Phillies 7, Tigers 3
Game 30 - Wednesday Night, May 1st in Philadelphia
Record - 17-13, 1st place, 2 games ahead of the Braves and Mets
One Sentence Summary: A bases clearing double from Maikel Franco in the seventh inning was the difference in this game as the Phillies went on to win, 7-3.
What It Means: Another off day on Thursday is followed by a weekend series with the Nationals at home. The Mets lost their game, dropping them into a tie with the Braves, both two games behind the Phillies.
What Happened: Aaron Nola pitched better than his last few outings, going 5 2/3 innings and allowing a run on seven hits while striking out six. Franco's big hit gave the team a 4-2 lead and temporarily gave him the team lead in RBIs with 25 until Rhys Hoskins hit a solo home run (9) in the eighth to tie him. Cesar Hernandez and Andrew McCutchen added RBI singles and Phil Gosselin doubled home Hernandez in the eighth to put the game away.
Featured Card: At the end of last season, I felt fairly confident Franco wouldn't be the team's starting third baseman in 2019. Not only did he return at that position, he's been one of the Phillies' best hitters and probably the most dangerous eight-hole hitter in all of baseball.
All of Franco's gypsy queen cards seem to have him in that throwing pose.
