1997 Ultra #247 Ron Blazier

Tigers 12, Phillies 4
Game 105 - Sunday Afternoon, July 28th in Detroit
Record - 49-56, 3rd Place, 11 games behind the Braves

Another Massive, Post-Vacation, Why Do I Even Bother Catch-Up, Part 2 of 8

One Sentence Summary:  The Tigers rode a painfully embarrassing sixth inning in which they scored eight unearned runs, to another easy victory over the imploding Phillies.

What It Means:  The Phillies dropped their eighth in a row, mercifully ending a disastrous 1-8 road trip.  When the trip began, there was hope for a possible run at a play-off spot.  When the trip ended, the Phillies and their fans were looking towards 2014.

What Went Wrong:  With the score tied 3-3 heading to the bottom of the sixth, disaster struck.  Jake Diekman, Steve Susdorf and Darin Ruf all committed errors.  Luis Garcia walked home two runs before allowing a grand slam to Jhonny Peralta.  When do pitchers and catchers report to Clearwater?

Featured Card:  This unfortunate game was the first time the Phillies had allowed eight unearned runs in a game since May 22, 1997.  Scott Rolen committed a costly error in the third inning of that game, leading to eight unearned runs off starting pitcher Curt Schilling.  Ron Blazier replaced Schilling and escaped the inning.  I thought this game had more of a Blazier feel to it than a Rolen or a Schilling feel.

  1. Keep going with the late 1990s cards. This team would have fit in well with those teams, performance-wise.

  2. Perhaps it's time to pull out a Midre Cummings or a Tony Barron card . . .
