweep in Pittsburgh since July 1968!  The winning pitchers in those games were Larry Jackson, Chris Short (twice) and Jeff James.

What Happened:  Except for Didi Gregorius, who went 0 for 5, everybody hit!  Alec Bohm and Nick Castellanos each had four hits, with Bohm falling a triple short of the cycle and finishing July having hit .434 during the month.  Bohm (7) and Kyle Schwarber (33) both homered for the Phillies.

Aaron Nola went six innings, allowing a run on six hits (and no home runs) while striking out eight.  Mark Appel pitched two scoreless innings and Jeurys Familia worked out of trouble in the ninth to end the ballgame and complete the sweep.

Featured Card:  Bohm could have player of the month honors heading his way.  He began the month with a .263 average and finished the month with his average at .299 after collecting 33 hits, including four doubles, a triple and three home runs.  Here's his Topps Now Road to Opening Day card, which comes from one of only 469 Phillies team sets issued.

Transaction:  Johan Camargo (inf) was optioned to Lehigh Valley, and Edmundo Sosa (ss) acquired from the Cardinals on Saturday, was activated.
