Game 55 - Nola Reaches 1,000 Strikeout Mark; Phils Blast 7 Homers

2021 Chachi #48

Phillies 17
, Reds 3
Game 55 - Tuesday Night, June 1st in Cincinnati
Record - 26-29, 3rd Place, 4 games behind the Mets

One Sentence Summary:  Aaron Nola recorded his 1,000th career strikeout and the offense exploded with seven home runs and 17 runs overall in this much-needed blow-out victory over the Reds.

What It Means:  This game would conclude the Reds series for now as Wednesday afternoon's game was rained out and rescheduled for June 28th.

What Happened:  Once again, Nola didn't have his best stuff, but he lasted five innings, allowing three runs on eight hits.  Facing his final batter of the day, Nola struck out Jesse Winker to end the fifth, securing his 1,000th career strikeout.

The Phillies offense went bananas.  The seven home runs from Ronald Torreyes, Odubel Herrera (2), Andrew McCutchen (2), Rhys Hoskins and Matt Joyce tied a franchise record set on both September 8, 1998 and July 26, 2018.  Joyce's was a grand slam hit in the ninth inning off infielder Alex Blandino.  Alec Bohm also busted out of his lengthy slump with three hits.

Featured Card:  Nola joined a fairly elite club of Phillies pitchers with his milestone strikeout, and he reached the plateau quicker than any of these other pitchers by 133 innings.  The eight other Phillies pitchers in the 1,000 strikeout club are Steve Carlton, Robin Roberts, Cole Hamels, Chris Short, Curt Schilling, Grover Cleveland Alexander, Jim Bunning and Curt Simmons.
