2017 Choice Phillies Minor League Top 30 Prospects #21 Nick Pivetta

Dodgers 5, Phillies 3
Game 23 - Sunday Afternoon, April 30th in Los Angeles
Record - 11-12, Tied for 2nd place, 5 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  A sputtering offense and Jeanmar Gomez contributed to this 5-3 Dodgers win.

What It Means:  The Dodgers completed the three-game sweep.  It won't get any easier, as the Phils open a four game series in Chicago against the Cubs on Monday night.

What Happened:  Cameron Rupp had a three-hit game, but was picked off second base to thwart a potential rally.  The Phillies went 1 for 7 with runners in scoring position.

Making his major league debut, Nick Pivetta worked out of several tough innings.  He lasted five, allowing two runs on nine hits while striking out five.  Gomez allowed a three-run home run to Andrew Toles in the sixth and his ERA is now 9.64.

Featured Card:  Pivetta gets the card and he becomes the fourth Phillies player to make his big league debut so far this season.  For the second year in a row, the Reading Fightin Phils issued a set featuring the top prospects in the Phillies' organization.  Pivetta is in the set and this is his sole 2017 baseball card to date.

Transaction:  Prior to the game Pivetta was recalled and reliever Luis Garcia was optioned to Lehigh Valley.

Phillies Debuts:  It's not clear yet if Pivetta will get another start or if Aaron Nola is healthy enough to come off the disabled list in the coming week.
  • Nick Pivetta (rhp) - After three straight hits to start his day, Pivetta struck out Adrian Gonzalez to record his first out.  He allowed a solo home run to Chris Taylor in the second.  Per a note from Matt Breen on Twitter, it's the first time the Phillies have had four debuts in April since 1970.
