Revere Shipped to Toronto for Pitching Prospects

2015 Topps #123
There has been a deal.

The Phillies were extremely active prior to the non-waiver trade deadline, shedding Jonathan Papelbon, Cole Hamels and Jake Diekman from their roster.  With about an hour to go until the 4pm deadline on Friday afternoon, the Phillies sent outfielder Ben Revere to the Toronto Blue Jays for right handed pitchers Jimmy Cordero and Alberto Tirado.

Since they share the same first name, Revere will forever be our youngest son Ben's first favorite baseball player.  Our Ben is the proud owner of a Revere autograph, which my wife Jenna secured for him and Revere was also kind enough to sign an autograph for our oldest son Doug.

2014 Topps Heritage Minors #121
In 2 1/2 seasons with the Phillies, Revere hit .303, stole 95 bases, made dozens of spectacular diving catches and took just as many circuitous, bizarre routes to track down fly balls.  I've accumulated 29 baseball cards of Revere during his time in red pinstripes and his latest (and perhaps last) Phillies card can be found in the team's second series photo card set.  (As an aside, I've got to imagine a series three photo card set is in the works, or at least a 2.1 set with traded players removed and cards added for the recent call-ups and roster additions.)

Cordero was promoted to Double-A New Hampshire this season and it appears as if his only baseball cards to date can be found within Blue Jays minor league team sets.  Tirado had been pitching in Hi-A Dunedin.  His baseball cards can be found in the 2013 Topps Pro Debut, 2014 Bowman Chrome Prospects and 2014 Topps Heritage Minors sets.

  1. Man this is a pretty bad deal for the Blue Jays and sort of a win for the Phillies who got back a real stud in Tirado.

  2. I thought of your Ben as soon as I heard about Revere going to Toronto. I'm sure he's all kinds of disappointed, but I guess there's no reason he can't have a second-favorite team in the American League.

  3. ZZ - I thought the same thing. Seems like a major haul for Revere.

TSR - He's bummed. We're probably going to end up getting him a Revere #7 Blue Jays shirt. His next favorite player is Chase Utley and rumor has it that Utley will be one of the players who clears waivers and is traded in August. Being a young Phillies fan these days is tough. (Being an old Phillies fan these days is tough too.)
