1985 Topps #360
1985 Topps #255
1985 Topps Appreciation:  Today's series preview post features two players with ties to the Phillies and Cardinals organizations who were teammates on the 1980 World Champion Phillies team.  After appearing in games with the Phillies in four seasons between 1978 and 1981, Lonnie Smith was traded to the Cardinals in November 1981 in a three-way deal with the Indians.  In today's day and age, every news show would have a cute graphic mapping out which team got which player in a three-way or four-way trade.  Back in my day, after walking barefoot to school while being chased by wolves, I would have to map out who ended up where in these types of deals.

I'm sure I could find a circa 1981 notebook somewhere noting who went where in this trade, and I would have used the appropriate colored magic marker in my notebook for each of the team names:

Phillies got - Bo Diaz (from Indians)
Indians got - Silvio Martinez and Lary Sorensen (from Cardinals) and Scott Munninghoff (from Phillies)
Cardinals got - Lonnie Smith (from Phillies)

I wrote about the much more straight-forward deal with the Cardinals that brought Steve Carlton to the Phillies in this series preview post from two years ago.
