Game 136 - Sunday Afternoon, August 31st in Flushing
Record - 62-74, 5th Place, 15 1/2 games behind the Nationals
One Sentence Summary: A.J. Burnett struggled again, and despite Domonic Brown's four-hit game, the Phillies still fell to the Mets, 6-5.
What It Means: I'm writing this game summary post after Monday afternoon's big game, so let's get through this so that I can better focus on the team's no-hitter today!
What Happened: Brown (#8) and Ryan Howard (#20) both homered in this game. Burnett lost his 15th game of the season, becoming the first Phillies pitcher to lose that many games in a season since Mark Leiter lost 17 in 1997.
Featured Card/Transaction: Last night the Phillies announced what will most likely be their final player move before this offseason. The much maligned John Mayberry, Jr. was traded to the Blue Jays for third base Double-A prospect Gustavo Pierre. In parts of six seasons (six season?!!) with the Phillies, Mayberry hit .242 with 52 home runs and 169 RBIs in exactly 500 games.
If you're looking for any Pierre baseball cards, he's been featured in the 2008 Donruss Elite Extra Edition, 2010 Topps Pro Debut and 2011 Bowman Chrome Prospects sets.

When is Gillick going to fire Amaro? No other deals matter.
ReplyDeleteThe biggest promotion could the Phils could make would be to promote a GM from Lehigh Valley, Reading, Lakewood, Clearwater or Williamsport.
ReplyDeleteYes, I know that the minor league GMs primarily focus on promotions, food stands, ad sales, etc., but could they really do any worse?
At least Franco was promoted. That was all Gillick no doubt, as earlier Amaro was saying he "couldn't decide whether or not to promote Franco".
ReplyDeleteWhat? That's a no-brainer! Amaro subscribes to the "let's not start a phenom's major-league clock too early" brand of general managing.
Once Gillick began calling the shots, sanity was restored.
I would love it if Gillick fired Amaro while serving as interim President. It's Machiavellian but it needs to be done. The Phils will be good in RF+3 years, where RF = the year that Ruben is fired.
