Spring Training Game 19 - Opening Day Roster Set

2020 Bowman Draft #BD-140
Phillies 5
, Pirates 1
Spring Training Game 19 - Tuesday Afternoon, April 5th in Clearwater
Record - 9-7-3

One Sentence Summary:  Zach Eflin pitched well in his final spring tune-up while Kyle Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto each drove in a pair of runs in this 5-1 win over the Pirates.

What It Means:  The Phillies wrapped up their shortened Clearwater schedule and they'll play one more exhibition game against the Rays on Wednesday at Tropicana Field.

What Happened:  Eflin pitched 3 2/3 innings, allowing a run on four hits while striking out seven.  Nick Nelson finished his spring with a scoreless inning, a 1.13 ERA and 11 strikeouts in eight innings pitched.  Nick Castellanos started the scoring with an RBI-double in the first, and Realmuto added a two-run double in the second.  Schwarber hit a two-run home run in the seventh off former Phillies pitcher Jerad Eickhoff.

Featured Card:  On Tuesday afternoon, it was announced young infielders Bryson Stott and Alec Bohm had both made the opening day roster.  It's somewhat surprising given the sudden infield depth on the club, but the Phillies feel they can find sufficient playing time for both.  Stott had another hit in this game to raise his spring average to .419 while Bohm's 0 for 3 dropped him down to .206 for the spring.  A spot on the 40-man roster will need to be cleared for Stott, and I'm excited to watch the organization's top prospect make his big league debut on Friday.

Camp Head Count:  35 -3 = 32

Following this game, Nick Maton (inf) was optioned to Lehigh Valley while Andrew Bellati (rhp) and Michael Kelly (rhp) were reassigned to minor league camp.  Based on the fact Stott and Bohm will both make the opening day roster, and the news a few days prior that Mickey Moniak had made the team as well, along with known injuries in camp, here is presumably the team's opening day 28-man roster:

Catchers (2) - J.T. Realmuto, Garrett Stubbs
Infielders (6) - Alec Bohm, Johan Camargo, Didi Gregorius, Rhys Hoskins, Jean Segura, Bryson Stott
Outfielders (5) - Nick Castellanos, Bryce Harper, Mickey Moniak, Kyle Schwarber, Matt Vierling
Starting Pitchers (5) - Zach Eflin, Kyle Gibson, Aaron Nola, Ranger Suarez, Zack Wheeler
Relief Pitchers (10) - Jose Alvarado, Connor Brogdon, Seranthony Dominguez, Bailey Falter, Jeurys Familia, Brad Hand, Damon Jones, Corey Knebel, Nick Nelson, Cristopher Sanchez

Injured List (6) - Sam Coonrod (rhp), Kent Emanuel (lhp), Odubel Herrera (of), James Norwood (rhp), JoJo Romero (lhp), Ryan Sherriff (lhp)
