1999 Aurora #145 Kevin Sefcik

Nationals 8, Phillies 5
Game 116 - Saturday Night, August 10th in  Washington
Record - 52-64, 4th Place, 18 1/2 games behind the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  Once again, the bullpen faltered late in the game, leading to a 8-5 Nationals victory.

What It Means:  The Phillies have lost their 10th consecutive road game, and they've now lost 16 of their last 19 games.  They have an atrocious 4-16 record since the All-Star Break.  They'll try to salvage a win this afternoon against the Nationals before heading to Atlanta to face the red-hot Braves.  I have a bad feeling about this.

What Went Wrong:  Relievers Jake Diekman and Zach Miner did the honors in this game, giving up five runs in the fateful seventh inning.  Cliff Lee had lasted six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits.

Darin Ruf (6) and Domonic Brown (26) both homered in the losing effort.

Featured Card:  The last time the Phillies were in the midst of a ten-game road losing streak was back in late August/early September 1999 when the Phils lost 12 on the road.  Loss number ten in that streak came on September 12th against the Diamondbacks, and that game featured such Phillies notables as Rob Ducey, Billy Brewer, Scott Aldred and Torey Lovullo.

Kevin Sefcik, who in my mind perfectly personifies late '90s Phillies baseball, pinch-hit for Ducey in the seventh, lined out, and finished out the game in left field.
